Rheological properties of progesterone microemulsions: Influence of xanthan and chitosan biopolymer concentration

2008

In this preformulations study, rheological properties of microemulsions with progesterone (1%) were studied to analyze the effect of xanthan and chitosan at different concentrations (0.5–3%). Steady shear and oscillatory rheological properties were analyzed using a controlled stress rheometer. Steady shear data were satisfactorily adjusted to the Carreau model. For all preparations, shear-thinning behavior was observed. Zero shear viscosity (η0) increased with the biopolymer concentration. The results from dynamic experiments showed the behavior of all preparations with xanthan gum and those of chitosan to be characteristic of weak gels and liquid-like solutions, respectively. The correlati…

Mechanical properties of recycled polyethylene ecocomposites filled with natural organic fillers

2006

The use of natural organic fillers in addition to postconsumer recycled polymers is getting a growing interest during the last years; this is due to many advantages they can provide in terms of cost, aesthetic properties, environmental impact. In this work, several types of wood flour (differing each other with regard to production source and particle size) were added to a recycled polyethylene coming from films for greenhouses and the effects of filler type, content, and size were investigated. Investigation was then focused on the improvement of mechanical properties, through the addition of polar copolymers (ethylene-co-acrylic acid, ethylene-vinyl acetate) and a maleic anhydride-grafted…

Kenaf-filled biodegradable composites: rheological and mechanical behaviour

2012

Biodegradable polymer composites, typically based on biodegradable polymer matrices and natural-organic fillers, are gaining rising interest and importance over the last few years. Several natural-organic fillers can be used but the most widespread so far is wood, in the form of fibres or flour. Alternative cellulosic fillers can ensure advantages in terms of resource utilization and properties of the final composite. In this work, Mater-Bi® based biodegradable composites were prepared with two kinds of wood flour, and directly compared with alternative composites containing kenaf fibres. The use of kenaf fibres allowed improved elastic modulus, tensile strength and interaction with the pol…

Polymer, Metal, and Hybrid Nano- and Mesotubes by Coating Degradable Polymer Template Fibers (TUFT Process)

2000

). Selective reaction with the silver atoms at the interface of the particles occurred and the coated particles were then extracted from reverse micelles. The powder of coated nanocrystals thus obtained was then dispersed in hexane, giving an optically clear solution. The size distribution was still rather large (30 %), and to reduce it a size-selected precipitation process [20] was used. In this process two solvents, such as hexane and pyridine, are mixed. The first is a good solvent and the second a poor solvent for the alkyl chains. With this solvent mixture, the larger coated particles flocculated whereas the smaller ones remain in the solution, thus providing size selection. By repeati…

Biopolymer interactions affect the functional properties of edible films based on agar, cassava starch and arabinoxylan blends

2009

Abstract Edible films based on the binary combination of agar (AG), cassava starch (CAS) and arabinoxylan (AX) were studied with regard to their microstructure, moisture barrier and mechanical properties. Though the films appear macroscopically homogeneous, electron microscopy observations reveal a phase separation and dispersion, respectively, in AG–CAS and AG–AX blend film structures, whereas the structure of CAS–AX blend films seems homogeneous. In case high moisture (84% and 99% RH), neither the combination of AG and CAS nor the addition of AX into CAS can improve film moisture barrier properties, except at a lower RH (57%). Conversely, water vapor permeability (WVP) of AG based film is…

Colloidal stability and self-assembling behavior of nanoclays

2020

Abstract Currently, nanoclays are attracting the attention of a wide part of the scientific community, due to some of their most peculiar features that make them good candidates for applications in different fields. In light of this, some strategies can be pursued in order to obtain stable colloidal dispersions of nanoclays with the aim to improve their features and to expand their use. Hence, this chapter presents an overview on the structural and morphological characteristics, the physico-chemical properties and the main approaches that are taken into account for the preparation of homogeneous suspensions of Halloysite, Imogolite and Laponite in both aqueous and apolar solvent media. In p…

Ionic iridium complex and conjugated polymer used to solution-process a bilayer white light-emitting diode.

2013

Bilayer white light-emitting devices are prepared from solution, using an ionic orange phosphorescent organometallic complex and a neutral fluorescent conjugated polymer. Because of the very different polarity of the two components, they dissolve in orthogonal solvents, allowing for the direct deposition of the blue emitter on top of the orange emitter without the need of cross-linking or special coating methodology. Fine tuning of the layer thickness of both light-emitting layers allows for the color tuning of different types of white light.

The structure of gas-filled n-butyl-2-cyanoacrylate (BCA) polymer particles

1995

Abstract The structure of gas-filled poly-[n-butyl-2-cyanoacrylate] (BCA) particles has been demonstrated by negative staining with uranyl acetate, platinum-carbon shadowing of air-dried material and thin sectioning of the aqueous suspension of BCA particles, embedded in water-soluble melamine resin. The polymer shell of the hollow particles possesses a globular outer surface and a smoother inner surface.

Intrinsic Viscosities of Polymer Blends: Sensitive Probes of Specific Interactions between the Counterions of Polyelectrolytes and Uncharged Macromol…

2018

In joint dilute aqueous solutions of pullulan (PUL) and poly(sodium 4-styrenesulfonate) (PSS-Na) the Na+ ions of the polyelectrolyte interact so favorably with the monomeric units of PUL that isolated coils containing both types of macromolecules are formed upon dilution. When water is replaced against a 1 M solution of NaCl, this effect dies out because of the large surplus of Na+ ions. On the other hand, if the water contains increasing amounts of the respective counterpolymer instead of NaCl, the formation of mixed isolated coils is fostered, where a further diminution of the intrinsic viscosities is caused by the lower the solvent quality. The molar mass of PSS-Na plays an important rol…

Prediction of the morphology of polymer-clay nanocomposites

2015

Abstract Polymer nanocomposites have continually attracted increasing interest over the last decade, due to significant improvements they can offer compared to neat polymer matrices. However, the final morphology of a nanocomposite, determined by several variables, can significantly influence the macroscopic properties of the final product. Therefore, it is important to study the interactions between processing, morphology, structure and rheological properties, and the suitability of existing models in order to predict the system's behaviour with change of the main processing variables. In this work, the applicability of a predictive theory based on the Wu model was formulated and proposed …
