Sociodemographic Factors and Clinical Conditions Associated to Hospitalization in Influenza A (H1N1) 2009 Virus Infected Patients in Spain, 2009–2010

2012

The emergence and pandemic spread of a new strain of influenza A (H1N1) virus in 2009 resulted in a serious alarm in clinical and public health services all over the world. One distinguishing feature of this new influenza pandemic was the different profile of hospitalized patients compared to those from traditional seasonal influenza infections. Our goal was to analyze sociodemographic and clinical factors associated to hospitalization following infection by influenza A(H1N1) virus. We report the results of a Spanish nationwide study with laboratory confirmed infection by the new pandemic virus in a case-control design based on hospitalized patients. The main risk factors for hospitalizatio…

The characteristics of different diagnostic tests in adult mild asthmatic patients: Comparison with patients with asthma-like symptoms by gastro-oeso…

2007

SummaryBackgroundDiagnosing asthma cannot be always easy. It is important to consider the validity of the diagnostic tests, and/or how much more commonly they are positive in patients with asthma compared to healthy subjects and, particularly, to patients with asthma-like symptoms.ObjectiveTo evaluate the validity of diagnostic tests for asthma, in terms of sensitivity, specificity, positive and negative predictive values, in patients with bronchial asthma compared to patients affected by gastro-oesophageal reflux disease (GERD) with asthma-like symptoms, and healthy control subjects without asthma and gastro-oesophageal reflux (GER).DesignSingle-center, cross-sectional, observational study…

Prognostic Impact of Hyponatremia and Hypernatremia in COVID-19 Pneumonia. A HOPE-COVID-19 (Health Outcome Predictive Evaluation for COVID-19) Regist…

2020

Dysnatremia is associated with increased mortality in patients with community-acquired pneumonia. SARS-COV2 (Severe-acute-respiratory syndrome caused by Coronavirus-type 2) pneumonia can be fatal. The aim of this study was to ascertain whether admittance dysnatremia is associated with mortality, sepsis, or intensive therapy (IT) in patients hospitalized with SARS-COV2 pneumonia. This is a retrospective study of the HOPE-COVID-19 registry, with data collected from January 1th through April 31th, 2020. We selected all hospitalized adult patients with RT-PCR-confirmed SARS-COV2 pneumonia and a registered admission serum sodium level (SNa). Patients were classified as hyponatremic (SNa <…

Pain in patients living in Norwegian nursing homes

2008

The aims of this study were to describe the pain and use of pain medication in nursing home patients and examine which variables that were associated with pain. Inpatients ( n = 307) older than 64 years from nursing homes were included. Pain was measured with a 4-point verbal rating scale in the self-reported group (SRG) and Doloplus-2 in the proxy-rated group (PRG). The mean age was 86 years (SD, 7), and more than two-thirds were female. A total of 128 (60%) patients were able to self-report their pain. Approximately 50% of the SRG reported ‘pain now’, and of these, nearly 50% reported moderate or severe pain intensity. Better cognitive function was associated with higher pain and receivi…

Association of adiponectin with adverse outcome in coronary artery disease patients: results from the AtheroGene study

2008

In primary prevention, the adipocytokine adiponectin seems to be protective against diabetes mellitus and cardiovascular disease. Data in patients with manifest coronary artery disease (CAD) are scant stimulating the investigation of the association of adiponectin concentrations and cardiovascular outcome in a prospective CAD cohort. In 1890 consecutive patients with documented CAD [1130 with stable angina (SAP) and 760 with acute coronary syndrome (ACS)] baseline concentrations of adiponectin were measured by enzyme-linked immuno assay. During a median follow-up of 2.5 years cardiovascular events were registered (cardiovascular deaths 70; non-fatal myocardial infarction 46). Baseline adipon…

Hyperuricemia protects against low bone mineral density, osteoporosis and fractures: a systematic review and meta-analysis

2016

Background: Serum uric acid (SUA) accounts for about 50% of extracellular antioxidant activity, suggesting that hyperuricemia may have a protective role in diseases characterized by high levels of oxidative stress, such as osteoporosis. We aimed to meta-analyse data regarding bone mineral density (BMD), osteoporosis and fractures in people with higher SUA vs. lower SUA concentrations. Materials and methods: Two investigators conducted a literature search using PubMed and Scopus, without language restrictions. Standardized mean differences (SMDs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) were used for BMD; risk ratios (RRs) and adjusted odds ratios (ORs) for cross-sectional data. Most possible adju…

Oral health and reduction in respiratory capacity in a cohort of community-dwelling elderly people: a population-based 5-year follow-up study.

2004

Objectives:  Several anaerobic bacteria originating in periodontal pockets have been isolated from infected lungs and pharyngeal microflora. Increased bacterial load in lungs is known to be a risk factor for decline in forced expiratory volume during the first second. The aim was to evaluate both cross-sectionally and longitudinally the association between oral health status and forced expiratory volume during the first second (FEV1) in older residents of the city of Jyvaskyla, Finland. Design:  Cross-sectional and prospective cohort study over a 5-year follow-up. Setting:  Research laboratory of the University of Jyvaskyla. Participants:  In 1990 dental status and FEV1 were examined in 203…

Immuno-inflammatory predictors of stroke at follow-up in patients with chronic non-valvular atrial fibrillation (NVAF).

2009

Accumulating evidence suggests that inflammation plays an important role in the acute phase of ischemic stroke. CD40 L is a well recognized atherosclerotic inflammatory marker, whereas recent evidence suggests a pro-inflammatory role of Fetuin-A. To analyze the role of an inflammatory marker such as CD40 L and of a candidate pro-inflammatory marker such as Fetuin-A in acute stroke we evaluated their serum levels in subjects with acute ischemic stroke and their possible association with other laboratory and clinical variables. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We enrolled 107 consecutive patients with a diagnosis of acute ischemic stroke admitted to the Internal Medicine Department at the University of…

Prognosis of silent atrial fibrillation after acute myocardial infarction at 1-year follow-up

2014

Silent atrial fibrillation (AF), assessed by continuous ECG monitoring (CEM), has recently been shown to be common in acute myocardial infarction (AMI), and associated with higher hospital mortality. However, the long-term prognosis is still unknown. We aimed to assess 1-year prognosis in patients experiencing silent AF in AMI.All consecutive patients with AMI who were prospectively analysed by CEM during the first 48 h after admission and who survived at hospital discharge were included. Silent AF was defined as asymptomatic episodes lasting at least 30 s. Patients were followed up at 1 year for cardiovascular (CV) outcomes.Among the 737 patients analysed, 106 (14%) developed silent AF and…

Urokinase-plasminogen-activator receptor expression in disseminated tumour cells in the bone marrow and peripheral blood of patients with clinically …

2009

OBJECTIVE To evaluate the expression of urokinase-plasminogen-activator receptor (uPA-R) in disseminated tumour cells (DTC) in bone marrow (BM) and peripheral blood (PB) of patients with clinically localized prostate cancer before radical prostatectomy (RP), and to assess the associations with pathological variables and prognosis. PATIENTS AND METHODS In all, 52 patients (47 with clinically localized cancer and five with benign prostatic hyperplasia, BPH, as controls) were prospectively enrolled. BM and PB samples were drawn before surgery. DTC were enriched using a commercial system, cytokeratin (CK) 8/18 was used to detect DTC, and uPA-R expression was detected by dual-immunostaining of t…
