Tenses constitute a complex system of oppositions based on time, aspect, and temporal distance. Taking these oppositions as basic, this article deals with the stylistic properties that verbal tenses acquire in discourse. In addition, it presents an analysis of some stylistically marked uses of the imperfect, the future, the conditional, and the past perfect. In all these cases, the verbal tenses keep some of their basic properties but introduce temporal or aspectual changes that lead to pragmatic and stylistic changes closely related to certain narrative effects.

This paper summarizes articles and books about Catalan stylistics ans pragmatics. Variational research in catalan sociolinguistic describes standard, literary, and conversational forms. The paper explains the contents of these studies and distinguishes between oral and writing code. Emphasis is put on some aspects of variations, such as field of discourse, tone and tenor, wich determine the kind of registers. Another aspect trated in the paper is writings stylistic and the relationship between spoken language and its literary reproduction. El De Proprietate Animalium de Manuel Files es un poema didáctico del s. XIV que parafrasea libremente varias fuentes literarias de contenido zoológico, entre las que destaca la Historia Animalium de Claudio Eliano. Un análisis detallado de los procedimientos de sustitución léxica realizado por el autor, apoyado en la consulta de los diccionarios bizantinos, permite reconocer su originalidad compositiva, la riqueza expresiva de su vocabulario poético, pero también la clara conciencia de la existencia de diferentes niveles de lengua y de los muy diversos registros utilizados por el autor.
