Whistle-blowing and Education Management
2016
Contemporary management studies usually concern positive and desir- able solutions that increase the organizational effectiveness and perfor- mance. That is why graduates of higher business schools, equipped with idealistic views on business environment, need to face the dark side of business practice without the appropriate preparation. Their unawareness of the risk associated with management misconduct results in corrupt scandals, erosion of public trust to their organizations, or even the collapse of profitable corporations. Underestimation of unethical behaviors may lead to severe consequences. The last decade, in fact, has been abundant in numerous examples of corruption scandals in mo…
QUALITÀ DELL’ETICA PUBBLICA, QUALITÀ POLITICA E COSTITUZIONI ITALIANE
2013
The Author treats the argument of the quality of public ethics starting from norms that regulate it in various Sicilian Constitutions of the 19th century until Constitutional Chart of the Italian Republic. Therefore, he shows how the Sicilian Constitution of 1812, modeled according to the example of political institutions of Great Britain, and that of 1848 both have already had a great interest towards the profile of morality exercised in the political life and how both have prescribed the parliamentary decadence of Deputies who made themselves guilty of having corrupted the electorate in order to be elected or became authors of criminal offences. The question of the quality of public ethics…
"Corporate governance": approcci manageriali ed etici a confronto
2009
Working with Traditional Knowledge: Information for Botanical Fieldwork
2012
Botanical research can often involve access to traditional knowledge, as well as to botanical material held or managed by Indigenous and Local Communities (ILCs). There is a large and growing body of local, national and international laws, declarations and codes of conduct to guide best practice in this area. Researchers and students must be aware of this changing framework before collecting material and information in areas inhabited by ILCs.
Circumcision and Sexually Transmitted Disease Prevention: Evidence and Reticence
2017
Circumcision is one of the oldest surgical procedures and the most common surgical procedure performed on males. It is practiced for three main reasons: ritual or religious meanings, prophylactic hygienic purposes, and therapeutic indications. Male circumcision is advocated as an efficacious prevention strategy against sexually transmitted diseases. One of the main biological mechanisms responsible for the lower human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection rate in heterosexual circumcised men is the protective effect of keratinization of the glans. Moreover, male circumcision removes the inner part of the prepuce containing Langerhans cells that are targeted by HIV. Several observational st…

Adolescents' engagement profiles and their association with academic performance and situational engagement
2020
Abstract This study examined adolescents' engagement profiles and their association with situational engagement and academic performance in lower secondary school settings. The data consisted of 301 Grade 7 students from Finland. By utilizing person-oriented approach with Latent Profiling Analysis on subscales capturing students' overall engagement, four subgroups of students with different overall engagement profiles were identified. These profile groups were further analyzed with respect to differences in student background (gender and maternal education), academic performance (GPA, and reading and mathematics tests), and lesson-specific situational engagement. The profile groups showed d…
Looking at the Nature of Ideas Through New Lenses
2006
What sets humans apart from other animals is not the use of technology: Many mammals are innovative in making simple tools to assist in life. But it is the sheer scale of technological development that distinguishes humans. Over the millennia, people have invented technologies, used them, and enhanced them. The once-innovative technologies become mundane elements of everyday contemporary life as human societies progress. The technological developments of the last decades have dramatically altered most humans’ way of life and perceptions of the myriad elements of the immediate and distant environment. It would not be an exaggeration to view humans as standing at the cusp of profound social c…
