Symbols and Meanings in Breast Cancer Awareness Campaigns
2013
This article examines symbols and meanings in breast cancer awareness campaigns, and the ways in which multifarious actors draw attention to the disease. We discuss what the various campaigns and initiatives can indicate, above and beyond creating breast cancer awareness. Our data stem from sources such as printed material, the Internet, and events. From these sources we have singled out and explored objects, text, and visual expressions, looking in particular for metaphors and symbolic aspects. In this article we present six “images” indicating the underlying patterns that we found. We have called the images Re-enchantment of femininity, Infantilization, Corporate profit-making, Objectific…
(Un)exhausted Cartographies. Re-living the visuality, aesthetics and politics in contemporary mapping theories and practices
This thesis is concerned with examining the life and deadliness of the map trope in contemporary Human Geography and the various ways maps and mapping have been re-theorized over the past twenty five years. Arguing that there is presently a feeling of exhaustion and disinterest amongst many human geographers in the use of maps given a shift to postmodern and poststructural approaches that decentre maps and mistrust their supposed objectivity, their representational qualities, and use by institutions to justify certain political actions, it tries to relive the attention in the ubiquity and flourishing of contemporary mapping practices by promoting a re-worked post-representational perspectiv…
Embodied graffiti and street art research
2021
Graffiti and street art research (GSAR) has become more acknowledged within the academic discourse; however, it has much to gain from theorising its methodological aspects. As a multidisciplinary field, GSAR has mostly used qualitative research methods, exploring urban space through methods that range from visual recordings to ethnography, emphasising the researchers’ reflexivity. This qualitative approach has, however, paid little attention to the role of embodied practices. In this paper we discuss how embodied methodologies provide multisensory research results where the experienced moments, the participant’s and researcher’s senses, cognition and mobility in urban spaces are connected.…
A New System for Choosing the Form and Size of Complete Denture Anterior Teeth
2016
Introduction: In the absence of pre-extraction records, the choice of the size an form of anterior complete denture teeth can be extremely subjective. Several clinical and statistical parameters are usually used for choosing the correct size and form of the complete denture anterior teeth. Clinical Innovation: The technique consists of a system that allows the dentist to choose and, if necessary, easily change the dental mold during maxillomandibular recording session. The unique feature of the system is that six teeth of each mold are represented by veneers, which are connected to each other on the lingual surface by a fiber that allows each veneer some degree of movement. Discussion: This…
Organizational Culture Beyond Consensus and Clarity: Narratives From Elite Sport
2020
In sport psychology, organizational culture is usually depicted as shared, consistent, and clear—the glue that holds people together so they can achieve success. There is, however, growing discontent in sport psychology with this idea of culture and extensive critiques in other academic domains that suggest this perspective is limited. Accordingly, the authors draw on narrative interviews with participants (n = 7) from different areas of sport and use Martin and Meyerson’s three perspective (integration, differentiation, and fragmentation) approach to culture alongside thematic analysis to reconstruct three “ideal cases” that exemplify each perspective. The findings emphasize a different pa…
Customer Engagement Enhancement on Instagram : Strategies for Small and Medium Enterprises
2022
This study aims to examine the effects of visual aesthetics (i.e., classical and expressive) and lengths of textual information (LTI) on customer engagement (i.e., likes and comments) in the contexts of Instagram and small and medium enterprises (SMEs). Data were collected through the content analysis on Instagram, consisting of 1,147 posts, 758,462 likes, and 24,059 comments from 10 fashion SMEs in Indonesia. The results demonstrate that longer LTI can improve likes and comments. In relation to visual aesthetics, while independently it has no effect on likes and comments, it negatively affects likes when combined with medium and long LTI. Theoretically, this study extends content marketing…
On Equal Terms? : On Implementing Infants’ Cultural Rights
2020
How can we implement infants’ cultural rights? Is there even reason to confer such rights to non-speaking children, or is it enough that we recognise slightly older children as culturally active individuals? Acknowledging children’s intellectual capacities and their right to be heard in matters that concern them are important threads in research on children and ideals of childrearing during the last hundred years. This development is parallel with the one leading from the Declaration of the Rights of the Child in 1923 to the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child in 1989. The spirit of human rights that informs these documents cannot be underestimated. Yet reading the Convention carefully…
Le paraître et la parure. Corporéité et animalité chez Merleau-Ponty et Deleuze
2013
This chapter presents an overview on the corporeality and animality in Merleau-Ponty and Deleuze. Ontological dimension of perception was particularly highlighted in the Phenomenology of Perception and this work will deepen considerably even in the visible and invisible by the introduction of theme of the flesh as "depth" and "being latency". Merleau-Ponty draws indeed fundamental philosophical conclusions about the structures of the Environment. Merleau-Ponty discusses the descriptive material assets and perceptual behavior of animals in their own environment, not in the laboratory. It is therefore a radical mistake to pretend to judge of animality in terms of theoretical knowledge. The in…
Playful Hands-on Crafting for Personal Growth and Communal Well-being
2017
Crafts education in Finland has recently been exposed to considerable challenges, on both the theoretical and practical levels. The emphasis is shifting to personal expression and communal arts and crafts practices are being adapted to solidify social and cultural participation. Learning research shows us how inner motivation and multilevel objectives in comfortable learning environments induce stable and generalizable learning results. In addition, collaborative ways of working make data processing more open and turn learning into a shared effort. On the other hand, playful learning and dramatic methods offer productive ways of examining life situations in an active and empathetic way. Whe…
