SHRIMP ZIRCON AGES AND PETROLOGY OF LOWER CRUSTAL GRANULITE XENOLITHS FROM THE LETSENG-LA-TERAE KIMBERLITE, LESOTHO: FURTHER EVIDENCE FOR A NAMAQUA-N…
2013
Recrystallized zircons extracted from intermediate granulites of the Letseng-la-Terae Diamond Mine in northeastern Lesotho provide evidence that the Tugela Terrane of the Mesoproterozoic high-grade Namaqua-Natal mobile belt may extend ~200 km farther west than previously thought. The rock-forming minerals in the investigated lower crustal granulites contain garnet, clinopyroxene, plagioclase and quartz or garnet, wollastonite, plagioclase and quartz. Calculated values for peak granulite-facies metamorphism are ~13 kbar and ~850°C. Thermal overprint and therein granulite-facies metamorphism occurred during the late Mesoproterozoic and is documented by SHRIMP metamorphic zircon ages of 1018 ±…
Protomylonite, Mylonite and Ultramylonite
2009
The objective of this chapter is to show how variation of strain intensity can be judged in thin section. Usually this kind of variation can best be observed in low-grade mylonites where the percentage of porphyroclasts decreases progressively with strain intensity. However, the percentage of matrix is highly dependent on mineralogical composition (e.g. quartz and biotite tend to convert to matrix readily). Compositional banding in gneiss can therefore result in mylonitic banding of apparent strain variation, which in fact only reflects variation in composition of the parent rock. Several examples of ultramylonite are derived from quartzitic rocks that tend to form few or no porphyroclasts …
The Lichen Genus Usnea On Quercus Suber In Iberian Cork-Oak Forests
2017
AbstractFifteen species of Usnea are recorded from Iberian cork-oak forests: U. ceratina, U. comma, U. dasaea, U. esperantiana, U. flammea, U. fulvoreagens, U. glabrata, U. hirta, U. mutabilis, U. rubicunda, U. subcornuta, U. subfloridana U. subscabrosa, U. substerilis and U. wasmuthii. A key for these species is provided. Details of morphology, chemistry, distribution, ecology and taxonomy are discussed. Usnea dasaea is reported as new to the Iberian Peninsula. New chemotypes of U. fulvoreagens (with squamatic acid) and U. wasmuthii (with psoromic acid) have been identified. Distribution maps of U. dasaeaand U. subcornuta in Europe are presented. A new combination, Usnea subfloridana subsp…
Hydroponic Lettuce Cultivation Using Organic Nutrient Solution from Aerobic Digested Aquacultural Sludge
2021
The aim of this study was to demonstrate how aquacultural sludge can be processed and utilized as an organic nutrient solution (ONS) for hydroponic lettuce production. By using a previous developed method, approximately 80% of the processed sludge was reclaimed as a clear, nutrient-rich solution. The performance of the recovered nutrient solution on lettuce growth was assessed in a nutrient film hydroponic system. The results were compared to the results obtained using a conventional nutrient solution (CNS). Yield, fresh weight, water consumption, and nutrient and heavy metal content in leaf tissue were measured. In spite of a 16% lower average fresh weight obtained in ONS compared to the w…
Stability of Flow with Viscous Dissipation in a Horizontal Porous Layer with an Open Boundary Having a Prescribed Temperature Gradient
2010
Published version of an article in the journal: Transport in Porous Media. The original publication is available at www.springerlink.com, http://dx.doi.org/10.1007/s11242-010-9588-6 A buoyancy-induced stationary flow with viscous dissipation in a horizontal porous layer is investigated. The lower boundary surface is impermeable and subject to a uniform heat flux. The upper open boundary has a prescribed, linearly varying, temperature distribution. The buoyancy-induced basic velocity profile is parallel and non-uniform. The linear stability of this basic solution is analysed numerically by solving the disturbance equations for oblique rolls arbitrarily oriented with respect to the basic velo…
Correlation between oxidation states of transition metal ions and variation of the coercivity in mixed-valence defect spinel ferrites
1997
Abstract Due to the very high dispersion of mixed-valence spinel ferrites prepared by ‘soft chemistry’ it becomes possible to oxidize in the spinel lattice, not only ferrous ions but also different transition metal ions (Cr 3+ , Mn 2+ , Mn 3+ , Mo 3+ , Mo 4+ V 2+ , V 3+ , Cu + ), by ‘soft’ oxidation between 150 and 500°C, under formation of non-stoichiometric spinels cation vacancies. The oxidation state with the coordination and the oxidation temperature of the cations have been determined in coppermanganese ferrites by derivative thermogravimetry (DTG), based on the specific solid-state reactivity of cations in the redox reaction. For Co-modified non-stoichiometric spinels, which present…
Investigation of diffusion and electromigration of hydrogen in palladium and PdAg alloy
1999
Abstract Diffusion and electromigration of hydrogen in PdH 0.1 , Pd 77 Ag 23 H 0.1 and Pd 50 Ag 50 H 0.1 alloy were measured by means of resistivity method. It is known that hydrogen migrates towards the cathode within the temperature range of 300–473 K in the PdH 0.1 and Pd 77 Ag 23 H 0.1 system. In Pd 50 Ag 50 H 0.1 , hydrogen migrates towards the cathode below 400 K, but towards the anode at higher temperatures. Its effective valency increases together with temperature. At the same time it satisfies the linear dependence on inverse specific resistance ρ : Z eff = Z i +( k / ρ ). The constants Z i and k have the following values: (1.05±0.01) and −(3.81±0.04)×10 −8 Ω m for hydrogen in PdH …
Influence of the feed per tooth variation on the surface roughness at end milling of an aluminum alloy
2019
Abstract As a part of the cutting process, a researched aspect continuously is surface quality. Based on and using the results of previous research, the present scientific paper addresses the problem of the machined surfaces roughness. The cutting process approached in this study is the end-milling one, and the workpiece material used to carry out the study is the aluminum alloy used in the aerospace industry. The adopted cutting regime imply to keep the cutting speed at a constant value while the cutting parameters: cutting depth and feed per tooth vary with different values. The experimental research carried out by the authors in a prestigious industrial company is complicated and complie…
The role of pedogenic overprinting in the obliteration of parent material in some polygenetic landscapes of Sicily (Italy)
2016
Abstract Many soils older than the Holocene have experienced several changes, and possess properties that may be due to the complex effect of several stages of soil development; these soils are called polygenetic. It is still rather unclear, however, if, as time elapses, pedogenic processes tend to diverge generating different soils, or converge towards increasingly similar soils. We studied five pedons (37°60′N, 13°90′E) exposed to present weathering simultaneously since the Holocene but located on Upper Miocene or Holocene parent material. Their XRD and FTIR clay mineralogy reveal an overall homogeneity; smectites, calcite and gypsum reach the thermodynamic equilibrium, a slight undersatu…
Una nueva personalidad para Juan Melchor Pérez, scultore e tragettatore al servicio del VII Duque de Montalto y Juan José de Aus…
2018
