Galerías de «mujeres ilustres» o el sinuoso camino de la excepción a la norma cotidiana (ss. XV-XVIII).

2000

Between the fifteenth and the eighteenth centuries, collections of «illustrious women» were a very widely spread genre all over Europe. Humanistic and courtly in their origins, they were linked to the discourse of women´s «excellence» and they transmitted the values of privilege and aristocratic ethics. At the same time, they showed ambivalent, disturbing and powerful images of «women on top». The fact that its popularity seems to have increased during the eighteenth century and that they took more widespread forms such as articles in the periodicals raises interesting questions about the meanings those images, opposed in many ways to Enlightenment values and attitudes, could have for eight…

How the Better Reason Wins

2020

Abstract This paper considers Mendelssohn’s attempt at a definition of Enlightenment in terms of Bildung, comprising the theoretical element of the enlightenment of reason with the practical requirements of culture. To avoid a possible dialectics of enlightenment, where the very methods one uses to enlighten harbour the seeds of new blindness, Mendelssohn advocates considering the lively connections between people, the role of traditions and personal relations in the formation of an individual self, and the connections we should have to our past, present, and future. Thus, his essay from 1784 can be read as an apt defence of a dialogical notion of freedom within the Enlightenment era.

The role of punishment in the works of Adam Smith

2009

The reformation of criminal justice is one of the great themes in Enlightenment culture and concerned its main exponents from Montesquieu to Beccaria, Filangieri, Bentham. One of the traits of greater modernity in the theories worked out by juridical Enlightenment is the resort to the utilitarianinspired economic analysis. Adam Smith doesn't back out of this scientific and civil commitment, but his doctrine appears significantly different though contemporary to juridical Enlightenment, and is also based on economic argumentations. In this work we will look through the main writings which contain the Smithian thought in search of those parts dealing with the theme of punishment and its socia…

INTERACTION BETWEEN RELIGION AND POLITICS UN WESTERN AND EASTERN EUROPE: THE COMMON AND THE DISTINCTIVE FEATURES

2009

The common and the distinctive features in the interaction between religion and politics in Western and Eastern Europe are discussed in the paper. At the beginning, the relative, flowing character of the concepts used is outlined, and the difficulties are indicated in making generalizations, since Europe sees great diversity regarding the involvement of religions in politics. The author also outlines the causes for greater interest of religious groups in politics – a large number of religious practitioners refuse to acquiesce with the place allocated for religion in the private space, where it was positioned by the Enlightenment. In the civil society, which strives to facilitate the partici…

Owning (and reading?) politeness books in the eighteenth century: an analysis through private libraries

2020

2012

International audience; The paper analyses issues of legal classification during the Age of the Enlightenment by examining links between general structures and declared intentions in three major works of philosophic and legal lexicography: Diderot and d’Alembert’s Encyclopédie , De Felice’s Code de l’Humanité, and the Dictionnaire de Jurisprudence in the Encyclopédie méthodique. What consideration is given to natural law in encyclopaedic compilations? Do dictionaries and encyclopaedias play a part in the modern codification process?

Relativism and radical conservatism

2019

The chapter tackles the complex, tension-ridden, and often paradoxical relationship between relativism and conservatism. We focus particularly on radical conservatism, an early twentieth-century German movement that arguably constitutes the climax of conservatism’s problematic relationship with relativism. We trace the shared genealogy of conservatism and historicism in nineteenth-century Counter-Enlightenment thought and interpret radical conservatism’s ambivalent relation to relativism as reflecting this heritage. Emphasizing national particularity, historical uniqueness, and global political plurality, Carl Schmitt and Hans Freyer moved in the tradition of historicism, stopping short of …
