Abstract Background Methyl methacrylate (MMA) has been reported to cause histopathological changes in rodent nasal epithelium after inhalation challenges. Data in humans are lacking. Methods In this in vitro design 22 primary cell cultures taken from inferior turbinate tissue of healthy individuals were exposed to MMA concentrations of 50 ppm (German MAK-value) and 200 ppm. mRNA expression and cytokine release of inflammatory mediators were quantified after 4 h and after 24 h. Sponges are considered the oldest living animal group and provide important insights into the earliest evolutionary processes in the Metazoa. This paper reviews the evidence that sponge stem cells have essential roles in cellular specialization, embryogenesis and Bauplan formation. Data indicate that sponge archaeocytes not only represent germ cells but also totipotent stem cells. Marker genes have been identified which are expressed in totipotent stem cells and gemmule cells. Furthermore, genes are described for the three main cell lineages in sponge, which share a common origin from archaeocytes and result in the differentiation of skeletal, epithelial, and contractile cells.

This cytokine binds two distinct receptor complexes: type I OSM receptor which is also a functional receptor for leukemia inhibitory factor (LIF), and type II OSM-specific receptor. The role of these two distinct receptors in mediating the response of individual cell types to OSM has not been delineated. In contrast to LIF, OSM induces synthesis of α1-antichymotrypsin and α1-antiproteinase inhibitor in lung-derived epithelial cells.
