Thermodynamic studies of octyltrimethylammonium chloride in water
1992
Densities, heat capacities, enthalpies of dilution at 298 K and osmotic coefficients at 310 K of octyltrimethylammonium chloride were measured as functions of concentration. From the experimental data, the partial molar volumes, heat capacities, relative enthalpies, nonideal free energies and entropies at 298 K were derived as functions of concentration. A comparison between the above data and those of dodecyltrimethylammonium chloride reported in the literature shows that the increase of the alkyl chain length shifts the apparent molar volumevs. concentration curves towards greater values and the heat capacity, relative enthalpy and free energyvs. concentration curves towards smaller value…

Medium enthalpy geothermal systems in carbonate reservoirs, the Western Sicily example.
2013
The multidisciplinary and integrated review of existing data (mainly acquired during oil exploration), specifically reread for geothermal purposes, and the integration with new data acquired in particular key areas, such as the Mazara Del Vallo site in the southern part of western Sicily, allowed us to better understand this -regional scale- medium-enthalpy geothermal system (with measured temperatures up to 100 °C), to reconstruct the modalities and peculiarities of fluids circulation, and to evaluate the geothermal potentialities of western Sicily. We suggest that these findings could be taken as exemplificative of the behavior of low-to medium enthalpy geothermal systems hosted in carbon…
Investigation of Solid-Liquid Phase Transition for Sn-54wt%In Alloy by Positron Anihilation Spectroscopy
1995
The peak coincidence counting rate F(T) was measured for Sn-54wt%In alloy at the temperature range from room temperature to 400°C. It was observed that for both heating and cooling run, F(Τ) parameter changes . in the liquid phase. These changes were related to disintegration of SnII microcrystals. From a simple trapping model the defect disintegration enthalpy, H1,, was calculated. For heating and cooling run, the value of H1 was 0.53 ± 0.03 eV and 0.67 ± 0.07 eV, respectively. For well-annealed and cold rolled samples we find only one component, equal 200 ps, in the lifetime spectrum. PACS numbers: 64.70.Dv, 61.72.Cc, 78.70.Bj.
Calorimetric and Volumetric Investigations of the Effect of the Hydrophobicity of the Surfactant on the Binding between (Ethylene oxide)13-(propylene…
2004
The enthalpy and the volume of transfer (DeltaY(t)) of the unassociated (ethylene oxide)(13)-(propylene oxide)(30)-(ethylene oxide)(13) (L64) from water to the aqueous sodium alkanoate solutions as functions of the surfactant concentrations (m(S)) were determined at 298 K. The surfactants studied are sodium hexanoate, sodium heptanoate, sodium octanoate, sodium undecanoate, and sodium dodecanoate. As a general feature, for the short alkyl chain surfactants, DeltaY(t) describes an S-shaped curve in the range of m(S) analyzed whereas for the more hydrophobic surfactants the DeltaY(t) vs m(S) trends exhibit maxima which appear at ms values very close to the critical micellar concentration in w…
Binding between (Ethylene Oxide)13−(Propylene Oxide)30−(Ethylene Oxide)13 and Sodium Decanoate. Volume, Enthalpy, and Heat Capacity Studies
2002
Volume, enthalpy, and heat capacity of transfer (ΔYt) of (ethylene oxide)13−(propylene oxide)30−(ethylene oxide)13 (L64), at some concentrations, from water to the aqueous sodium decanoate (NaDec) solutions as functions of the surfactant concentration (mS) were determined at 298 K. The copolymer was studied in both the unassociated and associated forms. For a given L64 concentration (mC), the ΔYt vs mS profiles for the volume and the enthalpy are equal but different from that of the heat capacity because the latter contains also the relaxation terms. The experimental data were analyzed by assuming the distribution of L64 between the aqueous and the micellar phases and the shift of micelliza…
A Chemical Index Inspired by Biological Plastic Evolution: Valence-Isoelectronic Series of Aromatics
2004
Plastic evolution is a new perspective of the evolutionary process conjugating the effect, on one hand, of the acquired characters and, on the other, of the relationships that emerge among the principle of evolutionary indeterminacy, the principle of morphologic determination, and natural selection. Plastic evolution is applied to design the coordination index Ic. Ic is used to characterize the valence-isoelectronic series of cyclopentadiene, benzene, toluene, and styrene and compared to charge indices for dipole moment. The parameters needed to calculate Ic are minus the standard enthalpy of formation T, molecular surface area S, and molecular weight W. With the exception of the O heteromo…
Biosensor-based kinetic and thermodynamic characterization of opioids interaction with human μ-opioid receptor.
2019
Development of opioid analgesics with minimal side effects requires substantial knowledge on structure-kinetic and -thermodynamic relationship of opioid-receptor interactions. Here, combined kinetics and thermodynamics of opioid agonist binding to human μ-opioid receptor (h-μOR) was investigated using real-time label-free surface plasmon resonance (SPR)-based method. The N-terminal end truncated and C-terminal 6His-tagged h-μOR was constructed and expressed in E. coli. Receptor was purified, detergent-solubilized and characterized by circular dichroism. The uniform immobilization of h-μOR on Ni-NTA chips was achieved using hybrid capture-coupling approach followed by reconstitution in lipid…
A Solar Pond for Feeding a Thermoelectric Generator or an Organic Rankine Cycle System
2017
The world energy demand is continuously growing, which means an increase in consumption for all modern fuels or stronger effort on the development and improvement of renewable technologies. Moreover, Developing Countries claims more energy and they have often wide unutilized or unusable lands. The solar energy represents a useful opportunity for these Countries. The Solar Pond is both a solar collector and a thermal storage for long period and is suitable to use in wide sunny areas. Solar pond technology is able to supply heat for several applications requiring low-grade thermal energy or for electrical power production. In order to produce electrical energy from solar ponds it is necessary…
DSC study on hyaluronan drying and hydration
2011
Abstract The processes of hyaluronan (HYA) drying and hydration were studied using differential scanning calorimetry. In the first approach the isoconversional Kissinger–Akahita–Sunose (KAS) method was applied in order to determine actual activation energies of evaporation of pure water and water from concentrated HYA solutions. Since the evaporation is a single-step process, the activation energies for pure water provided results consistent with tabulated values of evaporation enthalpies. In the course of water evaporation from hyaluronan solution a break in increasing enthalpy followed by a decrease below 0.34 g of water per 1 g of HYA was observed. This result confirmed earlier observati…
