This article focuses on two non-fiction works by Native American author N. Scott Momaday: his 1969 historical memoir The Way to Rainy Mountain and his essay collection The Man Made of Words. It specifically tackles performative conceptions of language in the Kiowa storytelling tradition, where words are experienced as speech acts that have the power to intervene in surrounding realities. Taking into account 20th century ethno-cultural and linguistic policies in the United States, the article also reflects on the role indigenous languages may play in contemporary Native American Literature, which has most often been written in English.

Constitueix una idea compartida entre sociòlegs, economistes, historiadors, i cada vegada més entre filòsofs, que assistim a uns canvis tan pregons en la configuració de la societat que en altres moments històrics no haguéssem dubtat d'utilitzar la paraula «revolució» per esmentar-los, però com que avui aquest mot ha caigut en desús, emprem expressions com ara "nova era", "emergent", i d'altres. Tanmateix, no dubte que si entenem que «revolució» és un canvi en aquells elements estructurals de la societat, tant en l'àmbit econòmic com en el polític, cultural, etc., que permeten albirar una nova estructuració i una nova autopercepció de la societat, assistim a una «revolució».

Immediately following the 9/11 attacks, a number of picture books for children were published as a response to the new socio-political context in the United States. This article explores how these books constitute an essentialist discourse whose themes and perspectives can be considered strategic. As will be analyzed, they reveal a ¿natural¿ positioning that generates a degree of group identification and constructs drastic dichotomies such as us versus them, by overlooking internal differences, reasserting the values of patriotism and national identity, and fostering the emergence of jingoistic dynamics that bring difference / sameness into play. We suggest that these categories are not objective situation classes, but different (subjective) ways of conceptualizing the dynamics and the discreteness of a given situation.
