EU Referenda in the Baltics: Understanding the Results at the Regional Level

This paper analyses regional differences in EU referenda results in Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania. In each of the three countries, other things being equal, high income regions were significantly more pro-European than low-income ones, while regions with a high share of ethnic minorities were significantly more opposed to the enlargement than other regions. The ethnic effect was strongest in Latvia and weakest in Estonia. These findings clearly indicate necessity of stronger efforts both in integration of the Baltic societies and in the promotion of reliable EU information, especially in less developed regions. Since its development at the end of 19th century, Latvian national costume has become a symbol of national identity. The task of this article is to trace how the publications of ethnographers during the 20th century shaped the view of Latvian national costume. The appearance of national costume was influenced by the growing knowledge of the national cultural heritage. Although national costume resembling ethnographic examples was recognized as highly authentic, in reality it was a reconstruction created by museum staff and other ethnographic researchers. Abstract Background Students studying in a country where another language is spoken face multiple challenges including their ability to fully integrate with peers and academic pressures in trying to obtain an undergraduate nursing degree. The aim of the study was to explore the lived experiences of students, from varying cultural and ethnic backgrounds, undertaking an undergraduate nursing degree. Cognitive skills among Nepalese child labourers

The cognitive skills of 61 Nepalese 10-14-year-old working children with at least 2 years working experience (WE) were compared to two groups of children, beginners (N = 29) with less than 1 year of WE and a school group (N = 104) matched for age and ethnic background. All the children (N = 194) were tested by the Bender test, WISC-R for Arithmetic, Digit Span, and the Word Fluency test. The main results showed that the school group was better in all the cognitive tests, except for Digit Span Backwards, where the working group had the highest average score. A small scale village society from southern Turkey has been investigated by demographic, social and anthropological criteria. An internal differentiation of the population on the basis of demographic and social data could be verified for morphological features, too. This is shown clearly by a differentiation of the population into two family complexes. The consequences for the interpretation of metrical random sample surveys in typological investigations are discussed.

The Tagalog language of Manila has been chosen as the base of the national Pilipino language, even if Cebuano counts as many speakers.
