Osseous oral hyaline ring granuloma mimicking a mandible tumor in a child with congenital agenesis of the corpus callosum
2017
Background Hyaline ring granuloma (HRG) of the oral cavity is an uncommon disorder considered to be a foreign-body reaction resulting from implantation of food vegetable particles. Microscopically, it is characterized by the presence of structures of hyaline rings in an inflamed fibrous tissue background, which contains multinucleated giant cells. Material and methods We present the case of a 4-year-old boy diagnosed with a mandible osseous HRG, which showed clinical and tomographic aspects suggestive of an aggressive bone tumor. Results The patient underwent surgical exploration and histopathologic analysis showed fragments composed predominantly of widespread dense connective tissue with …
Morphological characterization of the blood cells in the endangered Sicilian endemic pond turtle,Emys trinacris(Testudines: Emydidae)
2014
AbstractIn this study, measurements of morphological parameters, sizes and frequencies of peripheral blood cells (erythrocytes, leukocytes, thrombocytes) on blood smear preparation devices stained with May-Grunwald stain were evaluated for both sexes in 20 Emys trinacris (Testudines: Emydidae) specimens. Erythrocytes were higher in male than in female specimens. The leukocyte of E. trinacris contains eosinophil, basophil, monocyte, heterophil and lymphocyte. The eosinophil was higher in males than in females whereas lymphocytes were higher in females than in males. The erythrocyte morphological parameters (EL [erythrocyte length], EW [erythrocyte width], L/W [length/width], ES [erythrocyte …
The role of intact oleosin for stabilization and function of oleosomes.
2013
Lipid storage in plants is achieved among all plant species by formation of oleosomes, enclosing oil (triacylglycerides) in small subcellular droplets. Seeds are rich in this pre-emulsified oil to provide a sufficient energy reservoir for growing. The triacylglyceride core of the oleosomes is surrounded by a phospholipid monolayer containing densely packed proteins called oleosins. They are anchored in the triacylglycerides core with a hydrophobic domain, while the hydrophilic termini remain on the surface. These specialized proteins are expressed during seed development and maturation. Particularly, they play a major role in the stabilization and function of oleosomes. To better understand…
Internal dynamics and energy transfer in dansylated POPAM dendrimers and their eosin complexes.
2010
Internal dynamics of dansylated poly(propyleneamine) dendrimers (POPAM, G1-G4) in solution and excitation energy transfer from dansyls to eosin in POPAM-eosin complexes have been studied by time-resolved fluorescence spectroscopy and molecular dynamics (MD) simulations. Combining the results from fluorescence anisotropy and the MD simulation studies suggests three time domains for the internal dynamics of the G3 and G4 generations, about 60 ps for motions of the outer-sphere dansyls, 500-1000 ps for restricted motions of back-folded dansyls, and 1500-2600 ps for the overall rotation. For the smaller generations, the contribution from the restricted motions was not entirely evident. Eosin bi…
Norm values for eosinophil cationic protein in nasal secretions: influence of specimen collection
1999
Background Eosinophil granulocytes play an important role in allergic inflammation of the nasal mucosa. Eosinophil cationic protein (ECP) is a specific eosinophil granule protein released upon activation of these cells. ECP concentration in nasal secretions has been demonstrated to be a good marker for the activity of eosinophilic nasal mucosal inflammation. The clinical use of such a marker requires defined values which are regarded as pathological or within normal range. In analyses of nasal secretion samples, the sampling method has an important influence on the data obtained. Objective We investigated ECP levels in nasal secretions (NS) of healthy volunteers obtained by seven different …
Comparison of the effects of fluticasone propionate, aqueous nasal spray and levocabastine on inflammatory cells in nasal lavage and clinical activit…
1999
BACKGROUND Treatment options for allergic rhinitis include antihistamines, decongestants, anticholinergics, cromolyn sodium and corticosteroids. As the nose is a small organ, comprising less than 1% of total body mass and surface area, it seems logical to confine treatment of rhinitis to the diseased organ. OBJECTIVE To evaluate the effects of therapy with intranasal fluticasone propionate (FP), both on subjective symptoms and pathophysiological mechanisms, in rhinitis patients during pollen season when the patients were symptomatic. METHODS We used a double-blind, placebo (PLA)-controlled, randomized, double dummy, parallel group study of the effect of 6 weeks treatment. The double-blind c…
Controlled trial for long-term low-dose erythromycin after sinus surgery for chronic rhinosinusitis
2014
Objectives/Hypothesis The efficacy of macrolides in chronic rhinosinusitis (CRS) is still under controversy. To date, only two double-blind, placebo-controlled studies have been published with differing results. None of these studies investigated the possible benefit of macrolides in the postoperative period. We conducted an investigator-initiated clinical trial using 250-mg erythromycin once a day over a period of 3 months, beginning the administration of either erythromycin or placebo 2 weeks after a surgical intervention for CRS. Study Design Randomized double-blind, placebo-controlled trial. Methods The concentrations of eosinophilic cationic protein (ECP) and myeloperoxidase in nasal s…
Mandibulary Eosinophilic Granuloma: Case Series
2008
Eosinophilic granuloma is a proliferation of Langerhans cells in the bones that most commonly involving the skeletal system. The disease generally affects children or young adults with predominance in males and it is characterized by a single or multiple skeletal lesions. This study describes a few cases of mandibular Eosinophilic Granuloma and the effects of surgical curettage of lesions
[Diagnosis in pediatric "allergic" patients].
1998
Background. A clinician who deals with allergic patients needs the help of in vivo and in vitro allergometric tests in order to decide difficult therapeutic choices. Methods. In the section of Clinical Immunology of the Institute of Paediatrics (Palermo University) two allergologic tests, prick and MAST-CIA, have been studied retrospectively, they were performed on patients observed for allergic disorders over 5 years. The aim of this study was to evaluate the diagnostic capacity of these tests "on the field". The study population is made of 459 patients (age range from 6 months to 16 years) affected with asthma, rhinitis, presumably allergic dermatitis, association of asthma and dermatitis…
