Immune evasion, immunopathology and the regulation of the immune system.

2013

21 pages; International audience; Costs and benefits of the immune response have attracted considerable attention in the last years among evolutionary biologists. Given the cost of parasitism, natural selection should favor individuals with the most effective immune defenses. Nevertheless, there exists huge variation in the expression of immune effectors among individuals. To explain this apparent paradox, it has been suggested that an over-reactive immune system might be too costly, both in terms of metabolic resources and risks of immune-mediated diseases, setting a limit to the investment into immune defenses. Here, we argue that this view neglects one important aspect of the interaction…

Balance of Hedonic and Utilitarian Values in Information Systems Use

2015

This paper investigates the balance of hedonic and utilitarian values in information systems (IS). More specifically, we are interested in the continuum of such values in IS use. The paper reviews a set of literature to investigate the differences of hedonic and utilitarian IS and the role of hedonism in them. Furthermore, we define hedonic and utilitarian values in this context. We propose that the balance between hedonic and utilitarian values varies depending on the nature of the IS, and we present a conceptual model of hedonic and utilitarian values in IS use. The article provides an argument that the nature of the IS influences the balance of hedonic and utilitarian values that the IS …

Non-Kinetic Warfare Challenges of the Information Ecosystem’s Phenomenology – The Pattern to a New Battleground

2018

Abstract A new technological paradigm often leads to a new societal paradigm, and not vice versa. Challenges faced are not only related to technology, it is the human consciousness that determines the role and influences the outcome of these tools. A comprehensive approach is desirable to understand the regular and irregular interdependence between social ecosystems and information ecosystems. The phenomenon offers the facility to induce short-term attitudes, and long-term mutations from the perspective of societal security, informational actions shapes collective attitudes, and influences people's critical choices. Deciphering, exposing and counteracting information aggressions may be poss…

Perspective Correction For Image Processing

2015

Abstract The paper proposes an algorithm for applying the perspective correction of images containing human faces. Based on the coordinates of the two eyes, of the center of the mouth and of a point on the line of the mouth, one can estimate the angle of inclination of the face. After applying the perspective correction, the area corresponding to the face can be used by a face recognition algorithm based on aspect in order to improve the good recognition rate.

The Place and Role of Intellectual Property Policies in an Advanced Scientific Research and Education University

2017

Abstract Intellectual property plays an important role in the sustainable development of an university. Nowadays we can not talk about economic growth respectively about innovation and technology transfer if there is no analysis regarding the place and role of intellectual property protection in universities done. In this context, the authors conducted a study and have expressed a view on how the Intellectual Property policies must be understood and implemented later in an advanced scientific research and education university.

PASSIONATE DESCARTES: A REINTERPRETATION OF THE BODY'S ROLE IN CARTESIAN THOUGHT

2020

Abstract The usual reading of Descartes' “anthropological” perspective classifies it as a radical dualism with a distinction between two substances, mind and body, which experience major interaction difficulties. Through a contextualization of Descartes' physiological and psychological thought as well as through a less fragmented reading of his work, we intend to review this traditional interpretation, thereby showing its distorted character. When we pay attention to passion, a new Descartes’ image as a sort of phenomenal monism appears, which is markedly different from the legendary image typically associated with him, even today.

Sospensione riproduttiva temporanea: etica delle popolazioni e cambiamento climatico

2012

The article defends a proposal of demographic self-limitation that should be realized by the citizens of industrialized countries as a contribution to the reduction of global emissions, for the benefit of future generations and emerging countries. It will also argue that many of the practical objections to the feasibility of this kind of voluntary choice are surmountable, as are some moral objections raised in the name of reproductive freedom and the value of future lives that would not be lived as a result of this choice.

Gender research from multiple disciplines: Profiles, commitments and interrelations in an interdisciplinary group

2016

One of the greatest difficulties in interdisciplinary work is being able to focus on a common project when efforts and hierarchies do not advance in the same direction. In this paper, we describe a particular group, Genre Egalité et Mixité, and its operation. This interdisciplinary research group on gender in education, created at the University of Lyon, explores the issue along three axes: professor training, scientific research and the creation of a specialised library. Coming from several disciplines, researchers have different profiles and, consequently, different conceptions of feminism, which makes the team unique.

The Mafia Boss Yesterday and Today: Psychological Characteristics and Research Data

2015

This article describes Cosa Nostra bosses’ psychological characteristics starting from research data collected over almost twenty years (1994–2013). Through the use of fragments of interviews to justice collaborators and their wives, children, and sisters-in-law, we analyze the boss’ role and relational context. This article also reports the results of a recent research on the relationship between boss and white-collar workers, carried out through the analysis of environmental tapping recorded at a famous Sicilian Mafia boss’ house: Giuseppe Guttadauro. This research highlights the psychological diversity the relationship between boss and white-collar worker is based on. The analysis of env…
