Communities are kept alive by the constant effort make by their members to take care of common good and practice of crafts of peace. This is a study of Montesquieu's and Beccaria's views on the right to apply death punishment as stated in the great Encyclopedia and in the Supplements. Without providing any unique answer to the question whether society may claim the right of life and death, the encyclopaedists reconsidered and diffused the reformism of the major authors of the eighteenth-century legal culture, thus promoting a societal justice before the Revolution.

Este artículo revisa el resurgimiento de la noción de la «Ilustración católica» a partir de la década de 2010, el debate historiográfico que ha generado y el lugar que el ilustrado español Benito Jerónimo Feijoo (1676-1764) ocupa en él, en el marco de las controversias a propósito de las relaciones entre género, catolicismo e Ilustración (y más ampliamente, modernidad).
