Stochastic response determination of nonlinear oscillators with fractional derivatives elements via the Wiener path integral

2014

A novel approximate analytical technique for determining the non-stationary response probability density function (PDF) of randomly excited linear and nonlinear oscillators endowed with fractional derivatives elements is developed. Specifically, the concept of the Wiener path integral in conjunction with a variational formulation is utilized to derive an approximate closed form solution for the system response non-stationary PDF. Notably, the determination of the non-stationary response PDF is accomplished without the need to advance the solution in short time steps as it is required by the existing alternative numerical path integral solution schemes which rely on a discrete version of the…

A New Time Dependent Model Based on Level Set Motion for Nonlinear Deblurring and Noise Removal

1999

In this paper we summarize the main features of a new time dependent model to approximate the solution to the nonlinear total variation optimization problem for deblurring and noise removal introduced by Rudin, Osher and Fatemi. Our model is based on level set motion whose steady state is quickly reached by means of an explicit procedure based on an ENO Hamilton-Jacobi version of Roe's scheme. We show numerical evidence of the speed, resolution and stability of this simple explicit procedure in two representative 1D and 2D numerical examples.

Mapping evapotranspiration on vineyards: A comparison between Penman-Monteith and energy balance approaches for operational purposes

2012

Estimation of evapotranspiration (ET) in Sicilian vineyard is an emerging issue since these agricultural systems are more and more converted from rainfed to irrigated conditions, with significant impacts on the management of the scarce water resources of the region. The choice of the most appropriate methodology for assessing water use in these systems is still an issue of debating, due to the complexity of canopy and root systems and for their high spatial fragmentation. In vineyards, quality and quantity of the final product are dependent on the controlled stress conditions to be set trough irrigation. This paper reports an application of the well-known Penman-Monteith approach, applied i…

The Large Observatory for X-ray Timing (LOFT)

2012

High-time-resolution X-ray observations of compact objects provide direct access to strong-field gravity, to the equation of state of ultra-dense matter and to black hole masses and spins. A 10 m^2-class instrument in combination with good spectral resolution is required to exploit the relevant diagnostics and answer two of the fundamental questions of the European Space Agency (ESA) Cosmic Vision Theme "Matter under extreme conditions", namely: does matter orbiting close to the event horizon follow the predictions of general relativity? What is the equation of state of matter in neutron stars? The Large Observatory For X-ray Timing (LOFT), selected by ESA as one of the four Cosmic Vision M…

Universal natural shapes: From unifying shape description to simple methods for shape analysis and boundary value problems

2012

Gielis curves and surfaces can describe a wide range of natural shapes and they have been used in various studies in biology and physics as descriptive tool. This has stimulated the generalization of widely used computational methods. Here we show that proper normalization of the Levenberg-Marquardt algorithm allows for efficient and robust reconstruction of Gielis curves, including self-intersecting and asymmetric curves, without increasing the overall complexity of the algorithm. Then, we show how complex curves of k-type can be constructed and how solutions to the Dirichlet problem for the Laplace equation on these complex domains can be derived using a semi-Fourier method. In all three …

The force interpretation of evolutionary theory: scope and limits

2016

On new ways of group methods for reduction of evolution-type equations

2005

AbstractNew exact solutions of the evolution-type equations are constructed by means of a non-point (contact) symmetries. Also we analyzed the discrete symmetries of Maxwell equations in vacuum and decoupled ones to the four independent equations that can be solved independently.

Une quête d'exactitude : machines, algèbre et géométrie pour la construction traditionnelle des équations différentielles

2015

In La Géométrie, Descartes proposed a “balance” between geometric constructions and symbolic manipulation with the introduction of suitable ideal machines. In particular, Cartesian tools were polynomial algebra (analysis) and a class of diagrammatic constructions (synthesis). This setting provided a classification of curves, according to which only the algebraic ones were considered “purely geometrical.” This limit was overcome with a general method by Newton and Leibniz introducing the infinity in the analytical part, whereas the synthetic perspective gradually lost importance with respect to the analytical one—geometry became a mean of visualization, no longer of construction. Descartes’s…

Determination of transport and kinetic properties in self-propagating high-temperature synthesis

2007

International audience; Exothermic reactions in solid powders are analyzed using the usual macroscopic modeling based on the heat transfer equation coupled to an Arrhenius type of dynamics. This problem have important applications in the synthesis of intermetallics and ceramic materials which occur when a high temperature reaction wave propagates throughout the system. Understanding the mechanism of such processes are thus crucial in mastering real laboratory experiments. We first analyze the model, both theoretically and numerically, for a set of representative parameters. We then use traditional data analyses procedures to estimate from the temperature profiles the same set of representat…
