A note on the iterative object symmetry transform

2004

This paper introduces a new operator named the iterated object transform that is computed by combining the object symmetry transform with the morphological operator erosion. This new operator has been applied on both binary and gray levels images showing the ability to grasp the internal structure of a digital object. We present also some experiments on artificial and real images and potential applications.

Dye-tracer technique for rill flows by velocity profile measurements

2020

Abstract Water flow on hillslope soil surface supplies energy which is required to detach soil particles, to transport and deposit sediments, therefore flow velocity is a key variable related to hillslope hydrodinamics of soil erosion processes. Among the different methods available for measuring velocity of shallow interrill and rill flow, the trace technique is widely used. Trace technique is applied by adding a material (salt, magnetic material, water isotope, floating object) and then measuring the speed of the material to travel a known distance from the injection point. When flow velocity is measured using a dye-tracing method, the mean velocity is calculated by multiplying the measur…

Flume experiments for assessing the dye-tracing technique in rill flows

2021

Abstract Flow velocity controls hillslope soil erosion and is a key hydrodynamic variable involved in sediment transport and deposition processes. The dye-tracer technique is one of the most applied methods for measuring velocity of shallow interrill and rill flow. The technique is based on the injection of a tracer in a specific point and the measurement of its speed to travel the known distance from the injection point to a given channel section. The dye-tracer technique requires that the measured surface flow velocity has to be corrected to obtain the mean flow velocity using a correction factor which is generally empirically deduced. The technique has two sources of uncertainties: i) th…

Case studies - Research and technological solutions to prevent sand production in the gas wells from the Getic Depression

2021

A frequent challenge encountered in the exploitation of mature gas fields located in the Getic Depression is sand production. Causes of sand production are mainly related to degree of rock consolidation, lithology, increasing water production and production rates. The effects of sand production are multiple such us low productivity of the gas wells, accumulation into the surface equipment, erosion of downhole and surface equipment, plugging the perforation zone and casing damage. The current paper will address the sand production- challenges and new perspectives in remedial work of wells which are producing from gas reservoirs located in Getic Depression. The article presents through some c…

Fuel inventory and material migration of JET main chamber plasma facing components compared over three operational periods

2020

Fuel retention and material migration results from JET ITER-like wall beryllium limiter tiles are presented for three operating periods. Ion beam analysis results support the general picture of erosion during limiter configurations with local deposition on tile ends far into the scrape off layer. Similar trends of fuel concentrations are observed in all JET operating periods; (i) low on surfaces exposed to high heat flux and erosion and (ii) higher in deposits. The pattern of fuel retention and deposition correlates with heat flux and distribution of limiter plasmas touching inner and outer limiters. The D/Be ratio in the thickest deposit is similar to 0.01. Global fuel retention attributed…

Iterative Symmetry Detection: Shrinking vs. Decimating Patterns

2005

This paper introduces a new mechanism that consists of applying a symmetry operator on an iteratively transformed version of the input image. The nature of the transformation characterizes the operator. Here, we consider the Object Symmetry Transform combined with the morphological operator erosion and the pyramid decimation respectively. The derived operators have been applied on both binary and gray levels images, comparing their ability to grasp the internal structure of a digital object. We present some experiments to evaluate their performances and check them for result quality versus computing complexity.

On the generation and degradation of emerged coral reef terrace sequences: First cosmogenic 36Cl analysis at Cape Laundi, Sumba Island (Indonesia)

2021

(IF 4.45: Q1); International audience; The emerged coral reef terrace sequence at Cape Laundi, on the north coast of Sumba Island (Indonesia), with at least 18 successive strandlines, remains poorly dated in spite of numerous previous data. The age discrepancies within these coral reef terraces (CRTs) were previously explained by their polycyclic nature, triggered by marine erosion and reoccupation of old coral colonies by new ones. This study aims at highlighting these processes, as well as the continental denudation that participates in the partial stripping of the thin superficial coral reef layer overlying the pre-existing surface, exhuming older coral colonies. For this purpose, we use…
