Content, cost, and context: A framework for understanding human signaling systems
2019
Humans frequently perform extravagant and seemingly costly behaviors, such as widely sharing hunted resources, erecting conspicuous monumental structures, and performing dramatic acts of religious devotion. Evolutionary anthropologists and archeologists have used signaling theory to explain the function of such displays, drawing inspiration from behavioral ecology, economics, and the social sciences. While signaling theory is broadly aimed at explaining honest communication, it has come to be strongly associated with the handicap principle, which proposes that such costly extravagance is in fact an adaptation for signal reliability. Most empirical studies of signaling theory have focused on…
“Hyperethnicity” and Ethnic Scenarios in White Noise by Don DeLillo
2021
The present article aims at analyzing the reshaping of the Italian American cultural heritage in Don DeLillo’s White Noise. Drawing on the concept of hyperreality as construed by Jean Baudrillard, the notion of hyperethnicity proves to be an efficient tool for a thorough exam of the transformation of the crucial Italian American topoi — i.e, ethnic signifiers such as the conception of the family, the theme of the household, and the concept of serietà — in the novel White Noise by Don DeLillo. Analyzing the signs of italianità in novels by Don DeLillo, Fred Gardaphé hypothesizes that the writer enacts a “masquerade” of his cultural identity, encoding in this manner ethnic “traces” into his o…
Turning Migration Disadvantage into Educational Advantage. Autobiographies of Successful Students with an Immigrant Background
2018
The article focuses on unexpected pathways of successful students with an immigrant background, in order to investigate the implication of this phenomenon from a theoretical, methodological and empirical point of view. After a review of the main sociological studies on “immigrant optimism” towards educational success, I will reflect on biographical approach, particularly suitable to study this topic. A on-going research project based on the collection of educational autobiographies of successful immigrant-origin students, attending upper secondary schools in Northern Italy, is presented. Then, the story of Destiny, a 16 years-old girl with Moroccan origin, is used as a case study to explore…
Giuseppina Terranova and Other Gruesome Stories: Cases of Female Italian-American murderers in the press from the 1890s to the 1910s
2019
Immigrant women during the period of mass migration received little public attention. However, when some of them became protagonists in sensational murder cases, they burst into the public sphere. Analyzing the representation of Josephine Terranova and other female Italian-American murderers in both the yellow press and the Italian-American press shows how some of these invisible women were able to assert themselves in the public sphere and achieve a degree of agency despite their tragic circumstances. These women, represented as degenerate and genetically inferior in the early coverage of their cases and trials, were, over time, essentially rehabilitated in the press as “proper” American s…
Crossing the Atlantic at the turn of the Millennium: friends and foes
2022
Flipping burgers or flipping pages? Student employment and academic attainment in post-Soviet Latvia
2007
Latvian higher education has undergone a dramatic transition since 1991. This study employs a survey of nearly 1000 social science students studying in 13 different institutions in Latvia to consider the impact of the increase in the number of students who are working while studying. Evidence indicates employment has a strong and significant negative impact on school performance, and the negative impact increases as weekly hours worked increase. This manifests itself through reduced class attendance and reduced time spent in independent study. Finally, we find that the probability of student employment is most significantly affected by the availability of financial aid, gender, ethnicity, a…
The Problem of Terrorism
2017
In the ninetenth century, many migrants ethnicities from central Europe arrived in the United States. This happened for two main reasons: the passage from a medieval to an industrial society, and the pauperization of European peasants who were pressed to migrate to new promising destinations. Within this cohort of migrants, many anarchists exerted a radical violence against capital owners. While they were resisted, often repulsed and exiled from the United States, newly emergent unions pressed nation states for further working enhancements. At the time, the nation state ceded to these unions better conditions of work, which facilitated the rise and expansion of modern tourism: terrorism was…
Root resorption and orthodontic treatment. Review of the literature.
2007
The aim of this paper was to provide a systematic review of the literature on the root resorption caused by orthodontic treatment. Original papers on this subject, published in English from January 2000 until December 2005, were located in the MEDLINE/PubMed database. Other sources were taken from the references of the selected papers. Root resorption is the most common sequela of the orthodontic treatment. It is an inflammatory process that leads to an ischemic necrosis localized in the periodontal ligament when the orthodontic force is applied. The onset and progression of root resorption are associated with risk factors related to the orthodontic treatment such as the duration of treatme…
The migratory phenomenon to the EU in recent decades sho…
