Tools, Human Development and Mathematics

This chapter raises a number of issues from pre-history and history that one mathematics educator considers ‘worthy of mention’ with regard to tools and mathematics. These issues are: tool use in the development of the human species (phylogenesis); tool use in a mathematical culture, ancient Greek mathematics that goes beyond the obvious tools; an example from ancient Indian mathematics that bears some resemblances to Jon’s experimental mathematics described in Chap. 3; the mutual support of hand, mind and artefact in expert use of an abacus; a consideration of a period (sixteenth-century Europe) where there was a rapid advance in the development of mathematical tools.

Evaluating the microscopic effect of brushing stone tools as a cleaning procedure

Cleaning stone tool surfaces is a common procedure in lithic studies. The first step widely applied at any archeological site (and/or at field laboratories) is the gross removal of sediment from the surfaces of artifacts. Lithic surface alterations due to mechanical action applied in wet or dry cleaning regimes have never been examined at a microscopic scale. This could have important implications in traceology, as any modern surface modifications inflicted on archeological artifacts might compromise their functional interpretations. Competition between the buckling-driven delamination and wrinkling in compressed thin coatings

Abstract The competition between two common failure modes of a thin coating under in-plane compression, the surface wrinkling and the buckling-driven delamination, is studied to assess the critical strain when the mechanical instability may occur at given geometrical and material parameters. A buckling map is constructed based on results of a finite element analysis, which relates the critical applied strain for the onset of instability to the interface adhesion and elastic properties of materials. An approximate scaling relation is derived for the energy release rate of buckling-driven delamination of a coating deposited on a compliant substrate.

Pour cerner les techniques metallurgiques des artisans protohistoriques, il est necessaire de connaitre les evolutions microstructurales obtenues selon les deformations imposees. The use of waste materials and by-products in building materials is of increasing importance to improve sustainability in construction, as is the incorporation of photocatalytic materials to both combat atmospheric pollution and protect the structures and façades. This work reports the innovative use of photocatalytic hydroxyapatite (HAp) based powders, derived from Atlantic codfish bone wastes, as an additive to natural hydraulic lime mortars. HAp is the main component of bone, and hence is non-toxic and biocompatible. Methane-derived carbonate conduits from the late Aptian of Salinac (Marne Bleues, Vocontian Basin, France): Petrology and biosignatures

Abstract Peculiar carbonate bodies occur in distinct marl layers of the Marnes Bleues Formation (Aptian–Albian, Vocontian Basin, Southern France). The carbonate conduits exhibit pipe- or sausage-like forms and a central channel. Their sizes range between 30 and 60 cm in length and 5–10 cm in diameter. The conduit carbonates consist of automicrite authigenically formed within the sediment. Millimeter-sized aggregates of framboidal pyrite are abundant within the conduit automicrites, probably representing former colonies of sulfate reducing bacteria. Managing soil nitrate with cover crops and buffer strips in Sicilian vineyards

When soil nitrate levels are low, plants suffer nitrogen (N) deficiency but when the levels are excessive, soil nitrates can pollute surface and subsurface waters. Strategies to reduce the nitrate pollution are necessary to reach a sustainable use of resources such as soil, water and plant. Buffer strips and cover crops can contribute to the management of soil nitrates, but little is known of their effectiveness in semiarid vineyards plantations. The Finite Element Analysis (FEA) is a numerical method which allows to analyse the static and dynamic behaviour of complex structures. A structure is substituted by a model consisting of a number of small, well-defined elements, each interconnected by nodes. Within the element attributes and material properties, the model can be exposed to static or dynamic loads. The displacements of the structure as the reaction to its loadings are calculated. Other data such as stress or strain at localized points in the structure are derived from these displacements. Fine–grained spinel ferrites: From the reactivity to magnetic properties

The oxidation at low temperature of fine-grained ferrites containing oxidizable cations such as Cu + , Fe 2+ , Mn 2+ , Mo 3+ , V 3+ , has led to new mixed-valent cation deficient ferrites with a large number of vacancies. It has been demonstrated by DTG analysis that each cation oxidizes at a specific temperature in close relation with the cation-oxygen distance. The kinetics oxidation of each oxidizable cation has been explained on the basis of a diffusion-induced stress effect when these stresses are generated by the chemical gradient induced during the oxidation process.
