Continuation of glycolysis in human erythrocytes by incubation of heparinized whole blood at 37°C is followed by a decrease in the Mg-content of red cells. On inhibition of glycolysis by cold (4°C), the Mg-content of erythrocytes remains unaltered or, often, slightly increases. These actions are in clear contrast to the behaviour of potassium ions under the same conditions.

Es wird eine Ubersicht uber die mathematischen und experimentellen Aspekte des O2-Austausches im Erythrozyten gegeben. Der Gesamtprozess kann als eine Sauerstoffdiffusion mit gekoppelter Hamoglobin-Sauerstoff-Reaktion beschrieben werden. Fur die mathematische Analyse muss also die partielle Differentialgleichung der Diffusion durch ein Gleichungssystem erweitert werden, das dem chemischen Reaktionsablauf Rechnung tragt. Voraussetzung hierfur ist die Aufstellung eines Modells zur molekularen Interpretation der O2-Bindungskurve. Die vereinfachten Differentialgleichungen fur Diffusion und Reaktion lassen sich unter Beachtung der Rand- und Anfangsbedingungen nur naherungsweise integrieren.
Red blood cell sodium and potassium after hydrochlorothiazide.

In six of seven healthy males 6 days of hydrochlorothiazide (HCT), 50 mg twice daily, without potassium supplements resulted in a rise in red blood cell (RBC) sodium concentration. Serum potassium concentration fell in all subjects. Four days after discontinuing HCT, intracellular sodium and extracellular potassium concentrations had normalized. Throughout the evaluation period the course of mean relative intracellular sodium was almost a mirror image of mean relative extracellular potassium. Plasma from Ciona intestinalis, Phallusia mamillata and Ascidia malaca possess hemagglutinin for a variety of erythrocytes. Results obtained by physical and chemical treatments suggest that hemagglutinin for Phallusia mamillata and Ascidia malaca may be a protein or a protein-like substance.

Abstract Whole blood filtration, mean erythrocyte aggregation, and erythrocyte membrane fluidity were examined in 10 patients with vascular atherosclerotic disease (VAD) and in 15 VAD patients with noninsulin-dependent diabetes mellitus (NIDDM) treated with mesoglycan (100 mg orally twice a day) for 30 days. The red cell membrane transverse fluidity gradient was evaluated in the VAD subjects, and the red cell membrane protein lateral mobility was measured in the VAD subjects with NIDDM. In both groups, mesoglycan treatment was responsible for an increase in erythrocyte membrane fluidity. Using a special apparatus for high resolution cinephotomicrography, which allows simultaneous observation and recording of microcirculatory changes, alterations in blood flow patterns and in red cell shape during norepinephrine acting have been studied. Under physiological conditions, and during slowing of capillary blood flow due to gradual removing of 20–25% of the circulating blood volume, the normal red cells are extremely deformable while passing through mesenteric capillaries. SUMMARY 1. In our study we followed the growth rate and the haematologic changes occurring in albino rats of Wistar strain when living in a hypoxic environment. Two generations of hypoxic rats were observed for changes in their erythrocytes (RBC), haematocrit (Hct) and haemoglobin (Hb): the first generation (H1) and the second generation (H2). A few hours after birth, the H1 rats were placed and raised in a normobaric hypoxic environment (10% O2 in N2). The H2 rats were born and raised in the environment previously described. Abstract Confocal laser scanning microscopy and fluorescence microphotolysis (also referred to as fluorescence photobleaching recovery) were employed to study the transport of hydrophilic fluorescent tracers through complement and perforin pores. By optimizing the confocal effect it was possible to determine the exclusion limit of the pores in situ, i.e. without separation of cells and tracer solution. Single-cell flux measurements by fluorescence microphotolysis yielded information on the sample population distribution of flux rates.
