Scolecite, Part I: Refinement of high-order data, separation of internal and external vibrational amplitudes from displacement parameters

1997

A single crystal of scolecite, CaAl2Si3O10· 3H2O, was studied by X-ray diffraction methods at room temperature. The intensities were measured with MoKα radiation (λ=0.71069 A) in a complete sphere of reflection up to sinθ/λ=0.9 A−1. The structure was refined in the pseudo-orthorhombic setting of space group F1d1 instead of the conventional setting Cc for better comparison with natrolite (Fdd2). The cell parameters are: a=18.502(1) A, b=18.974(2) A, c=6.525(1) A, β=90.615(7)°, V=2290.6(3) A3, Z=8. A refinement of high-order diffraction data yielded residuals of R(F)=0.9%, R w (F)=0.9%, GoF=1.73 for 1831 high-angle reflections (0.7≤sinθ/λ≤0.9 A−1) and R(F)=1.2%, R w (F)=1.4%, GoF=3.22 for all…

Enhanced Surface Ligands Reactivity of Metal Clusters by Bulky Ligands for Controlling Optical and Chiral Properties.

2021

Surface ligands play critical roles in determining the surface properties of metal clusters. However, modulating the properties and controlling the surface structure of clusters through surface‐capping agent displacement remain a challenge. In this work, a silver cluster, [Ag 14 (SPh(CF 3 ) 2 ) 12 (PPh 3 ) 4 (DMF) 4 ] ( Ag 14 ‐DMF , where HSPh(CF 3 ) 2 is 3,5‐bis(trifluoromethyl)benzenethiol, PPh 3 is triphenylphosphine and DMF is N,N‐Dimethylformamide), with weakly coordinated DMF ligands on the surface silver sites, was synthesized by using a mixed ligands strategy (bulky thiolates, phosphines and small solvents). The as‐prepared Ag 14 ‐DMF is a racemic mixture of chiral molecules. Owing …

Electronic properties and high-pressure behavior of wolframite-type CoWO4

2021

In this work we characterize wolframite-type CoWO4 under ambient conditions and under compression up to 10 GPa, with emphasis on its electronic structure. X-Ray diffraction and vibrational experiments, supported by ab initio calculations, show that CoWO4 is stable under high-pressure conditions, as no structural changes are detected in the studied pressure range. Interesting findings come from optical absorption spectroscopy. On the one hand, CoWO4 is confirmed to have one of the lowest band gaps among similar wolframites, around 2.25 eV. This makes CoWO4 suitable for use in applications such as the photocatalysis of organic pollutants and water splitting. Additionally, a monotonic decrease…

Effect of High Pressure on the Crystal Structure and Vibrational Properties of Olivine-Type LiNiPO4

2018

In this work, we present an experimental and theoretical study of the effects of high pressure and high temperature on the structural properties of olivine-type LiNiPO4. This compound is part of an interesting class of materials primarily studied for their potential use as electrodes in lithium-ion batteries. We found that the original olivine structure (α-phase) is stable up to ∼40 GPa. Above this pressure, the onset of a new phase is observed, as put in evidence by the X-ray diffraction (XRD) experiments. The structural refinement shows that the new phase (known as β-phase) belongs to space group Cmcm. At room temperature, the two phases coexist at least up to 50 GPa. A complete conversio…

In situ analysis of garnet inclusion in diamond using single-crystal X-ray diffraction and X-ray micro-tomography

2012

A single crystal of garnet enclosed in a diamond from the Jericho kimberlite (Slave Craton, Canada) has been investigated using X-ray diffraction and X-ray micro-tomography. The novel experimental approach allowed us to determine the crystal structure of the garnet. The unit-cell edge a and fractional atomic coordinates of oxygen were used to determine the composition via an updated Margules model for garnets. The composition is Pyr(0.41(5))Alm(0.36(7))Gro(0.22(1))Uva(0.01(1)), which is indistinguishable from the eclogitic garnets found in other Jericho diamonds. We also demonstrated that residual pressures on the inclusion of up to 1 GPa do not affect significantly the determination of the…

Coupled Semiconductor Systems for Photocatalysis. Preparation and Characterization of Polycrystalline Mixed WO3/WS2 Powders

1999

Mixed WO3/WS2 powders were prepared by oxidation of WS2. The physical properties of the samples were characterized by X-ray diffraction, diffuse reflectance spectroscopy, and scanning electron microscopy; they were strongly dependent upon the time and temperature of oxidation. The chemical state and the elemental distribution of the sample surface were investigated by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The photocatalytic results have showed that the aqueous suspensions of the mixed WO3/WS2 systems have significantly higher activities than pure WS2 and WO3 for the photodegradation of phenol. The enhanced performance can be related to the presence of heterojunctions WO3/WS2 on the single parti…

Diffusional kinetics of metalliding zinc into solid copper

1982

The process of incorporation of zinc into a copper cathode has been experimentally studied in a molten salt system at 381±2° C and at various current densities. The process is shown to be kinetically controlled by the diffusion of Zn into the solid matrix. A galvanostatic pulse titration technique has been used to determine the chemical diffusion coefficient at various alloy compositions, and an exponential relationship has been found between the diffusivity and the third power of the zinc concentration in the alloy. This relationship was then used in the diffusion equation within the solid matrix and a numerical integration was performed. Very good agreement was found between the calculate…

Diffusion of small molecules in edible films: Effect of water and interactions between diffusant and biopolymer

2008

Mass transfers of various molecules in multiphasic food products lead to quality modification and thus require the use of edible films or coatings in-between the foodstuff. Consequently, it is important to assess the barrier properties and efficiencies of edible films as well as to determine the diffusivities of the migrants. Translational diffusion of a reference molecule such as fluorescein, determined by the fluorescence recovery after photobleaching (FRAP) method, displays a threshold of a critical water content inducing an increase of the molecular mobility, and demonstrates that multiple populations of a single molecular specie can be involved in different diffusion kinetics. Further …

ASSESMENT OF TEMPERATURE POLARIZATION IN MEMBRANE DISTILLATION CHANNELS BY LIQUID CRYSTAL THERMOGRAPHY

2014

AbstractThe measurement of local temperature distributions within a membrane distillation (MD) channel is a crucial step for the optimization of the channel and spacer geometry. This information allows the estimation of temperature polarization phenomena, which can dramatically influence the thermal efficiency of the process and the optimal choice of the geometric configuration (net spacer features, channel size, etc.). In the present work, a recently presented experimental technique, based on the use of thermochromic liquid crystals and digital image analysis, has been employed in order to assess the temperature polarization phenomena. The local heat transfer coefficient distribution on th…

Experimental assessment of the shield-to-salt-fog properties of basalt and glass fiber reinforced composites in cork core sandwich panels applications

2018

Abstract In this paper, the effect of salt-fog exposition on the mechanical behavior of sandwich panels having cork agglomerate core was investigated. In particular, the aim of this research work is to assess the shield function of unidirectional basalt and E-glass reinforced polymer on the aging and failure mechanism of the core when such class of material are destined to operate in hostile environments (e.g., marine environment). To do this, the manufactured sandwich panels were exposed up to 60 days to salt-fog environment, according to ASTM B 117 standard. Unaged and aged specimens were analyzed through three point bending tests after aging time of 10, 25 and 60 days. Digital Image Corr…
