Steady-state radiation heat transfer problem

1996

In Section 8.2, we shall see that the steady-state radiative heat transfer problem can be transformed to minimization of a smooth nonquadratic functional J over a convex and closed subset of a Banach space V. To this end we firstly shortly recall some basic definitions concerning differentiability of J, because these sometimes differ in the literature.

This article is about the issues of self-assessment of inequalities in standards of living in rural areas in Poland. The goal of the research is to identify the differentiation of subjective assessments of the standard of living made by rural households. Subjective feelings of the surveyed households were compared with selected objective characteristics of their material situation. The most representative indicator of the households’ financial situation there was an assumed level of consumer spending. A comparative analysis of the self assessment was conducted, the consumer spending and the selected characteristics of households belonging to various socio-economic groups. The econometric an…

COVID-19, Gender Housework Division and Municipality Size in Spain

2022

The COVID-19 health crisis brought with it an increase in the workload on family members due to the restriction of services and the suspension of formal and informal care networks. Numerous studies have analyzed how home confinement have affected different gender gaps, including the gender gap related to chores within the home. This research aims to contribute to the existing literature from the perspective of gender geography by introducing the variable municipality size in the analyses. Our research in the case of Spain shows the COVID-19 health crisis to have had a significant impact on gender gaps, albeit to varying degrees. Women, especially those living in small municipalities, experi…

Input-output finite-time stability of positive switched linear systems with state delays

2013

This paper is concerned with the problem of input-output finite-time stability (IO-FTS) for a class of discrete-time positive switched systems with time-varying delays. Two sufficient conditions for the existence of IO-FTS of such systems with respect to two different input signals are presented, respectively. All the results obtained are formulated in a set of linear inequalities. Two numerical examples are given to illustrate the effectiveness of the proposed results.

Fast and Accurate Bounds on Linear Programs

2009

We present an algorithm that certifies the feasibility of a linear program while using rational arithmetic as little as possible. Our approach relies on computing a feasible solution of the linear program that is as far as possible from satisfying an inequality at equality. To realize such an approach, we have to detect the set of inequalities that can only be satisfied at equality. Compared to previous approaches for this problem our algorithm has a much higher rate of success.

Discrete-time static output-feedback semi-decentralized H<inf>∞</inf> controller design: An application to structural vibratio…

2012

In this work, we present a new and effective method to design discrete-time static output-feedback H ∞ controllers. This new method, based on a Linear Matrix Inequality (LMI) formulation, introduces a suitable transformation of the LMI variables that allows to obtain an explicit expression for the output-feedback gain matrix. Moreover, for problems involving a set of subsystems with information exchange constraints, a convenient structure on the LMI variables can be imposed in order to design semi-decentralized controllers, where the corresponding output-feedback gain matrix has a prescribed zero-nonzero structure. To illustrate the proposed methodology, discrete-time static velocity-feedba…

Principio di uguaglianza ed equità fiscale

2021

The work deals with the principle of equality studied and supported by the Honorable Nilde Iotti, therefore with art. 3 of the Constitution, examining the principle of equality in the tax field, together with the connected princ…

The Slave Coasts. Transnational Sexual Exploitation from Nigeria to Italy. From human trafficking to human rights

2019

This research intends to open a global debate on the current strong link between migration and prostitution on the basis of the reality observed in Palermo in the timespan 2015-2017. The main three elements emerging from the analysis are criminality, poverty and exploitation. As data suggests, Italy is the favorite destination of the Nigerian sexual exploitation market. In particular, Sicily plays a major role in the sexual exploitation ring involving Nigerian migrants, besides headquartering the Italian as well the Nigerian mafia. The agreement between Cosa Nostra (Sicilian Mafia) and the two organizations known as Black Axe and Eye (Nigerian mafia) represents the starting point for sexual…

Liberty and Equality as the Morality of the Rule of Law

2022

After presenting a schematic map of the concepts at stake (liberty, equality) in so far as they are relevant for the general topic (their relationship with rule of law – from now on RoL), and after examining different forms of their relationships, this entry focuses on the specificity of the relationship between liberty and equality in the legal context. The title suggests that a combination of liberty and equality is the very basis of every legal system inspired by RoL. This circumstance requires the identification of different versions of the idea of RoL.
