In-situ transformation of iron-bearing minerals in marshland-derived paddy subsoil

2016

Transformations of Fe-bearing minerals under alternating redox conditions are not fully understood. In-situ approaches under field conditions have rarely been used. We exposed mesh bags containing ferrihydrite, goethite or nontronite to changing redox conditions in subsoil that had been under paddy management for 100, 700 and 2000 years. After 12 months, the minerals were retrieved and analysed for organic carbon and by X-ray diffraction; in addition, nontronite was analysed for cation exchange capacity and by Mossbauer spectroscopy at 278 and 4.2 K. Field exposure of the test minerals was complemented by measurements of soil redox potential and analyses of soil water. Minerals accumulated …

Ab Initio Simulation of Clusters: Relativistic Effects in Structure and Bonding of Noble Metal Nanoparticles

2005

Resolving the atomic and electronic structures of nanoclusters represents an important preliminary for their controlled use in future nanotechnologies. Here we show through the comparison of density-functional calculations with high-resolution photoelectron spectroscopy that 1.4 nm nanoparticles of silver (negatively charged clusters of 53 to 58 atoms) are icosahedral-based structures displaying a perfect icosahedral-induced electronic shell structure for Ag 55 − and slightly perturbed shell structures for the neighboring cluster sizes. At variance, 55-atom gold clusters exhibit several isomeric structures of low symmetry, with a largely diminished electronic shell structure. This surprisin…

Electrochemical Amination of Less-Activated Alkylated Arenes Using Boron-Doped Diamond Anodes

2016

The anodic C–H amination of aromatic compounds is a powerful and versatile method for the synthesis of aniline derivatives. By using boron-doped diamond (BDD) anodes, a method initially described by Yoshida et al. for electron-rich arenes was expanded to less-activated aromatic systems e.g., simple alkylated benzene derivatives. Anodes based on sp3 carbon seem to be the key for the electrochemical amination reaction. The corresponding primary anilines are obtained in good yields. Despite the cationic intermediates of the electrolytic reaction tert-butyl moieties are tolerated.

A Novel Cathode Material for Cathodic Dehalogenation of 1,1-Dibromo Cyclopropane Derivatives.

2015

Leaded bronze turned out to be an excellent cathode material for the dehalogenation reaction of cyclopropanes without affecting the strained molecular entity. With this particular alloy, beneficial properties of lead cathodes are conserved, whereas the corrosion of cathode is efficiently suppressed. The solvent in the electrolyte determines whether a complete debromination reaction is achieved or if the process can be selectively stopped at the monobromo cyclopropane intermediate. The electroorganic conversion tolerates a variety of functional groups and can be conducted at rather complex substrates like cyclosporine A. This approach allows the sustainable preparation of cyclopropane deriva…

530Ma syntectonic syenites and granites in NW Namibia — Their relation with collision along the junction of the Damara and Kaoko belts

2012

Abstract The Lower Ugab and Goantagab structural domains are located at the junction between the N–S trending Kaoko and the E–W trending Damara belts (NW Namibia), where Neoproterozoic metavolcano-sedimentary sequences were intruded by several syenitic/granitic plutons. We present here new U–Pb ages on zircon grains from the Voetspoor and Doros plutons. Together with petrological, geochemical and structural data we evaluate the timing of the deformation and relation to the geodynamics during the final stage of Gondwana amalgamation. The plutons are composed of three main rock types: hornblende quartz-syenite, syenodiorite and biotite granite. The two former are predominant and show genetic …

Phase equilibria modelling of kyanite-bearing anatectic paragneisses from the central Grenville Province

2008

Kyanite-bearing paragneisses from the Manicouagan Imbricate Zone and its footwall (high-P belt of the central Grenville Province) preserve evidence of partial melting with development of metamorphic textures involving biotite-garnet ± kyanite ± plagioclase ± K-feldspar-quartz. Garnet in these rocks displays a variety of zoning patterns with respect to Ca. Pseudosection modelling in the Na O-CaO-K O-FeO-MgO-Al O - SiO -H O-TiO -O (NCKFMASHTO) system using measured bulk rock compositions accounts for the textural evolution of two aluminous and two sub-aluminous samples from the presumed thermal peak to conditions at which retained melt solidified. The prograde features are best explained by p…

Coded Excitation of the Fundamental Flexural Guided Wave in Coated Bone Phantoms

2017

There is an increasing interest of using ultrasonic guided waves to assess long cortical bones. In particular, a method of ultrasonic estimation of cortical thickness based on the fundamental flexural guided wave (FFGW), generally consistent with the A0 Lamb mode, has proven to be promising in vitro and modeling studies. Soft-tissue coating on top of the bone makes, however, the related in vivo application challenge. Visibility of FFGW on top of the soft tissue is not good due to the characteristic displacement profile of this mode, and due to its relatively high attenuation in the bone and surrounding tissue. Moreover, the soft tissue provides a direct propagation path for ultrasonic modes…

Obstructing propagation of interfering modes improves detection of guided waves in coated bone models

2014

Interference due to wave propagation in soft tissue that covers the bone is a major challenge to in vivo assessment of the fundamental flexural guided wave (FFGW) in bone. To improve signal-to-interference ratio (SIR) we propose to obstruct the propagation of interfering modes by locally deforming the coating by external mechanical compression. This approach was modeled by 2D finite-element transient domain (FEMTD) simulations in a fluid-coated (7 mm) solid plate (3 mm). The fluid layer mimics the soft tissue that covers the bone. A single emitter or a 6-element phased array excited ultrasound pulses at 50 kHz on the surface of the coating, and a receiver array was placed on the surface, 20…

Authigenic phase formation and microbial activity control Zr, Hf, and rare earth element distributions in deep-sea brine sediments

2014

Abstract. Sediments collected from hypersaline and anoxic deep-sea basins in the eastern Mediterranean (Thetis, Kryos, Medee, and Tyro) were characterised in terms of their mineralogical composition, the distributions of rare earth elements (REE), Zr, and Hf and their content of microbial DNA. We identified two major mineralogical fractions: one fraction of detritic origin was composed of quartz, gypsum, and low-Mg calcite bioclasts (with 0 < Mg < 0.07%) and another fraction of authigenic origin constituted of halite, dolomite, high-Mg calcite (with a Mg content of up to 22%) and rare bischofite and showed a textural evidence of microbial assemblages. We found that in the Medee and Ty…
