Synthesis of the Data on COVID-19 Skin Manifestations: Underlying Mechanisms and Potential Outcomes

2021

Abstract The incidence of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19)-related skin manifestations has progressively grown, in parallel with the global severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) spreading. The available evidence indicates that cutaneous signs are heterogeneous and can be divided as follows: a) erythematous rashes, b) lesions of vascular origin, c) vesicular rashes, d) urticarial rashes, and e) acute generalized exanthematous pustulosis (AGEP), erythema multiforme (EM) and other polymorphic/atypical reactions. Most cutaneous manifestations appear simultaneously or after respiratory and/or systemic symptoms such as fever, even if rarely urticaria has been reported as…

FRI0189 POOLED ANALYSIS OF THE REAL-WORLD EFFECTIVENESS OF BELIMUMAB IN TREATMENT OF SYSTEMIC LUPUS ERYTHEMATOSUS USING MULTI-COUNTRY DATA FROM THE O…

2019

Background: Real-world evidence of belimumab effectiveness in patients with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) has been reported separately for several countries through the OBSErve (evaluation Of use of Belimumab in clinical practice SEttings) programme. Objectives: To evaluate the effectiveness of belimumab in patients with SLE using pooled data from the individual OBSErve studies. Methods: This was a post hoc meta-analysis (GSK study 206351) of patient level data pooled from six retrospective observational cohort studies (Argentina, Canada, Germany, Spain, Switzerland, United States of America). Physicians provided data for adults (≥18 years; clinical diagnosis of SLE) who had initiated …

Analysis of skin basalioma and melanoma by multispectral imaging

2012

A clinical trial involving multi-spectral imaging of histologically confirmed 8 basaliomas and 30 melanomas was performed. Parametric maps of the melanin index, erythema index and melanoma-nevus differentiation parameter have been constructed and mutually compared. Specific features of basalioma and melanoma images were analyzed and discussed.

Rosacea assessment by erythema index and principal component analysis segmentation maps

2017

RGB images of rosacea were analyzed using segmentation maps of principal component analysis (PCA) and erythema index (EI). Areas of segmented clusters were compared to Clinician’s Erythema Assessment (CEA) values given by two dermatologists. The results show that visible blood vessels are segmented more precisely on maps of the erythema index and the third principal component (PC3). In many cases, a distribution of clusters on EI and PC3 maps are very similar. Mean values of clusters’ areas on these maps show a decrease of the area of blood vessels and erythema and an increase of lighter skin area after the therapy for the patients with diagnosis CEA = 2 on the first visit and CEA=1 on the …

Does anti-inflammatory drugs modify the severe odontogenic infection prognosis? A 10-year’s experience

2020

Background Numerous biochemical datas support the noxious role of anti-inflammatory drugs on immune response. Those observations are often put forward for unfavorable evolution of odontogenic infection but has never been really proven in clinic. The aim of this study is to try to clarify this role based on the collection of the clinical course of odontogenic infections over a 10-year analysis period. Material and Methods The investigators implemented a prospective observational study. The sample was composed of patients managed between January 2004 and December 2014 for severe odontogenic infection based on three criteria: hospital admission, intravenous antibiotic therapy, tooth extraction…

Interferon-beta: a therapeutic for autoimmune lupus in MRL-Faslpr mice.

2005

Type I interferons are associated with lupus. Genes that are regulated by IFN-alpha are upregulated in pediatric lupus patients. Gene deletion of the IFN-alpha/beta receptor in experimental lupus-like NZB mice results in reduced disease activity. Conversely, IFN-beta is a well-established treatment in multiple sclerosis, another autoimmune disease. For determining whether IFN-beta treatment is harmful or beneficial in lupus, MRL-Fas(lpr) mice were injected with this type I IFN. Treatment was initiated in MRL-Fas(lpr) mice with mild and advanced disease. IFN-beta was highly effective in prolonging survival and ameliorating the clinical (renal function, proteinuria, splenomegaly, and skin les…

MDS-191: Long-Term Efficacy and Safety of Luspatercept in Lower-Risk Myelodysplastic Syndromes (MDS): Phase 2 PACE-MDS Study

2020

Background: Luspatercept, a first-in-class erythroid maturation agent, has been investigated in patients with LR-MDS and ring sideroblasts (RS) (MEDALIST; Fenaux and Platzbecker NEJM 2020) and in an ongoing Phase 3 trial regardless of RS status (COMMANDS, NCT03682536 ). The previously reported Phase 2 trial of luspatercept (Platzbecker Lanc Onc 2017) includes subtypes of LR-MDS with and without RS, regardless of prior ESA exposure, and various EPO levels. Aims: Evaluate the long-term safety and efficacy of luspatercept in LR-MDS. Methods: Patients were IPSS low/int-1, age ≥ 18 years, Hgb NCT01749514 ; NCT02268383 ). Results: As of 13July2019, 115 patients were enrolled, of whom 108 were tre…

Open-label ODYSSEY APPRISE study: Interim data from the first 843 participants

2018

Background PCSK9 inhibitors (PCSK9i) have been recommended by the ESC/EAS Task Force in very high risk subjects with ASCVD and those with heterozygous familial hypercholesterolemia (HeFH) with persistent high LDL-C levels despite maximally tolerated LLT. Purpose ODYSSEY APPRISE (NCT02476006) is the first study to assess efficacy and safety at Week (W) 12 of the PCSK9i alirocumab (ALI) in a real-life setting prior to commercial availability. Methods APPRISE was an open-label, single-arm study, conducted in 16 European countries and Canada. Subjects with inadequately controlled lipid levels despite maximally tolerated LLT were included. Based on physician's judgment, participants received eit…

Factitial pemphigus-like lesions

2007

The maxillofacial region is rarely subjected to self-inflicted conditions such as factitious disease. Nasal ulceration, facial emphysema, periorbital ecchymosis, mandibular subluxation, gingival and mucosal ulceration, dental and salivary gland pain and glossopharyngeal neuralgia have been reported as possible manifestations of factitious disease. We report a case of a young woman who presented with unilateral bullous and ulcerative oral and erythematous facial lesions that were initially diagnosed as pemphigus vulgaris but was later determined to be secondary to self-inflicted injuries. To the best of the authors? knowledge, this clinical scenario has not been previously reported in the co…
