Coherent Conditional Previsions and Proper Scoring Rules

2012

In this paper we study the relationship between the notion of coherence for conditional prevision assessments on a family of finite conditional random quantities and the notion of admissibility with respect to bounded strictly proper scoring rules. Our work extends recent results given by the last two authors of this paper on the equivalence between coherence and admissibility for conditional probability assessments. In order to prove that admissibility implies coherence a key role is played by the notion of Bregman divergence.

Homeomorphic graph manifolds: A contribution to the μ constant problem

1999

Abstract We give a characterization, in terms of homological data in covering spaces, of those maps between (3-dimensional) graph manifolds which are homotopic to homeomorphisms. As an application we give a condition on a cobordism between graph manifolds that guarantees that they are homeomorphic. This in turn is applied to give a partial result on the μ -constant problem in (complex) dimension three.

Uniform, Sobolev extension and quasiconformal circle domains

1991

This paper contributes to the theory of uniform domains and Sobolev extension domains. We present new features of these domains and exhibit numerous relations among them. We examine two types of Sobolev extension domains, demonstrate their equivalence for bounded domains and generalize known sufficient geometric conditions for them. We observe that in the plane essentially all of these domains possess the trait that there is a quasiconformal self-homeomorphism of the extended plane which maps a given domain conformally onto a circle domain. We establish a geometric condition enjoyed by these plane domains which characterizes them among all quasicircle domains having no large and no small bo…

Tears evoke the intention to offer social support: A systematic investigation of the interpersonal effects of emotional crying across 41 countries

2021

Tearful crying is a ubiquitous and likely uniquely human phenomenon. Scholars have argued that emotional tears serve an attachment function: Tears are thought to act as a social glue by evoking social support intentions. Initial experimental studies supported this proposition across several methodologies, but these were conducted almost exclusively on participants from North America and Europe, resulting in limited generalizability. This project examined the tears-social support intentions effect and possible mediating and moderating variables in a fully pre-registered study across 7007 participants (24,886 ratings) and 41 countries spanning all populated continents. Participants were prese…

A Log-Rank Test for Equivalence of Two Survivor Functions

1993

We consider a hypothesis testing problem in which the alternative states that the vertical distance between the underlying survivor functions nowhere exceeds some prespecified bound delta0. Under the assumption of proportional hazards, this hypothesis is shown to be (logically) equivalent to the statement [beta[log(1 + epsilon), where beta denotes the regression coefficient associated with the treatment group indicator, and epsilon is a simple strictly increasing function of delta. The testing procedure proposed consists of carrying out in terms of beta (i.e., the standard Cox likelihood estimator of beta) the uniformly most powerful level alpha test for a suitable interval hypothesis about…

A Distribution-Free Two-Sample Equivalence Test Allowing for Tied Observations

1999

A new testing procedure is derived which enables to assess the equivalence of two arbitrary noncontinuous distribution functions from which unrelated samples are taken as the data to be analyzed. The equivalence region is defined to consist of all pairs (F, G) of distribution functions such that for independent X ∼F, Y ∼G the conditional probability of {X > Y} given {X ¬= Y} lies in some short interval around 1/2. The test rejects the null hypothesis of nonequivalence if and only if the standardized distance between the U-statistics estimator of P|X > Y | X ¬= Y] and the center of the equivalence interval (1/2 - e 1 , 1/2 + e 2 ) does not exceed a critical upper bound which has to be comput…

(φ, ψ)-weak contractions in intuitionistic fuzzy metric spaces

2014

The purpose of this paper is to extend the notion of (phi,psi)-weak contraction to intuitionistic fuzzy metric spaces, by using an altering distance function. We obtain common fixed point results in intuitionistic fuzzy metric spaces, which generalize several known results from the literature.

Comparative Evaluation of Community Detection Algorithms: A Topological Approach

2012

International audience; Community detection is one of the most active fields in complex networks analysis, due to its potential value in practical applications. Many works inspired by different paradigms are devoted to the development of algorithmic solutions allowing to reveal the network structure in such cohesive subgroups. Comparative studies reported in the literature usually rely on a performance measure considering the community structure as a partition (Rand Index, Normalized Mutual information, etc.). However, this type of comparison neglects the topological properties of the communities. In this article, we present a comprehensive comparative study of a representative set of commu…

Equivalence Testing With Particle Size Distribution Data: Methods and Applications in the Development of Inhalative Drugs

2017

ABSTRACTKey criteria of the quality of inhalative drugs are assessed in experiments generating so-called particle size distributions as data. Many experiments of that kind are carried out to demonstrate that necessary modifications to whatever part of the manufacturing process do not substantially change basic characteristics of an inhalable drug product. The equivalence testing procedures we derive for that purpose rely on different models accommodating the specific structure of such data and on different ways of specifying the region of nonrelevant differences. For each hypotheses formulation, three different tests are derived (two parametric and one asymptotically distribution-free proce…

Some links between conditional and coregionalized multivariate Gaussian Markov random fields

2020

Abstract Multivariate disease mapping models are attracting considerable attention. Many modeling proposals have been made in this area, which could be grouped into three large sets: coregionalization, multivariate conditional and univariate conditional models. In this work we establish some links between these three groups of proposals. Specifically, we explore the equivalence between the two conditional approaches and show that an important class of coregionalization models can be seen as a large subclass of the conditional approaches. Additionally, we propose an extension to the current set of coregionalization models with some new unexplored proposals. This extension is able to reproduc…
