Ethnic and Religious Conflicts in France

2011

International audience; This chapter presents a detailed analysis of current and historical interethnic relations in France. Kamiejski, De Oliveira, and Guimond apply several theories in exploration of the variables related to the development of the existent ethnic tensions in this region. Policy models are also evaluated and considered as means of engendering harmony in the future. Discussion of the most recent and largest immigrant group to France, the Maghrebians, reveals several factors associated with increasing tensions including the large degree of assumed difference in values, religion, and culture. The authors recognize that France has set the stage for positive interethnic relatio…

Assessing the Performance of the Italian Translations of Modified MEIM, EIS and FESM Scales to Measure Ethnic Identity: A Case Study

2023

Measuring the ethnic identity of linguistic minorities is a research problem which can be tackled departing from a clear operational definition of the construct. This paper will present the performance of the Italian translations of various scales widely used in the relevant literature, which have been modified for the aims of this study and used in research conducted in 2016 in the ArberesheMunicipalities of Piana degli Albanesi and Santa Cristina Gela (Province of Palermo). These scales consist of modifications of the Multigroup Ethnic Identity Measure (MEIM), Ethnic Identity Scale (EIS) and Familial Ethnic Socialization Measure (FESM). The psychometric properties were analysed for all th…

Fabriquer un culte ethnique. Écriture rituelle et généalogies mythiques dans le sanctuaire des Paliques en Sicile.

2013

The sanctuary of the gods Palikoi in Sicily offers a rich dossier addressing the role of writing in the definition of ethnicity. Although literary evidence attest to the ”native“ nature of the gods, the presence of writing, inbedded in local culture through the Greek colonization, plays a curious role. It invites us to reflect upon contact processes and identity changes due to its appearance. The analysis focuses here on the ordeal oath (ritual writing) and on the mythical genealogies (discursive strategies): this set seems to be a "device" in many ways informed by the model of the "Middle Ground." Le sanctuaire des dieux Paliques en Sicile offre un dossier très riche à questionner pour ce …

Sequencing toponymic change: A quantitative longitudinal analysis of street renaming in Sibiu, Romania.

2021

Recent scholarship in critical toponymy studies has refashioned the understanding of street names from innocent labels to nominal loci of historical memory and vectors of collective identity that are embroiled with power relations. Urban nomenclatures consist of more than mere linguistic signposts deployed onto space to facilitate navigation. Street names are also powerful signposts that indicate the political regime and its socio-cultural values. Drawing on these theoretical insights, this paper is focused on Sibiu (Romania) and explore the city’s shifting namescape in a longitudinal perspective spanning one century and a half of modern history (1875–2020). The analysis is based on a compl…

Effect of a prenatal lifestyle intervention on physical activity level in late pregnancy and the first year postpartum

2017

Background: Despite documented health benefits for mother and baby, physical activity (PA)-level tends to decline in pregnancy. Overweight/obese and physically inactive women are two selected groups at increased risk of pregnancy complications. Thus, efficient strategies to maintain or increase PA-level in pregnancy and the postpartum period, especially among these women, are warranted. This secondary analysis examined the effect of a prenatal lifestyle-intervention on PA-level in late pregnancy and the first year postpartum, with subanalysis on initially physically active versus inactive and normal-weight versus overweight/obese women. Method: The Norwegian Fit for Delivery (NFFD) randomiz…

Group-Analytic Family Psychotherapy: A Transcultural Perspective

1997

Group-analytic family psychotherapy is a methodology based on a development of Group-analytic theory. The family is defined as a mental field formed by the symbolic plot of `us' in a double relationship: with the cultural history of the family group on one side, and with external groups on the other. The symbolic plot thus has a tribal characteristic which connects the genealogical trees to the ancestral foundation of the group. In cases of psychotic and borderline patients, Group-analytic family psychotherapy has indicated two types of family: those that are embedded in the past, or families that are cut off from the past. After outlining the circumstances of Italian families, this articl…

The interaction effect of gender and ethnicity in loan approval: A Bayesian estimation with data from a laboratory field experiment

2019

Microfinance targets women and uses loan provision as a tool for empowerment, which translates into better household nutrition, improved education, and a scale down of domestic violence. However, ethnic discrimination in microfinance may exist in countries with a segregated indigenous population. We assessed this possibility with a field experiment in Bolivia. The controlled laboratory experiment evaluated whether credit officers rejected microloan applications based on the interaction effect of ethnicity and gender of potential borrowers. Point estimates of a Bayesian mixed‐effects logistic regression, estimated with the experimental data, indicate that nonindigenous women have double the …

Kielitutkinto ohjaa opetusta ja kannustaa puhumaan

2017

Managed Multiculturalism in Finnish Media Initiatives

2007

This paper focuses on Finnish mainstream journalism featuring multiculturalism. Three different initiatives are analysed with a qualitative text method founded on discourse and frame analysis. Finnish mainstream journalism took a multicultural turn in the mid-990s, two decades later than in neighbouring Sweden where similar initiatives were launched in the 1970s. The paper takes a critical look at the power relations these initiatives assert or transgress, how multicultural discourses position various actors in society, and how the mainstream media encounter cultural and ethnic differences in a changing demographic situation with a positive intention.
