Live-in migrant care worker arrangements in Germany and the Netherlands. Motivations and justifications in family decision-making

2019

Private households in ageing societies increasingly employ live-in migrant carers (LIMCs) to care for relatives in need of 24/7 care and supervision. Whilst LIMC arrangements are a common practice in Germany, they are only recently emerging in the Netherlands. Taking this development as a starting point, this study uses the countries’ different long-term care (LTC) regimes as the analytical framework to explore and compare the motivations and justifications of German and Dutch family carers who opt for an LIMC arrangment. Findings show that Dutch and German LTC regimes impact differently the decision-making processes of families, as well as on patterns of justification, through a combinatio…

Polarity profiles in reverse micelles of Triton X-100, as studied by spin probe and absorption probe techniques

1997

The microenvironment characteristics — polarity, viscosity and order degree - in Triton X-100 reverse micelles (RM) in cyclohexane and benzene — n-hexane 30 : 70 (v/v), were investigated with the aid of a homologous series of cationic spin probes, CAT n, of 5- and 16-doxyl stearic acids and of a new absorption probe, 4-nitropyridine-N-oxide (NP). The spectral parameters were related to local hydration values by means of a series of poly(oxyethylene) (PEO)/water calibration mixtures. All results regarding the polarities in RM and calibration mixtures have been expressed in terms of Kosower's Z values, by determining the linear dependence of the transition energies of NP, ENP, on Z, for a ser…

New Molecular Topologies by Fourfold Metathesis Reactions within a Hydrogen-Bonded Calix[4]arene Dimer

2003

A calix[4]arene tetrapentyl ether in the cone conformation substituted at its wide rim by four m-(omega-octenyloxy)phenyl urea groups forms hydrogen-bonded dimeric capsules in dichloromethane/benzene (95:5). Metathesis reaction with Grubbs' catalyst under high-dilution conditions (1.1 x 10(-4) M) followed by hydrogenation leads to a covalent connection of all the urea groups within a dimer. Three topologically different products may be expected in such a reaction: a bis[2]catenane, a doubly bridged monocatenane and a tetrabridged capsule. All three possible reaction products could be isolated in an overall yield up to 60 % for the separated and purified compounds. Their identification was b…

The title compound, C27H33NO5, obtained from diethyl ether, crystallizes in space group P2(1) with four molecules in the asymmetric unit. The dioxinone and imide rings are almost planar, whereas the cyclohexane and cyclohexene rings form distorted conformations. The crystal structure confirms an earlier proposal about the stereoselectivity of Diels - Alder reactions to spirocyclic chiral 1,3- dienes.

Coordinated Interpersonal Behaviour in Collective Dance Improvisation: The Aesthetics of Kinaesthetic Togetherness

2018

International audience; Collective dance improvisation (e.g., traditional and social dancing, contact improvisation) is a participatory, relational and embodied art form which eschews standard concepts in aesthetics. We present our ongoing research into the mechanisms underlying the lived experience of "togetherness" associated with such practices. Togetherness in collective dance improvisation is kinaesthetic (based on movement and its perception), and so can be simultaneously addressed from the perspective of the performers and the spectators, and be measured. We utilise these multiple levels of description: the first-person, phenomenological level of personal experiences, the third-perso…

Structural, vibrational, thermal and magnetic investigation of novel Co(II), Cu(II), Zn(II) and Hg(II) crystalline metal complexes with 2-amino-5-ben…

2005

Abstract The 2-amino-5-benzylmercapto-1,3,4-thiadiazole (C9H9N3S2) is a low weight model of a protonated copolymer resin used as a metal uptake agent. New monomeric crystalline metal complexes of C9H9N3S2 with Co(II), Cu(II), Zn(II) and Hg(II) were synthesized and investigated in order to facilitate the interpretation of the metal/resin binding mode. These materials have been studied by single crystal X-ray Diffraction and FTIR Spectroscopy at room temperature. Crystal data for these triclinic phases are reported. All frameworks consist of discrete monomeric units that provide crystalline stability through a network of hydrogen bond interactions. The Co(II), Zn(II) and Hg(II) ions are surro…

Synthesis, properties and crystal structure of bis(metiamide)bis(isothiocyanato)nickel(II)

1991

Abstract The crystal structure of Ni(metiamide)2(NCS)2 was determined by X-ray diffraction methods. Unlike cimetidine, which is a tridentate ligand, metiamide (C9H16N4S2): N-Methyl-N-[2-{(5-methylimidazol-4-yl)methylthio}ethyl]thiourea (which also possesses three potential donor sites) is bidentate, coordinated to the nickel atom through N(imidazole) and S(thioether) atoms. The S(thiourea) atom does not take part in the coordination; instead, the isothiocyanate ion is coordinated through nitrogen to the metal atom. The nickel atom lies on a centre of symmetry in an elongated octahedral environment: the nitrogen atoms occupy equatorial positions (NiN = 2.04 and 2.06 A) and S(thioether) atom…

Synthesis and reactivity of an 2-azabutadiene-based π-conjugated dithioether: Formation of a N,S-ligated molybdenum chelate complex and C,N,S-pincer …

2005

Abstract Nucleophilic attack of sodium isopropylthiolate on 4,4-dichloro-1,1-diphenyl-2-azabuta-1,3-diene [Cl2C C(H)–N CPh2}] (1) affords the 2-azabutadiene derivative [(i-PrS)2C C(H)–N CPh2] (2). Upon irradiation of Mo(CO)6 in THF in the presence of 2, the chelate complex cis-[(OC)4Mo{(i-PrS)2C C(H)–N CPh2}] (3) is obtained. Coordination on Mo occurs through the imine nitrogen and a thioether group. Polydentate dithioether 2 acts as N,C,S-pincer ligand after orthometallation reaction with Pd(II) or Pt(II). The molecular structures of 2 and (C,N,S)-[(i-PrS)2C C(H)–N C(Ph)C6H4)PtCl] (4b) have been determined by X-ray diffraction studies.

Microwave-assisted saponification of animal greases for cholesterol determination

1998

Abstract An alternative method for the hydrolysis of cholesterol esters in animal grease samples has been developed. The method consists of the microwave-assisted treatment of 4 g of animal fat or oil with 40 ml of an ethanolic KOH solution inside a 115 ml closed reactor in which samples were irradiated for 2.5 min at 50% power level of an exit power of 700 W. After extraction with petroleum ether and dissolution of the unsaponifiables in toluene, total cholesterol was determined spectrophotometrically by using p-anisidine as a test reagent of the enzymatic reaction of cholesterol through a bienzymic reactor in which cholesterol oxidase and horseradish peroxidase were noncovalently immobili…
