Forecasting Etna eruptions by real-time observation of volcanic gas composition

2007

It is generally accepted, but not experimentally proven, that a quantitative prediction of volcanic eruptions is possible from the evaluation of volcanic gas data. By discussing the results of two years of real-time observation of H2O, CO2, and SO2 in volcanic gases from Mount Etna volcano, we unambiguously demonstrate that increasing CO2/SO2 ratios can allow detection of the pre-eruptive degassing of rising magmas. Quantitative modeling by the use of a saturation model allows us to relate the pre-eruptive increases of the CO2/SO2 ratio to the refilling of Etna's shallow conduits with CO2-rich deep-reservoir magmas, leading to pressurization and triggering of eruption. The advent of real-ti…

Terminal Strombolian activity at Etna's central craters during summer 2012: The most CO2-rich volcanic gas ever recorded at Mount Etna

2016

By using a permanent network of multi-component gas analyzer systems (Multi-GAS), we report for the first time the H2O-CO2-SO2 composition of the volcanic gases emitted prior to, during, and after terminal Strombolian activity at Mount Etna's central craters (CCs). We show that the summer 2012 Strombolian episodes of the Bocca Nuova crater (BNC), the largest of Etna's CCs, are associated with the emission of the most CO2-rich gas measured at the volcano thus far. The BNC plume was particularly CO2-rich with CO2/SO2 up to 100, H2O/CO2 1 prevailed at the BNC and at other degassing vents such as Voragine and Northeast craters during Strombolian eruptions. Based on the results of numerical simu…

The contribution of volcanic emissions (Etna, Stromboli and Vulcano) to the atmospheric trace metals budget in the Mediterranean basin

2010

Volcanic emissions represent one of the major natural source for several trace metals (Cd, Cu, As, Pb, Hg and Zn) into the atmosphere both as gaseous and aerosol forms. The Mediterranean Sea can be considered a large geochemical sink for these elements whose source are the huge amounts of aerosols of different origin. The industrialized areas located in the northern part of the basin represent a nearly constant source of the anthropogenic-dominated aerosol. By contrast, the arid and desert regions located at the southern and eastern parts of the Mediterranean, are the sources of frequent dust “pulses” perturbing the “steady-state” conditions of the local atmosphere through the input of seve…

Opinions on Wine in a New Consumer Country: A Comparative Study of Vietnam and France

2009

Historically, wine was introduced in Vietnam by the French. Further to develop wine consumption in Vietnam, this paper examined the opinions and motivations for wine drinking in a group of Vietnamese consumers and potential consumers. Their concerns were compared with the opinions and motivations expressed by a group of participants from France, considered as a ‘traditional’ consumer country. Our results showed that in Vietnam wine-drinking motivations are characterised by utilitarian and symbolic aspects rather than experiential ones. Certain cultural characteristics of Vietnamese consumers are put forward to explain their motivations.

THE TROPOSPHERIC PROCESSING OF ACIDIC GASES AND HYDROGEN SULPHIDE IN VOLCANIC GAS PLUMES AS INFERRED FROM FIELD AND MODEL INVESTIGATIONS

2007

International audience; Improving the constraints on the atmospheric fate and depletion rates of acidic compounds persistently emitted by non-erupting (quiescent) volcanoes is important for quantitatively predicting the environmental impact of volcanic gas plumes. Here, we present new experimental data coupled with modelling studies to investigate the chemical processing of acidic volcanogenic species during tropospheric dispersion. Diffusive tube samplers were deployed at Mount Etna, a very active open-conduit basaltic volcano in eastern Sicily, and Vulcano Island, a closed-conduit quiescent volcano in the Aeolian Islands (northern Sicily). Sulphur dioxide (SO2), hydrogen sulphide (H2S), h…

Étude climatique de la mousson vietnamienne et applications à la prévision saisonnière

2008

This thesis aims at documenting the physical and dynamic processes associated with the monsoon circulation of Vietnamese regional and synoptic scales, to explore the predictability of its key components and develop statistical and dynamical methods for forecasting the monsoon onset and seasonal. It is divided into two parts. The first part is, in fact, a climate study based on analysis of diagnostic data: - first, the monthly rainfall and temperature data station over the period 1960-2000 are used to analyze the cycle and the variability of these fields on the seven traditional climatic regions of Vietnam using the observed precipitation in various stations. Classifications and correlations…

Melt inclusions constrain S behaviour and redox conditions in Etnean magmas

2016

Mount Etna is a complex magmatic system characterized by a continuous variability both in terms of eruptive style and composition of erupted products. Currently, its volcanic activity is marked by high gas fluxes (of above all SO2), both during eruptive and non-eruptive periods. In this study, we have studied the volatile contents and Fe speciation of olivine-hosted melt inclusions from 6 eruptions of the last 15 ky, mainly to investigate the behaviour of S during ascent and differentiation of Etnean magmas. Samples selected come from the FS eruption which is the oldest and most primitive (picritic composition, Fo91), the Mt Spagnolo and from more recent eruptions: 2002/3, 2006, 2008, and 2…
