Mr-Proadm Elevation Upon Icu Admission Predicts the Outcome of Septic Patients and is Correlated with Upcoming Fluid Overload.
2017
IF 3.113; International audience; Background: Among septic patients admitted to the intensive care unit (ICU), early recognition of those with the highest risk of death is of paramount importance. We evaluated the prognostic value of Procalcitonin (PCT), mid regional-proadrenomedullin (MR-proADM), copeptine and CT-proendothelin 1 (CT-ProET 1) concentrations. Methods: This was a prospective cohort study, which included 173 septic patient admitted to one ICU. Blood samples for biomarker measure-ments were obtained upon admission and on day 5. The predictive value of each biomarker regarding the risk of death at day 28 was assessed. The fluid balance was evaluated from admission to day 5. Resu…
Procalcitonin and community-acquired pneumonia (CAP) in children
2015
The role of procalcitonin (PCT) as a biomarker for sepsis in adults is well documented, while its role in infections affecting neonatal children remains controversial. Among these infections, Community-Acquired pneumonia (CAP) has been studied extensively, because it's the second cause of death in children in developing countries, and one of the most frequent causes of hospitalization in industrialized countries. The PubMed database and the Cochrane Library were used to search for the following keywords: CAP, procalcitonin, and children. Thirteen articles were studied to determine the role of PCT in CAP management, specifically its usefulness for distinguishing pneumococcal infections from …
Mineralization of SaOS-2 cells on enzymatically (silicatein) modified bioactive osteoblast-stimulating surfaces.
2005
There is a demand for novel bioactive supports in surgery, orthopedics, and tissue engineering. The availability of recombinant silica-synthesizing enzyme (silicatein) opens new possibilities for the synthesis of silica-containing bioactive surfaces under ambient conditions that do not damage biomolecules like proteins. Here it is shown that growth of human osteosarcoma SaOS-2 cells on cluster plates precoated with Type 1 collagen is not affected by additional coating of the plates with the recombinant silicatein and incubation with its enzymatic substrate, tetraethoxysilane (TEOS). However, the enzymatic modification of the plates by biosilica deposition on the protein-coated surface cause…
Abstract 4246: Associations of Epstein-Barr virus (EBV)-positive gastric cancer with circulating mediators of inflammation and immune response
2017
Abstract Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) positivity defines one of four major molecular types of gastric cancer in The Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA). However, viral status is not routinely determined in clinical practice and tumor samples are not generally collected in epidemiologic research. Histologically, EBV-positive gastric cancer is characterized by prominent inflammatory infiltrate. In molecular analyses from TCGA, EBV-positive gastric cancer had significantly higher expression of several chemokines, chemokine receptors and programmed death-ligand 1 (PD-L1) as compared to other molecular types combined. We hypothesized that EBV tumor status may also be reflected in profiles of circulating chem…
From a Better Understanding of the Mechanisms of Action of Histone Deacetylases Inhibitors to the Progress of the Treatment of Malignant Lymphomas an…
2017
Background Notable progress has been made in chemo- and immunotherapy of B-cell lymphomas, but less in the treatment of T-cell lymphomas. Objective Histone deacetylases inhibitors are a potentially useful therapeutic mean, as an epigenetic dysregulation is present in lymphomas, and especially in T-cell types. We aimed to study the progress made in this area. Method A mini-review was achieved using the articles published in PubMed in the last two years and the new patents made in this field. Results Histone deacetylases inhibitors are involved in the derepression of tumor suppressor genes through a histone deacetylase-mediated transcriptional process. Their inhibition is followed by cell cyc…
Risk of classical Kaposi sarcoma by plasma levels of Epstein-Barr virus antibodies, sCD26, sCD23 and sCD30
2010
Abstract Background To clarify the immunological alterations leading to classical Kaposi sarcoma (cKS) among people infected with KS-associated herpesvirus (KSHV). Methods In a population-based study of 119 cKS cases, 105 KSHV-seropositive controls, and 155 KSHV-seronegative controls, we quantified plasma soluble cluster of differentiation (sCD) levels and antibodies against Epstein-Barr virus nuclear antigen-1 (anti-EBNA-1) and viral capsid antigen (anti-VCA). Differences between groups in prevalence of low-tertile anti-EBNA-1 and high-tertile anti-VCA were compared by logistic regression. Continuous levels between groups and by presence of cKS co-factors among controls were compared by li…
Cathepsin D expression levels in nongynecological solid tumors: clinical and therapeutic implications.
2004
Cathepsin D is a lysosomal acid proteinase which is involved in the malignant progression of breast cancer and other gynecological tumors. Clinical investigations have shown that in breast cancer patients cathepsin D overexpression was significantly correlated with a shorter free-time disease and overall survival, whereas in patients with ovarian or endometrial cancer this phenomenon was associated with tumor aggressiveness and a degree of chemoresistance to various antitumor drugs such as anthracyclines, cis-platinum and vinca alkaloids. Therefore, a lot of research has been undertaken to evaluate the role and the prognostic value of cathepsin D also in other solid neoplasms. However, conf…
Partial restoration of pre-transformation levels of lysyl oxidase and transin mRNAs in phenotypic ras revertants.
1995
Neoplastic transformation mediated by ras oncogenes is associated with deregulated expression of genes encoding, for example, various proteases, lysyl oxidase, and smooth-muscle α-actin. To define the role of these genes in the initiation or maintenance of the ras-transformed state, we compared their steady-state mRNA levels in two different sets of preneoplastic fibroblast lines, ras-transformed clones, and phenotypic revertants derived from them. Compared with the preneoplastic fibroblasts, the ras-transformed derivatives exhibited elevated levels of cathepsin L (major excreted protein), transin (stromelysin I, matrix metalloproteinase–3), and collagenase I (matrix metalloproteinase–1) mR…
Abstract 2370: Elevated levels of anti-Epstein Barr virus (EBV) antibodies in EBV-associated gastric carcinoma
2020
Abstract Background: Almost 10% of gastric carcinomas contain Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) DNA, which is not found in other gastrointestinal tract cancers. EBV-positive tumors have distinct clinico-epidemiologic features and are molecularly characterized by recurrent PIK3CA and absent TP53 mutations, JAK2 and PD-L1/L2 amplifications, and extreme DNA hypermethylation. Identification of the gastric cancer-specific antibody response to this common infection may elucidate its contribution to carcinogenesis and provide a non-invasive method to detect EBV-positive gastric tumors. Methods: Plasma samples from Latvian patients with EBV-positive (n=28) and -negative (n=34) gastric cancer were immune-pro…
Histone deacetylase inhibitors: apoptotic effects and clinical implications (Review).
2008
It has been shown that epigenetic modifications play an important role in tumorigenesis. Thus, affecting epigenetic tumorigenic alterations can represent a promising strategy for anticancer targeted therapy. Among the key chromatin modifying enzymes which influence gene expression, histone acetyltransferases (HATs) and histone deacetylases (HDACs) have recently attracted interest because of their impact on tumor development and progression. Increased expression of HDACs and disrupted activities of HATs have been found in several tumor types, with a consequent hypoacetylated state of chromatin that can be strictly correlated with low expression of either tumor suppressor or pro-apoptotic gen…
