Under-enrolment of women to randomized clinical trials, including chronic hepatitis C, has long been recognized. The aim of this study was to identify factors predictive of sustained virological response (SVR) to PEG IFN/Ribavirin antiviral therapy in relation to gender and reproductive status of female patients involved. Seven hundred and forty-six treatment-naïve patients (431 men, 315 women) treated with Peg-IFNα-2a (180 μg/week) or Peg-IFNα-2b (1.5 μg/kg/week) plus ribavirin (800–1400 mg/day) for 24 or 48 weeks were studied between 2006 and 2010. Clinical outcome of HBeAg-negative chronic hepatitis B in relation to virological response to lamivudine.

The effect of lamivudine treatment on the outcome of patients with hepatitis B e antigen (HBeAg)-negative chronic hepatitis is unclear. In a retrospective multicenter study, we have analyzed the virological events observed during lamivudine therapy in patients with HBeAg-negative chronic hepatitis and evaluated the correlation between virological response and clinical outcomes. Among 656 patients (mean age 49.1 years) included in the database, 54% had chronic hepatitis, 30% had Child-Turcotte-Pugh (CTP) A cirrhosis, and 16% had CTP B/C cirrhosis. L'epatite virale C (HCV) è un importante problema di salute pubblica e la sua eliminazione entro il 2030 indicata come target dall’Organizzazione Mondiale della Sanità è un obiettivo ambizioso. L’offerta di screening gratuito per l’infezione da HCV è un importante traguardo che richiede un proficuo coordinamento Stato-Regioni e un’efficace organizzazione regionale che garantisca un percorso interdisciplinare tra medicina del territorio e specialistica. Un programma di comunicazione per la sensibilizzazione delle popolazioni target e degli operatori sanitari è la chiave principale del successo. L'implementazione dello screening proattivo (come definito dalla Legge Milleproroghe) è il primo passo nella realizzazione dell'intero screening (tutta la coorte di nascita tra 1948-1988) ritenuta la strategia più costo-efficace necessaria per raggiungere in Italia gli obiettivi di eliminazione dell'HCV entro il 2030.

L’Azienda Gilead ha sviluppato un antivirale per il trattamento dell’infezione cronica da HCV: il Sofosbuvir GS-7977. L’ISMETT di Palermo ha avviato nel 2014 l’utilizzo per i propri pazienti.
