Effect of some additives on the development of spinel-based glass-ceramic glazes for floor-tiles

Abstract The feasibility of developing spinel-based glass-ceramic glazes from a glass with composition in the system ZnO–MgO–B 2 O 3 –Al 2 O 3 –SiO 2 was examined. To do it additional fluxes and/or nucleants were added to a parent glass before melting. Pressed pellets of powdered glasses were submitted to standard thermal treatments up to 1200 °C. The crystallization path and the microstructural development at several temperatures were followed by several experimental techniques. The results showed that additions of TiO 2 as nucleant or additional B 2 O 3 as flux to the chosen glass favored the crystallization of cordierite or mullite as main crystalline phase. Abstract A kilometre-scale shear zone is recognized in the Cambro–Ordovician schist of the Bossost dome, a Variscan metamorphic and structural dome in the Axial Zone of the central Pyrenees. Non-coaxial deformation is recorded by rotated garnet and staurolite porphyroblasts following regional metamorphism M 1 , while coaxial conditions prevailed during later contact metamorphic M 2 growth of andalusite and cordierite. Mineral compositions and bulk rock analyses show that garnet–staurolite–andalusite–cordierite assemblages are significantly enriched in Mg and Mn over the garnet–staurolite assemblage, which lacks sufficient Mg for cordierite to form. Effect of pH, iron and aluminum on survival of early life history stages of the endangered freshwater pearl mussel, Margaritifera margaritifera

Glochidium larvae and juveniles of the endangered freshwater pearl mussel Margaritifera margaritifera may be sensitive to low pH and metal exposure, but to our knowledge, no tolerance tests have been performed. Therefore, we exposed glochidia, fish-attached glochidia, and juveniles of the pearl mussel to low pH and increased iron (Fe) and aluminum (Al) by using realistic pH (6.0–4.5), Fe (0.5–2.0 mg L−1), and Al (0.25–1.0 mg L−1) levels periodically observed in this study site. Survival of glochidia decreased with decreasing pH, increasing Fe, and increasing Al, as well as with increasing Fe + Al concentration in a 72 h exposure. Plasma nitriding is a method of surface modification using a glow discharge technology to introduce nitrogen into the surface of a metal, which subsequently diffuses into the material. Effect of plasticizers (water and glycerol) on the diffusion of a small molecule in iota-carrageenan biopolymer films for edible coating application.

Translational diffusion of a fluorescein probe has been measured in iota-carrageenan edible films containing different amounts of glycerol (0, 15, 30, and 45%), using fluorescence recovery after photobleaching (FRAP) experiments. The effects of this plasticizer as well as the plasticizing effect of water on the diffusion of fluorescein have been studied in this edible coating mainly composed of natural biopolymer. Diffusion coefficients of about 10(-13) m2 s(-1) have been measured in these films for water activity (aw) lower than 0.7. Speciation of Copper in Enriched Agricultural Lime

Agricultural liming materials are used to lower soil acidity and to improve microbial functionality and plant growth. A brownish colored agricultural lime was found to contain up to 180 mg kg ―1 Cu, an amount well above any fertilizing materials code threshold. The dark color of the milled material was due to ample black and brown dendrites consisting of the tectomanganate mineral romanechite (ideally (Ba,H 2 O) 2 (Mn 4+ ,Mn 3+ ) 5 O 10 ) and a mixture of the two nanocrystalline Fe oxides ferrihydrite and goethite. Mapping of corrosion products of highly altered archeological iron using voltammetry of microparticles

The application of the voltammetry of microparticles to identify corrosion products on different localizations of highly altered archeological iron pieces is described. The use of graphite pencil methodology permits to mapping different corrosion products, namely, akaganeite, goethite, hematite, jarosite, magnetite, maghemite and siderite, in iron artifacts. Atmospheric Corrosion Investigation in Industrial, Marine and Rural Environments in South-East Brazil

ASTM 283-C, AISI 304 and 316-L steel specimens (called coupons) were exposed in marine, industrial and rural area(s) for different periods ranging between 1–12 months, in four different season campaigns. The corrosion rate was determined by chemical loss measurements. Rust characterization was performed by XRD, SEM, optical, and Mossbauer spectroscopy (in transmission and backscattering geometry). Superparamagnetic maghemite and goethite were found as corrosion products. Magnetic goethite and feroxyhite decrease with time of exposure. Lepidochrosite is detected and its intensity increase with the atmospheric exposure time. The results obtained from XRD and Mossbauer are in good agreement.

Transformation of clay-sized minerals in soils exposed to prolonged regular alternation of redox conditions

Abstract The direction of the transformation of Fe-bearing minerals under harshly changing redox conditions is still under debate. Some studies suggest preferential accumulation of weakly crystalline Fe oxides while other studies showed that repeated redox cycles favour the presence of crystalline phases.
