The four spheres of value co-creation in humanitarian professional services
2021
PurposeThe study focuses on the value co-creation processes in humanitarian professional services provision, analysing the key enabling factors of beneficiaries' participation, involved in long-term integration programmes (L-TIPs).Design/methodology/approachThrough an in-depth case study, the research looks at the practices of value co-creation in humanitarian professional services, considering both the perspectives of the professional service provider and beneficiary.FindingsIn professional services beneficiary's participation affects the success of the L-TIPs outcomes. Participation's enablers can be classified into four different spheres, each belonging to different elements of professio…
Improving problem solving and creativity through use of complex-dynamic simulations
2002
This article presents an instructional method to improve problem solving and creativity by employing computer-based simulations. The instructional method described is based upon empirical research conducted by the authors. The simulation presents contextually meaningful problem situations that require learners to analyze and prepare solution proposal(s). Following the learner input, the simulation assesses the proposal and offers back to the learners the consequences of their decisions while also iteratively updating the situational conditions. This type of simulation, unlike conventional simulations that are used for acquisition of knowledge, is complex-dynamic, requiring the learner to fu…
Absorptive capacity and its impact on innovation and performance: findings from SEM and fsQCA
2018
Innovation can provide sustainable competitive advantages to service companies that consider the absorption of external knowledge a key strategic issue. Using the four dimensions of absorptive capacity, this study examined the impact of absorptive capacity on innovation in service delivery processes and explored how this innovation influences business performance. Structural equation modeling (PLS-SEM) and fuzzy-set qualitative comparative analysis (fsQCA) were applied to a sample of 134 companies drawn from the Colombian tourism sector. The results of the SEM indicate that innovation in service delivery processes is positively influenced by two of the four dimensions of absorptive capacity…
Paesaggio, piano, progetto: problemi lessicali e altro
2012
The notion of landscape and the techniques for landscape design must necessarily be based on two principal regulatory provisions, the European Landscape Convention and in Italy the law on cultural heritage and landscape. Consideration must also be given to what is meant by the term ‘landscape' in normal and specialist parlance and to the nature of the training of landscape architects, because it is from all this that the ambiguities and misunderstandings that surround the notion of landscape originate. Consideration must also be given to the relations between planning and real and local transformations, because the contents and procedures for the formulation of designs depend on them. Lands…
Wild and the City
2019
Celebrating the aesthetic, ethical and ecological values of alleged ‘spontaneous nature’ is therefore a recurrent mandate in many projects and inspires numerous urban policies. Someone adopts this perspective as the only one possible for the ‘salvation of the cities’, marrying the reasons of the most orthodox ecology with a sometimes fideistic approach. Someone else embraces the cause of the fusion between wildness and urbanity for new opportunistic marketing operations in the global urban trade, interweaving the religion of environmental sustainability with the enhancement of biodiversity, often understood as a real capitalization. Still others, on the contrary, look at this phenomenon wit…
Obiezione di coscienza e vulnerabilità. Il lato oscuro dei movimenti di resistenza alle vaccinazioni obbligatorie.
2019
After a worrying decrease of the rate of vaccination, Italian Parliament has enacted the law 119/2017 which raises the number of mandatory vaccination and prohibits unvaccinated children, except those for medical reasons, to attend infant school. In this paper, I focus on the moral justification of antivaccinist groups by applying the account of conscientious objection provided by Raz and followed by Gascón Abellan and Saporiti. According to this conception, conscientious objection is a moral right insofar as it is an instance of a right to privacy, which entails the right to do wrong. I show how this conception cannot justify these movements insofar as 1) it assumes a moral topography in w…
A Just Criminalization of Irregular Immigration: Is It Possible?
2015
The aim of this paper is to question, from the perspective of a principled theory of criminalization, the legitimacy of making irregular immigration (IM) a crime. In order to do this, I identify three main ways in which the political decision to introduce a crime of IM may be defended: according to the first, IM is a malum in se the wrongness of which resides in its being a violation of states’ territorial sovereignty; according to the second, IM is a justified malum prohibitum the wrongness of which resides in its being a violation of a justified immigration regulation; according to the third, IM is a malum in se the wrongness of which resides in its harmful consequences for receiving stat…

Looking for the "Vulnerable Subject": The Mencian Account of the Person
2019
The idea of the legal subject as an autonomous agent, with the capacity to choose and freely determine herself without external constraints or interference, complete in herself and independent, has had remarkable normative implications in structuring contemporary legal systems. The philosopher Martha Fineman recently argued against this notion, proposing the alternative one of “vulnerable subject.” This paper suggests that the notion of the person elaborated by the classical Confucian thinkers encompasses the “vulnerable subject.” The Confucian theorizations resonate with the ethic of care; however, their moral and normative relevance carries the potential for a broader scope of application…
Bioetica, sacralità della vita e virtù. Osservazioni critiche su un recente libro di M. La Torre
2022
In this paper, some critical remarks on M. La Torre’s book, Bioetica in tempo di pandemia are exposed. These remarks concerns: 1) the justification of paternalism according to La Torre’s liberal account of bioethics. If paternalism is justified then it is open to debate in which sense his proposal can be labelled as “liberal”; 2) what one earns with assuming that in order to solve conflicts of values we should prefer moral specificationism in front of Alexy’s balancing between legal principles. We will show that in arguing for specificationism La Torre tries to avoid the phenomenon of tragic choice, without succeeding; 3) the lack of clarity in depicting the idea of “sacred life”. This idea…
