When animals cry: The effect of adding tears to animal expressions on human judgment
2020
At a time of growing interest in and awareness about the relationships between humans and animals, it is of relevance to scientifically analyse the intrinsic nature of these interactions. Reactions to emotional tears show our extraordinary capacity for detecting micro-nuances when judging another human’s face. Regarding such behaviour, previous studies carried out in our laboratory have pointed to an adaptive function of emotional tears: i.e. their inhibitory influence on perceived aggressiveness. In the present work we aimed to further explore that hypothesis by extending our investigation from humans to animals, using pictures of five different animal faces (cat, dog, horse, chimpanzee, h…
A comparative study of the sperm nuclear morphometry in cattle, goat, sheep, and pigs using a new computer-assisted method (CASMA-F)
2012
This study was designed to compare the sperm nuclear morphometry of four species of domestic artiodactyls (cattle, sheep, goats, and pigs), using the newly developed automatic computer-assisted sperm morphometry analysis-F. The study was divided into two experiments. In the first experiment, samples from 20 males from each species were collected, diluted, and divided into four sample aliquots. The first was labeled directly with Hoechst 33342, and the others were processed as smears. Between smears, one group was directly labeled with Hoechst after air drying, and the other was fixed either with glutaraldehyde (GLUT), or with methanol, and afterward labeled with Hoechst. Digital images of t…
Study of nuclear and acrosomal sperm morphometry in ram using a computer-assisted sperm morphometry analysis fluorescence (CASMA-F) method.
2014
The aim of this study was to develop a new method that allows morphometric assessment of the sperm nucleus and acrosome in the ram using fluorescence microscopy and free software. The study was divided into three experiments. In the first experiment, semen smears from 20 ejaculates were fixed and labeled with a propidium iodide-pisum sativum agglutinin (PI/PSA) combination. Digital images of the sperm nucleus, acrosome, and whole sperm head were captured and analyzed using the ImageJ program. The computer-assisted sperm morphometry analysis fluorescence (CASMA-F) method used allowed the differentiation, capture, and morphometric analysis of most sperm nuclei, acrosomes, and whole heads with…
Effect of solid storage at 15 degrees C on the subsequent motility and fertility of rabbit semen.
2005
We conducted two studies to improve preservation of rabbit semen. The objective of the first study was determine whether a glucose- and fructose-based extender with two different amounts of gelatin would solidify at 15 degrees C, and to evaluate the influence of gelatin supplementation on sperm motility parameters after storing semen up to 10 days at 15 degrees C. The fertility of rabbit semen diluted in the best gelatin-supplemented extender established in Study 1 and stored for up to 5 days was evaluated in the second study. In Study 1, semen was collected with an artificial vagina from 40 bucks. Each ejaculate was diluted to (80-100) x 10(6) spermatozoa/mL (1:3, semen/extender) at 37 deg…
Effect of dietary supplementation with a mixture of Vitamins C and E on fertilization of tertiary butyl hydroperoxide-treated oocytes and parthenogen…
2002
The present study aims to analyze the effect of dietary supplementation with a mixture of Vitamins C and E on fertilization and later development of tertiary butyl hydroperoxide (tBH)-treated mouse oocytes and on parthenogenetic activation of freshly ovulated mouse oocytes. We fed hybrid mice a standard diet supplemented or not supplemented with Vitamins C and E from the first day of weaning until the age of 12 weeks. We noted no significant effect of diet on fertilization rate, percentage of total and hatching blastocysts, total number of cells, mitotic index and percentage of apoptotic nuclei at 120 h post-insemination of oocytes incubated for 15 min in the presence of 0, 1, 5 and 10 micr…
The impact of ovarian stimulation on the expression of candidate reprogramming genes in mouse preimplantation embryos.
2012
Ovarian stimulation with gonadotrophins is an integral part of assisted reproductive technologies in human subfertility/infertility treatment. Recent findings have associated ovarian stimulation with the increased incidence of imprinting disorders in humans as well as defects in genome-wide methylation reprogramming and, in particular, imprinting in mice. Here, we present the first study that determined the impact of ovarian stimulation on the expression of developmentally important reprogramming genes <i>(Apex1, Lig1, Lig3, Mbd2, Mbd3, Mbd4, </i>and<i> Polb)</i> in single early mouse morula embryos (16-cell stage). Using absolute quantification of mRNA by quantitati…
Neuromodulation of the superior hypogastric plexus: a new option to treat bladder atonia secondary to radical pelvic surgery?
2009
Abstract Background The aim of this study is to report on the impact of neuromodulation to the superior hypogastric plexus in patients with bladder atonia secondary to pelvic surgery. Methods In 4 consecutive patients with bladder atonia secondary to pelvic surgery, we performed a laparoscopic implantation of a neurostimulator—LION procedure—to the entire superior hypogastric plexus. Results Of the 4 reported patients, 3 are able to partially void or empty their bladder. Conclusions If the presented results could be obtained in further patients and maintained in long-term follow-up, the LION procedure to the superior hypogastric plexus could change the management of bladder function in pati…
Plasmid-mediated QnrS2 determinant from a clinical Aeromonas veronii isolate.
2008
The main objective of this study was to determine the prevalence of the Qnr determinants in clinical and environmental Aeromonas spp. A total of 52 Aeromonas sp. isolates identified by biochemical methods (5), 25 isolated from natural waters (1) and 27 isolated from clinical samples from hospitals in Valencia, Spain, were tested for quinolone resistance by the disk diffusion method (4) (nalidixic acid, 30 μg; oxolinic acid, 2 μg; flumequine, 30 μg; ciprofloxacin, 5 μg; and levofloxacin, 5 μg). Among the studied isolates, 27 showed resistance to nalidixic acid and susceptibility to ciprofloxacin, 24 isolates were susceptible to both nalidixic acid and ciprofloxacin, and only 1, the A. veroni…
Odd haemoglobins in odd-toed ungulates: Impact of selected haemoglobin characteristics of the white rhinoceros (Ceratotherium simum) on the monitorin…
2019
Background Due to the current poaching crisis in Africa, increasing numbers of white rhinoceroses (Ceratotherium simum) require opioid immobilisation for medical interventions or management procedures. Alarmingly, the results of both blood gas analysis and pulse oximetry regularly indicate severe hypoxaemia. Yet, the recovery of the animals is uneventful. Thus, neither of the techniques seems to represent the real oxygenation level. We hypothesized that unusual haemoglobin characteristics of this species interfere with the techniques developed and calibrated for the use in human patients. Methods Haemoglobin was isolated from blood samples of four adult, white rhinoceroses. Oxygen dissociat…
Emergence in 2017-2019 of novel reassortant equine-like G3 rotavirus strains in Palermo, Sicily.
2021
Rotavirus A (RVA) is a major etiologic agent of gastroenteritis in children worldwide. Hospital-based surveillance of viral gastroenteritis in paediatric population in Palermo (Italy) from 2017 onwards revealed a sharp increase in G3P[8] RVAs, accounting for 71% of all the RVAs detected in 2019. This pattern had not been observed before in Italy, with G3 RVA usually being detected at rates lower than 3%. In order to investigate this unique epidemiological pattern, the genetic diversity of G3 RVAs identified during a 16-year long surveillance (2004-2019) was explored by systematic sequencing of the VP7 and VP4 genes and by whole genome sequencing of selected G3 strains, representative of the…
