Chlorinated and methylated dibenzothiophenes: Preparation of the model compounds and their analysis from some environmental samples

Abstract Polychlorinated and polymethylated dibenzothiophenes if occuring in the environment can cause environmental hazards and problems like chlorinated dibenzodioxins and dibenzofurans. Some chlorinated and methylated dibenzothiophenes have been synthesized to serve as model compounds in environmental and toxicological analysis. The synthesis mixtures and some environmental samples have been analyzed by high resolution GC/low resolution MS. This investigation showed that the concentrations of these compounds in environmental samples were below ppb level but it did not exclude the occurence of these compounds in our environment. More investigation is needed.

Environmental and economic profile of six typologies of wastewater treatment plants

The objective of wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) is to prevent pollution. However, it is necessary to assess their sustainability in order to ensure that pollution is being removed, not displaced. In this research, the performance of 24 WWTPs has been evaluated using a streamlined Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) with Eutrophication Potential (EP) and Global Warming Potential (GWP) as environmental indicators, and operational costs as economic indicators. A multigenerational approach can detect early Cd pollution in Chironomus riparius.

Abstract Cadmium (Cd) is a non-essential highly toxic metal and its presence in the environment has been a concern over the years. On the present study we adopt the spiked water exposure scenario to study early Cd contamination across five generations of the model organism Chironomus riparius. Animals were, at the beginning of each generation, submitted to 0, 1, 3.2, 10, 32 and 100 μg/L of Cd. Soil plate bioassay: an effective method to determine ecotoxicological risks.

Heavy metals have become one of the most serious anthropogenic stressors for plants and other living organisms. Having efficient and feasible bioassays available to assess the ecotoxicological risks deriving from soil pollution is necessary. Dating of a Sediment Core by 210Pbex Method and Pb Pollution Chronology in the Palermo Gulf (Italy)

Within a more general study on marine sediments in the Gulf of Palermo (Sicily, Italy), the 210Pbex dating method (using a model with constant sedimentation rate) has been applied to one sediment core. The main goal of the research was to study the Pb pollution chronology. Dating of the core has allowed evaluating the time evolution of the gulf lead concentrations. Specific activities of 137Cs have also been measured in the sediment core sections as an independent confirmation of the chronology derived by the 210Pbex method. This study describes the impact of airborne pollution resulting from mining and smelting activities on the soils of the Almalyk mining and industrial area (NE Uzbekistan). Samples were collected along a transect downwind of the industrial area. Enriched contents of some metals were found in the upper soil layers near the metallurgical complex (Zn≤3010 mg kg(-1), Pb≤630 mg kg(-1), Cd≤30 mg kg(-1)) which suggests that these metals were derived from local stack emissions.
