Structural and magnetic characterization of Pd nanoparticles encapsulated in apoferritin

Pd nanoparticles exhibiting permanent magnetism at room temperature have been prepared within the apoferritin cavity. Pd nanoparticles in air and under an inert atmosphere were synthesized to study the influence of the aerobic and anaerobic conditions in the final magnetic properties. The surface of nanoparticles as well as the type of crystalline phase could determine the magnetic properties. X-ray powder diffraction, including Debye-function analysis, transmission electronic microscopy, and magnetization measurements have been used for characterizing the nanoparticles.

Dispersion of magnetic susceptibility in a suspension of flexible ferromagnetic rods

Abstract The properties of suspensions of magnetosomes extracted from magnetotactic bacteria are investigated. By using dynamic light scattering and measuring the dispersion of magnetic susceptibility it is shown that sonicated samples with broken magnetosome chains have qualitatively different behavior in comparison with native samples. This is explained by the presence of flexible chains of magnetosomes in non-sonicated samples which have the qualitative features of magnetic susceptibility predicted by the model of flexible magnetic rods.

Corrosion protection of Nd–Fe–B type permanent magnets by zinc phosphate surface conversion coatings

Abstract The use of protective zinc phosphate top coatings to protect Nd–Fe–B type permanent magnets against corrosion is discussed. The progress of the phosphatisation process has been tested by simultaneous measurement of pH near surface, corrosion potential, substrate mass loss and phosphate coating mass gain. The corrosion behaviour of the magnet in phosphate solution was analyzed by the anodic polarization technique and the general resistance of the magnet to corrosion was evaluated by the Akimov drop test. Early-stage detection of surface stress corrosion cracking at the subgranular level

The strain field at the interface between an alloy and its oxide layer has been mapped using nanopatterned gauges resistant to the environment of the primary nuclear medium. It was found that oxidation has decreased the alloy ductility, thereby enabling some grain boundary opening to be detectable from 1.8 % strain. It is shown that statistics of extreme rare events of hotspots quantify the occurrence of the local opening of intergranular cracks, and thereby the ageing process.

Characterization of microscopic ferromagnetic defects in thin films using magnetic microscope based on Nitrogen-Vacancy centres

In this work we present results acquired by applying magnetic field imaging technique based on Nitrogen-Vacancy centres in diamond crystal for characterization of magnetic thin films defects. We used the constructed wide-field magnetic microscope for measurements of two kinds of magnetic defects in thin films. One family of defects under study was a result of non-optimal thin film growth conditions. The magnetic field maps of several regions of the thin films created under very similar conditions to previously published research revealed microscopic impurity islands of ferromagnetic defects, that potentially could disturb the magnetic properties of the surface. Tailoring the microstructure and mechanical properties of Ti–Al alloy using a novel electromagnetic stirring method

The effect of melt convection during the solidification of Ti45Al55 alloys was investigated in terms of microstructure evolution and the resulting mechanical properties. The samples were subjected to conventional induction melting as well as enhanced melt stirring by an external magnetic field using a specially designed floating zone arrangement. The stirred samples showed a significant improvement of plastic deformability. A strong change in the morphology from dendritic to spherical and an increased properitectic phase fraction were observed after stirring.

Electrochemical behaviour of copper-nickel alloys as immobilisation matrices for the storage of fission products in CO2-enriched synthetic groundwater

The kinetic reactions and physical properties of the layers grown on the alloy's surfaces, change versus the Ni content in the alloys and the presence of CO2 in the solution. Characterization of the ESR response of alanine dosimeters to low-energy Cu-target X-tube photons

Abstract This article describes Electron Spin Resonance (ESR) response measurements of Kodak BioMax alanine films exposed to low-energy X-rays from a Cu-target tube operating at 20 kV. Commercial alanine detectors were used to ensure maximum reproducibility of the results, while the choice of a film was due the low penetration of the soft X-rays. X-ray energy spectra and fluences were determined with an innovative digital semiconductor detector system. These data were used to quantify the irradiation of the alanine films in terms of absorbed dose to water. The alanine films were found to present a stable response, highly linear with dose. In this work, the physical and biological properties of polylactic acid (PLA) electrospun mats coated with kefiran (Kef) were evaluated.
