IS HYPOXIA-INDUCIBLE FACTOR (HIF-1) ALPHA INVOLVED IN TARAVANA SYNDROME?
2021
Breath holding diving (BH) is a discipline practiced by an increasing number of people. BH-divers are exposed to extreme environmental conditions such as: increased hyperbaric pressure and low temperature that caused change in arterial blood gases (1-2) and induced an human diving response which includes bradycardia, reduced cardiac output, increased arterial blood pressure and peripheral vasoconstriction (3). Some of these adaptations are still not fully understood, so we decided to investigate some biomarkers that should be involved in this disorders starting to analyse Hypoxia-inducible factor 1 alpha (HIF-1α). We enrolled in our study 31 healthy free divers from different part of Sicily…
The impact of Information Technology on the identification of species and archiviation of taxonomic and floristic data.
2007
In plant taxonomy, classification aims at reconstructing an evolutionary history, usually represented by means of phylogenetic trees. The approach followed by the classification is hierarchical, and rather in coherence with the dichotomies traditionally used for identifying a certain species. But classification and identification are different, since the latter just aims at finding the name of a specimen, eventually in order to get information on it. There are many ways to identify a specimen: to trace it back to its origin, by following the bifurcations of its phylogenetic tree is one possibility, but not always the easiest and quickest one. This theme has been touched during the symposium…
Insect pests of the Herbarium of the Palermo botanical garden and evaluation of semiochemicals for the control of the key pest Lasioderma serricorne …
2020
Abstract The herbaria are scientific tools of great importance that preserve extinct, rare, endemic, and common plant species and also have importance as Cultural Heritage for their historical and esthetical value. Herbaria can be infested by several insect pests feeding on dried plants, and their management is often complicated and difficult as the use of chemical insecticides can have negative drawbacks. This suggests a strong need for alternative control tools such as the use of semiochemicals to develop Integrated Pest Management (IPM) programs. In order to identify the main insect pests that determine the damages on the exsiccata stored in the Palermo Botanical Garden's Herbarium, one …
A critical conspectus of ItalianIsoetes(Isoetaceae)
2014
The work on the Isoetaceae account for the Critical Flora of Italy has resulted in a new, synonymic inventory of Italian Isoetes taxa, based on herbarium studies, observation by scanning electron microscopy and critical re-examination of the previously published works. Ten species are listed. The names I. longissima and I. gymnocarpa are restored as correct, to replace I. velata and I. subinermis, respectively. Eighteen lectotypes, one epitype and one neotype are designated. A dichotomous key to Italian taxa is provided.
Karla Reinholda Kupfera herbāriju saraksts
2019
1929. gadā dabaspētnieks Karls Reinholds Kupfers (1872 – 1935) pārdeva Latvijas Universitātei savu herbāriju, kas bija izvietots skapjos, kam klāt bija kolektora sastādīts saraksts. Šobrīd LU Muzeja Botānikas un Mikoloģijas kolekcijās glabājas ne tikai šis aptuveni 26 700 lapu lielais herbārijs, kas veido Herbarium Balticum (starptautiskais kods RIG I), bet arī zinātnieka skapji, kuros izvietots K. R. Kupfera mantojuma apakškolekcija.
A critical conspectus of Italian Lycopodiaceae
2015
As a result of our work on the Lycopodiaceae account for the Critical Flora of Italy, a new, synonymic inventory of Italian taxa is presented, based on herbarium studies and critical re-examination of extant literature. Three genera with eight species are accepted: Huperzia (1 species), Lycopodiella (1), and Lycopodium (6). An additional, ninth species (Lycopodiella cernua) is listed as a casual alien. The genus Diphasiastrum, accepted in several recent works, is treated at sectional level within Lycopodium (three species and their three hybrids). Lycopodium lagopus ( = L. clavatum subsp. monostachyon) is a recent addition to the Italian flora. Images of five types and Internet URI of other…
Surgical treatment of pharyngostomes in irradiated patients. Our experience with musculocutaneous pectoralis major flap and hyperbaric oxygen therapy
2005
Surgical treatment of pharyngostomes in irradiated patients. Our experience with musculocutaneous pectoralis major flap and hyperbaric oxygen therapy. Cordova A, Corradino B, Pirrello R, Di Lorenzo S, Dispenza C, Moschella F. Source Dipratimento di Discipline Chirurgiche ed Oncologiche, Divisione di Chirurgia Plastica e Ricostruttiva, Facolta di Medicina, Universita di Palermo, Palermo, Italy. chirplas@unipa.it Abstract CONCLUSION: Our experience confirms that pectoralis major flap is the first-choice technique for repairing recurrent hypopharyngeal fistulae in previously irradiated patients in whom microsurgical techniques are not indicated, and that hyperbaric oxygen therapy helps to solv…
A taxonomic revision of the Capparis spinosa group (Capparaceae) from the Mediterranean to Central Asia
2014
A revision of the Capparis spinosa group has been carried out in southern Europe, northern Africa, western and central Asia, in order to provide a uniform taxonomic treatment of its representatives. The xerotropical origin of this group, showing disjunct distribution in several holoarctic and paleotropical regions, is underlined and the different species concepts historically adopted are discussed. In the present treatment a single species is recognized, C. spinosa , represented in the study area by two subspecies. C. spinosa subsp. spinosa shows derived characters, high polymorphism and a wide distribution range from the Mediterranean eastwards to China and Nepal. C. spinosa subsp. rupestr…
Viola canina × uliginosa herbārijs no Moricsalas
1909
Paula Lakševica (Lackschewitz; 1865 – 1936) Moricsalā ievāktais vijolītes Viola canina × uliginosa herbārijs glabājas Herbarium Latvicum (RIG II) kolekcijā Latvijas Universitātes Muzeja Botānikas un mikoloģijas kolekcijās. Herbārijs ir ievākts, veicot sākotnējo salas floras izpēti, kurā piedalījās vairāki Baltijas dabaspētnieki. Izpētes rezultāti kalpoja par pamatu, Moricsalas dabas rezervāta izveidei.
The Isoetes longissima complex (Isoetaceae) in Italy: observations on the morphology of spores and leaves, and taxonomic implications
2014
The morphological variability of the Isoetes longissima complex in Italy has been analyzed, on the basis of selected herbarium specimens. Observations were made on spore ornamentation and size, number of leaves per plant and maximum leaf length, velum extension and alae width in the basal portion of leaves. The first count of chromosome number on plants from Italy is also made. On the basis of our observations, the five taxa here considered are attributed to two taxa, treated at the species level as follows: I. longissima (incl. I. velata and I. velata [unranked] sicula), and I. tiguliana (incl. I. dubia). Italian distribution of these species is also given.
