Living on Mount Etna Between Risk, Beauty and Need: A Field Survey on Villages Struck by 2018 Earthquake
2023
Sicily’s uneven geological structure is positioned within a system of tectonic plates. Its (very) active volcano, Mount Etna, has always made it prone to disasters. Nevertheless on the flanks of Etna there are many urbanized areas and the population living on the slopes of Etna has increased a lot in the last century, because there is an ancient and intimate relationship between the land and the people who live and work on the land. In this chapter I will try to investigate possible changes in the perception of the risks associated with the volcano by the resident population by conducting survey in the villages of Fleri, Pisano, Pennisi and Santa Maria la Stella. This study is part of a gro…
The essay, starting from the well-known life cycle of tourist destinations elaborated by Richard Butler in 1980, reflects on the tourist destiny and on the potential of territories still today perceived as dangerous (Iraq, Sri Lanka, Vietnam).

2011
This thesis studies the professional integration in Vietnam of French-speakers in terms of communication. The study context involves French recruiters and Vietnamese candidates in authentic recruitment situations. Introduction presents an overview of the problem: if, as declared by E.T. Hall, culture and communication are the same phenomenon viewed under two particular facets, is it possible for French recruiters and Vietnamese candidates to communicate in order to understand, get along with each other, and reach agreement ? How can communication be viewed in the situation of cultural differences? In fact, cultural codes facilitate communication only when they are shared. The paradox is tha…
Impact of acidic volcanic emissions on ash leaching and on the bioavailability and mobility of trace metals in soils of Mt Etna
2021
We report on original geochemical data, which combine the rainfall trace metal contents from three different areas of Mt. Etna, variably fumigated by the volcanic plume, and those from soils, collected over the whole volcano. Trace element contents in rainfall appear mostly related to acidic ash leaching, while only for the most volatile elements (Cu, Zn, Cd, Pb, As, Sb, Tl, Se) we suggest a derivation from magmatic degassing. We analyzed separately the labile fraction of soil samples, considered the fraction bioavailable to plants and soil organisms living in. The complexing medium used to extract the bioavailable fraction simulates the growth environment of plant roots. The contents of tra…
Storage to Avoid Congestion and Release Solar Power for Vietnam Power System: The Case Studies of a High Voltage Transmission Network in Ninh-Thuan P…
2023
The energy transition is taking place in a diverse manner around the world, and the achievement of clean energy goals could follow very different pathways. However, two recent crises of Covid-19 and Ukraine hit all markets, especially the energy market, thus influencing strongly the energy transition in most countries including Southeast Asian countries. Southeast Asian countries are now playing a prominent role in the supply chain of clean energy sources, with good examples of different renewable energy growths in a very constrained environment of resources. One of these drivers is that the proper Feed-In Tariffs (FIT) mechanism has laid the foundation for the rapid development of renewabl…
Sulphur behaviour in Etnean magmatic system (Italy
2015
Sulfur is an essential volatile component of basaltic magmas and it is mostly dissolved as S6+ and/or S2- depending on the redox conditions. Mt. Etna continuously discharges enormous quantity of SO2 (~3563 t/d [1]). However these high flows are not fully understood in terms of S origin (magmatic or crustal) and of its behavior during magmatic evolution (fractional crystallization, magma mixing, vapor/melt fractionation [2]). Our research combines the study of sulfur in natural olivine hosted melt inclusions with an experimental study on S solubility in hydrous alkali basalts at magmatic conditions. We report new data of S in melt inclusions, belonging to six of the most characteristic Etnea…
