Unitary Space–Time Constellation Design Based on the Chernoff Bound of the Pairwise Error Probability
2008
Unitary space-time constellation design is considered for noncoherent multiple-antenna communications, where neither the transmitter nor the receiver knows the fading coefficients of the channel. By employing the Clarke's subdifferential theorem of the sum of the kappa largest singular values of a unitary matrix, we present a numerical optimization procedure for finding unitary space-time signal constellations of any dimension. The Chernoff bound of the pairwise error probability is used directly as a design criterion. The constellations are found by performing gradient descent search on a family ldquosurrogaterdquo functions that converge to the maximum pairwise error probability. The comp…
Risk, Terrorism, and Tourism Consumption
2017
The present chapter discusses to what extent the rise of new risks and dangers, modernity has brought, has causing the end of tourism. The answer to the above formulated questions is not easy, and of course, it exhibits a fertile ground to be explored in other approaches. The ceaseless news about violence, cruelty, wars and deaths have serious negative impacts on audience worldwide. Though policy makers have devoted their time and efforts in looking for new alternative segments where death replaces the allegory of beautiness, giving as a result new products as dark-tourism, slum-tourism, disaster-tourism or doom-tourism, other problems arise. The curiosity for tourists in visiting spaces of…
Terrorism and Tourism: two sides of the same coin
2018
The present short essay brings the problem of terrorism into the foreground. Basically, terrorism not only was catalogued as the major threat for Western civilization but also for tourism and hospitality industries. We hold the thesis that far from being affected by, tourism and terrorism share the same origin, the same point of convergence, which dates back towards nineteen century and the unification and formation of the first worker unions. Though polemic, our argumentation is based on the historical facts and evidence left by the action of first anarchists in the US. The same benefits prompted by anarchosyndicalists who by an extreme violence shocked the government, were the background …
Repeatability of in vitro power profile measurements for multifocal contact lenses
2015
Abstract Purpose To evaluate the repeatability of an optical device (NIMO TR1504, Lambda-X, Belgium) for measuring multifocal contact lens power profiles. Methods The NIMO TR1504 was used to measure power profiles 30 times for each of 10 different contact lenses from 4 major companies. All contact lenses were labelled as −3 D for distance vision; half were for high addition and half for low addition. The optical zone in all measurements was set to 3-mm radius. For each lens, the median power profile and the residuals of the 30 measurements were calculated. The 95% confidence bands and two indices that summarize measurement errors were calculated: the repeatability limit and an index of repe…
Slaying the SA-Demons – Humans vs. Technology – A Content analysis
2021
This paper examines Situation Awareness (SA) and the application of Endsley’s SA-Demons in different contexts and research areas. We perform content analysis to examine how they are used, and to what degree they are perceived as stemming from human-error or weaknesses in technology and if any suggestions for mitigation are primarily focused on the human or the technology side. Based on our findings, we propose Universal Design as a tool that can counter the effects of the SA-Demons by improving the usability and accessibility of SA-supporting technology and thereby removing barriers to SA, rather than challenging the users to overcome not only barriers that are a result of the complexity of…

Control Flow Error Checking with ISIS
2005
The Interleaved Signature Instruction Stream (ISIS) is a signature embedding technique that allows signatures to co-exist with the main processor instruction stream with a minimal impact on processor performance, without sacrificing error detection coverage or latency. While ISIS incorporate some novel error detection mechanisms to assess the integrity of the program executed by the main processor, the limited number of bits available in the signature control word question if the detection mechanisms are effective detecting errors in the program execution flow. Increasing the signature size would negatively impact the memory requirements, so this option has been rejected. The effectiveness …

Derivation of high-resolution leaf area index maps in support of validation activities: Application to the cropland Barrax site
2009
The validation of coarse satellite-derived products from field measurements generally relies on up-scaling the field data to the corresponding satellite products. This question is commonly addressed through the generation of a reference high-resolution map of an area covering several moderate resolution pixels. This paper describes a method by which reference leaf area index (LAI) maps can be generated from ground-truth LAI measurements. The method is based on a multivariate ordinary least squares (OLS) algorithm which uses an iteratively re-weighted least squares (IRLS) algorithm. It provides an empirical relationship (i.e. a transfer function) between in situ measurements and concomitant …
Making Communication Strategy Choices in a Fast Evolving Crisis Situation—Results from a Table-Top Discussion on an Anthrax Scenario
2016
This paper aims at clarifying a timely topic of how communication strategy choices are made in evolving, complex crises, such as those caused by terrorism involving chemical, biological, radiological, or nuclear (CBRN) agents. This is done by examining data gathered from a table-top discussion among crisis communication experts, focusing on a scenario of an anthrax attack and analysed qualitatively. The communication experts followed the evolving crisis situation by gathering inputs from various actors in the crisis management network, thereby creating situational understanding, and interpreted these inputs for decision-making on communication strategies. The underlying process of coping wi…
