Effectiveness of individualized training based on force-velocity profiling on physical function in older men.

The study aimed to investigate the effectiveness of an individualized power training program based on force–velocity (FV) profiling on physical function, muscle morphology, and neuromuscular adaptations in older men. Forty-nine healthy men (68 ± 5 years) completed a 10-week training period to enhance muscular power. They were randomized to either a generic power training group (GPT) or an individualized power training group (IPT). Unlike generic training, individualized training was based on low- or high-resistance exercises, from an initial force–velocity profile. Benign familial infantile epilepsy associated with KCNQ3 mutation: a rare occurrence or an underestimated event?

Abstract Benign familial infantile epilepsy (BFIE) is the most genetically heterogeneous phenotype among early-onset familial infantile epilepsies. It has an autosomal dominant inheritance pattern with incomplete penetrance. Although PRRT2 is the most mutated gene detected in families with BFIE, other mutations in KCNQ2, SCN2A, and GABRA6 genes have also been described. Benign familial neonatal epilepsy (BFNE) is caused, in about 5% of families, by mutations in the KCNQ3 gene encoding voltage-gated potassium channel subunits. Usually, newborns with BFNE show a normal neurological outcome, but recently, refractory seizures and/or developmental disability have been reported suggesting phenotype variability associated with KCNQ3-related BFNE. Concomitant inflammatory pseudotumor of the liver and spleen.

We report the case of a 53-year-old man with inflammatory pseudotumor (IPT) of the liver and spleen. This concomitant association has rarely been reported. The patient presented with a hypoechoic mass in the liver and a clinical picture of recurrent sepsis; hematochemical exams and imaging data were nonspecific. Antibiotic therapy improved the clinical course, but did not resolve it definitively. After 50 days of therapy, as the hepatic mass decreased a similar lesion appeared in the spleen. The final diagnosis was made on splenectomy and an intra-operative biopsy of the residual liver lesion. VAMP2 encodes the vesicular SNARE protein VAMP2 (also called synaptobrevin-2). Together with its partners syntaxin-1A and synaptosomal-associated protein 25 (SNAP25), VAMP2 mediates fusion of synaptic vesicles to release neurotransmitters. Cathepsin C gene: First compound heterozygous patient with Papillon-Lefèvre syndrome and a novel symptomless mutation.

Papillon-Lefevre syndrome (PLS) has recently been shown to be caused by mutations in the cathepsin C gene resulting in periodontal disease and palmoplantar keratosis. Thirteen different homozygous mutations have been characterised in PLS patients of different ethnic origin. In the present paper, a PLS patient is described who carries two novel mutations (706G>T and 872G>A) in the paternal and maternal chromosomes, respectively. Background In patients with septic shock, the skin is often chosen for the evaluation of peripheral perfusion and oxygenation. Changes in skin microcirculatory vessel oxygen saturation and relative hemoglobin concentration can be described using a mottling score or captured with hyperspectral imaging. However, the effectiveness of the mottling score in assessing microcirculation remains to be shown.
