The clinical relevance of adiposity when assessing muscle health in men treated with androgen deprivation for prostate cancer
2019
Background: Androgen deprivation therapy (ADT) for prostate cancer (PCa) may prospectively decrease absolute lean mass (LM) and increase absolute fat mass (FM). Given that estimates of LM by dual‐energy X‐ray absorptiometry may be overestimated in obese people, this study examined the influence of adiposity on muscle health in men treated with ADT for PCa. Methods: This cross‐sectional study examined the influence of adiposity on total and appendicular LM (ALM), muscle cross‐sectional (CSA), and muscle strength in 70 men treated with ADT [mean (standard deviation) age, 71 (6) years] for PCa compared with age‐matched PCa (n = 52) and healthy controls (n = 70). Total body LM, FM and ALM, and …
The Clip Approach : A Visual Methodology to Support the (Re)Construction of Life Narratives
2021
Major life changes may cause an autobiographical rupture and a need to work on one’s narrative identity. This article introduces a new qualitative interview methodology originally developed to facilitate 10 prostate cancer patients and five spouses in the (re)creation of their life narratives in the context of a series of interventive interviews conducted over a timespan of several months. In “The Clip Approach” the interviewees’ words, phrases, and metaphors are reflected back in a physical form (“the Clips”) as visual artifacts that allow the interviewees to re-enter and re-consider their experience and life and re-construct their narratives concerning them. Honoring the interviewees as …
Musculoskeletal Responses to Exercise Plus Nutrition in Men with Prostate Cancer on Androgen Deprivation: A 12-Month RCT
2021
PURPOSE Androgen deprivation therapy (ADT) for prostate cancer has multiple adverse effects on musculoskeletal health. This 12-month randomized controlled trial aimed to assess the effects of multicomponent exercise training combined with whey protein, calcium and vitamin D supplementation on bone mineral density (BMD), structure and strength, body composition, muscle strength, and physical function in ADT-treated men. METHODS Seventy ADT-treated men were randomized to exercise plus supplementation (Ex + Suppl; n = 34) or usual care (control; n = 36). Ex + Suppl involved thrice weekly progressive resistance training plus weight-bearing impact exercise with daily multinutrient supplementatio…
Transgene verification and technical improvement in the establisment of transgenic miR-32 mouse line
2015
The main challenge to be faced with prostate cancer (PCa) is the segregation and treatment of patients with life-threatening disease. As current prognostic, diagnostic and therapeutic tools are insufficient, solution is tried to be found from new biomarkers. One of these could be microRNA miR-32, which is possible up-regulated target of androgen receptor in aggressive PCa. Btg2 and Klf2 have further been suggested to be potential down-regulated miR-32 targets. To study hypothesized miR-32 oncogenicity in vivo, transgenic mice over-expressing miR-32 specifically in the prostate are established. Establishment of transgenic mouse line is a prolonged process, in which transgene functionality ne…

Effects of a multicomponent resistance-based exercise program with protein, vitamin D and calcium supplementation on cognition in men with prostate c…
2022
Objectives The aim of this preplanned secondary analysis of a 12-month randomised controlled trial was to investigate the effects of a multicomponent exercise programme combined with daily whey protein, calcium and vitamin D supplementation on cognition in men with prostate cancer treated with androgen deprivation therapy (ADT). Design 12-month, two-arm, randomised controlled trial. Setting University clinical exercise centre. Participants 70 ADT-treated men were randomised to exercise-training plus supplementation (Ex+ Suppl, n=34) or usual care (control, n=36). Intervention Men allocated to Ex + Suppl undertook thrice weekly resistance training with weight-bearing exercise training plus d…
Bone mineral density, structure, distribution and strength in men with prostate cancer treated with androgen deprivation therapy
2019
Androgen deprivation therapy (ADT) improves survival in men with advanced prostate cancer (PCa), but has been associated with compromised skeletal health and increased fracture risk. However, limited previous research has investigated determinants of bone strength beyond DXA-derived areal bone mineral density (aBMD) in this population group. The aim of this cross-sectional study was to investigate the effects of ADT in men with PCa on BMD, bone structure, estimates of whole bone strength and cortical bone distribution. A total of 70 ADT-treated men, 52 PCa controls and 70 healthy controls had DXA lumbar spine and proximal femur aBMD and pQCT distal (4%) and proximal (66%) tibia and radius c…
RapidArc-hoitotekniikka eturauhassyövän sädehoidossa
2012
Eturauhasen sädehoito on perinteisesti tehty konformaalisella 3D-CRT-tekniikalla. RapidArc nostaa matalien annosten tilavuusosuutta terveessä kudoksessa. RapidArc:issa pyritään lyhyeen hoitoaikaan ja säteilytys on päällä koko hoidon ajan. Tutkielmassa analysoitii…
