The effect of Betanin parenteral pretreatment on Jejunal and pulmonary tissue histological architecture and inflammatory response after Jejunal ische…
2019
Intestinal ischemic-reperfusion (IR) injury has detrimental effects on both local and distant organs in the body. Betanin is known for its antioxidant properties, and it is found mostly in vegetables. Therefore, the aim of the present study was to test the hypothesis that betanin administration prior intestinal IR, may be beneficial in protecting jejunal mucosa and lung parenchyma against IR damage. Male specific pathogen-free Charles River Wistar rats were used (n = 42). Betanin (50 mg/kg) was administered intraperitoneally 30 min before ischemia of the superior mesenteric artery lasting 1 h, followed by 1, 4 and 24 h of reperfusion. Immunohistochemical as well as histomorphometrical analy…

Surveillance of enteric virus infections in a neonatal intensive care unit.
2005
Objective. To investigate the epidemiology of neonatal viral gastroenteritis compared to the circulation of enteric viruses in children, 109 newborns in the NICU of Mother and Child Department and 214 children with enteritis admitted to the “G. Di Cristina” Children’s Hospital in Palermo were monitored for Rotavirus, Adenovirus, Astrovirus and Norovirus infections. Methods. Stool samples were examined by EIA to detect viral antigens. Rotavirus strains were subjected to P- and G-typing. Results. A Norovirus strain was detected in one neonatal stool specimen whereas an astrovirus strain was dectected in two neonatal specimens. No Rotavirus or Adenovirus infection was identified among the newb…

SUPERIOR MESENTERIC VEIN THROMBOSIS AND CYTOMEGAOLOVIRUS: A DIAGNOSTIC DILEMMA, A CASE REPORT AND REVIEW OF THE LITERATURE
2014
Superior mesenteric vein thrombosis (SMVT) is a rare condition, usually caused by infections, intra-abdominal inflammatory diseases, portal hypertension, hypercoagulable states, or contraceptive therapy. Due to its vague symptomatology, SMVT is often diagnosed only after an abdominal contrast-enhanced computed computed tomography (CT) scan. In this article, we present a case of SMVT in a patient with a history of contraceptive drug use and a recent cytomegalovirus infection. A 36-year-old female was admitted to our department with the clinical symptoms of an acute appendicitis. the patient was a smoker and had been using hormonal contraceptive for over a year. surgery was deemed the best co…
SUPERIOR MESENTERIC ARTERY SYNDROME: CLINICAL, ENDOSCOPICAL AND RADIOLOGICAL CORRELATIONS ACCORDING TO A SINGLE-CENTER EXPERIENCE
2015
Background and aim: The superior mesenteric artery (SMA) syndrome is a rare entity presenting with upper gastrointestinal tract obstruction and weight loss, due to the compression of the third part of duodenum between the aorta and the SMA. Studies to determine the optimal methods of diagnosis and treatment are essential. This study aims to analyze the clinical presentation, the doagnosis and the management of this syndrome. Material and medthods: Over a 2-year (2013-2014), 8 cases of SMA syndrome (out of 2074 esophago-gastro-duodenoscopies, EGDS) were initially suspected through EGDS. Therefore, these patients performed computed tomography (CT) scan to confirm the diagnosis. Once the diagn…
Prevalence of sexually transmitted infections and enteric protozoa among homosexual men in western Sicily (south Italy)
2012
Introduction. In recent years an increase in the number of sexu- ally transmitted infections (STIs) in men who have sex with men (MSM) has been reported in different industrialised countries. Because few epidemiological data on the STIs/MSM population in Sicily are available, a survey was conducted to assess the preva- lence of STIs/enteric protozoa and risky sexual behaviours among MSM in western Sicily. Methods. In 2010, 74 MSM with median age of 30 years old, were recruited via networks. All participants to the study were interviewed by anonymous self-administered questionnaire in order to collect social/demographic information, clinic data and STI-related risky sexual behaviours. After …
