Altari
2019
the contribution identifies and analyzes the success and operational fallout in Sicilian architecture of the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, of models for altars disseminated through the press. The theme of the altars indeed presents punctual connections with the world of model prints. As in other cases, these engravings were not only aimed at architects but were also intended for a wider world of operators, especially wood sculptors. Between the end of the seventeenth century and the first half of the eighteenth century, the project area in question knows mutations starting from new texts.

Statistical analysis of engraving traces on a 3D digital model of prehistoric stone stelae
2016
International audience; Studying cultural heritage artefacts, using 3D digital models, is gaining interest. It not only allows applications in documentation and visualisation, but also permits further contact-less examination. In this paper, we are presenting a statistical analysis of stone engravings based on features that were semi-automatically extracted from 3D acquisition data. Our objects of study are two Neolithic stone stelae and a faithful replica that was created in the course of an archaeological study. We use common statistical methods and investigate the populations of depth and diameter of the engraving traces, as well as their correlation. We observe that the erosion of the t…
Wavefront holoscopy: application of digital in-line holography for the inspection of engraved marks in progressive addition lenses
2014
Progressive addition lenses (PALs) are engraved with permanent marks at standardized locations in order to guarantee correct centering and alignment throughout the manufacturing and mounting processes. Out of the production line, engraved marks provide useful information about the PAL as well as act as locator marks to re-ink again the removable marks. Even though those marks should be visible by simple visual inspection with the naked eye, engraving marks are often faint and weak, obscured by scratches, and partially occluded and difficult to recognize on tinted or antireflection-coated lenses. Here, we present an extremely simple optical device (named as wavefront holoscope) for visualiza…
Ivy and Bones: ruins and reversibility during the Blitz
2012
"Ivy and bones: ruins and reversibility during the Blitz" examines how the representation of the ruins of the Blitz is informed by the aesthetic and semiotic tension between abstraction, modernist purity and picturesque accretion. Subsequently building on the notion of reversibility, it explores the way wartime destruction and/or cultural decline is recorded as well as counteracted and compensated for in works by Elizabeth Bowen, Herbert Furst, Claire Leighton, Rose Macaulay, John Piper, and Virginia Woolf. The trope of reversibility provides a template to consider some of the sites where aesthetic conflicts are re-enacted, from blitzed spaces to the printed page as threatened modernist art…

La otra cara del Dios, Patria y Rey: violencia y destrucción en Valencia durante la Guerra de la Independencia.
2016
There are so many reasons why the Peninsular War (1808-1814) is one of a kind chapter of our history. The deep politicization of the city of Valencia during this conflict explains the existence of cruel and violent episodes. These ones weren’t forgotten, but of course they were properly overcome through the years by other expressions of patriotism and heroism. So, the goal of this paper is to examine and think about the artistic expression of these violent events, their functions, evolution and, in conclusion, their lives.
2022
This article presents four engravings that bear witness to the most significant stages of the celebrations organised in Catania for the funeral of the Prince of Biscari, Ignazio Paternò Castello, on 2 September 1786. This graphic corpus constitutes the last opportunity to celebrate the prince’s memory and prominence based on the models established by European courts, but at the same time it reveals more recondite aspects of the research into phenomena of emulation in architecture and self-representation that have not emerged to date from studies on the aristocrat from Catania and that reflect above all the way of life of a cultured personality driven by great ambitions. The aim of the resea…
Disegni e incisioni di Tarquinio Ligustri da Viterbo conservati presso collezioni private e pubbliche italiane, francesi e tedesche
2021
In international, Italian, French and German public collections, but also among private collections, there are architectural drawings by the quadrature painter Tarquinio Ligustri da Viterbo, made after 1596 and depicting portals of his invention. This corpus is mostly unpublished and has remained anonymous for centuries. It consists of a consistent body of preparatory drawings kept at the Kunstbibliothek in Berlin, and a small number of engravings made from them, distributed in loose form but also bound in a rare miscellaneous volume published in the second half of the seventeenth century by Giovanni Giacomo De Rossi‘s famous Roman printing house Alla Pace. The detailed examination of the d…
