Can fathers' leave take-up dismantle gendered parental responsibilities? Evidence from Finland

2022

Objective: This article reports on the associations of fathers' leave take-up with parents' care responsibilities when their child is around four years old. Background: In families with small children women continue to do more parental care work than men. Several studies, however, have suggested that fathers who take up parental leave also take more responsibility for childcare. Method: We applied logistic regression analysis to Finnish survey data collected in 2019 from the mothers and fathers of four-year-old children to find out whether father’s take-up and length of leave is related to fathers taking equal or more responsibility for different dimensions of parental responsibilities, inc…

Negotiating parenting practices: the arguments and justifications of Finnish couples

2021

This article explores Finnish different-sex couples’ (n = 12) negotiations on their parental division of labour. Theoretically, the article is based on the literature on gendered parenting practices and relational negotiations. Our discourse analysis reveals how the couples produced ‘togetherness’ and ‘our family’ by representing their care practices as agreements, irrespective of whether the care was described as equally shared or distinctly gendered. Disagreements reflecting more individualistic tones, and mainly resulting from the mothers’ sense of unfairness, were especially foregrounded when the distribution of household duties was discussed. The analysis also revealed how men cited in…

Mujeres y liderazgo político en la Península Ibérica y Italia

2022

This article analyzes the image that the media offer about women who currently practice politics as a profession, focusing the field of study on Portugal, Spain and Italy. The work´s starting point is the inequality of treatment by sex, patented in different studies, together with a contextualization about the women´s participation women from those countries in political life throughout history, which in turn is framed in a more generic view of women and politics in Europe. It analyzes media´ strategies in relation to gender roles, biases and underlying stereotypes, as well as the use of language as a tool for constructing discourse around these issues. The conclusions are the survival of i…

Shape optimization in contact problems : Approximation and numerical realization

1987

The optímal shape design of a two-dimensíonal elastic body on rigid foundatíon is analyzed. The relation between the continuous problem and the díscrete problem achieved by FEM is presented. A numerícal realization together wíth the sensítivity analysís is given. Several numerical examples to illustrate the practícal use of the methods are presented. peerReviewed

Competition, Gender Equality, and Doping in Sports in the Red Queen Effect Perspective

2022

The nature of sports is characterized by a strong competitive component that generates inequalities among athletes at different levels, specifically in relation to gender, technology, and doping. These inequalities can be represented according to the Red Queen effect perspective, which has been previously hypothesized in other competitive environments (evolutionary biology and economics, for instance). The Red Queen effect considers each competitive environment to require a constant effort to maintain a position of competitive advantage in order reach the best result possible. Therefore, the aim of the current paper is to provide an innovative perspective for the understanding of competitio…

Deep and Proximate Determinants of the World Income Distribution

2019

This paper studies the deep and proximate determinants of the evolution of the cross-country distribution of GDP per worker in the period 1960–2008 by a novel method based on an information criterion. We find that countries of our sample follow three distinctive growth regimes identified by two deep determinants, namely life expectancy at birth in 1960 and the share of Catholics in 1965, and that each regime is characterized by non-linearities. Growth regimes appear to be the main cause of the increased inequality and polarization, while technological catch-up, proxied by the initial level of GDP per worker, acts in the opposite direction. Finally, human capital marginally reduces polarizat…

Monetary policy and inequality from an inclusive and social banking perspective

2021

This doctoral thesis empirically evaluates the effects of monetary policy on income and wealth inequality in two of the main monetary areas of the world: the Eurozone and the United States. Moreover, in the case of the Eurozone, the interaction between the dynamics of income inequality and banking activity is evaluated, distinguishing between banking structures. Specifically, I empirically assess whether cooperative banks have a differential impact on the evolution of inequality with respect to other banking structures such as commercial banks or savings banks. Different macroeconometric (SVAR, Proxy SVAR) and microeconometric (simulations and estimations with panel data) methodologies have…

On the Porosity of Free Boundaries in Degenerate Variational Inequalities

2000

Abstract In this note we consider a certain degenerate variational problem with constraint identically zero. The exact growth of the solution near the free boundary is established. A consequence of this is that the free boundary is porous and therefore its Hausdorff dimension is less than N and hence it is of Lebesgue measure zero.
