Hand-Held texting is less distracting than texting with the phone in a holder: anyway, don't do it

2015

We studied the effects of texting while driving and the effects of mobile phone position (hand-held, holder) on drivers' lane-keeping performance, experienced workload, and in-car glance durations in a motion-platform driving simulator with 24 participants. Overall, we found the known negative effects of texting on lane-keeping performance, workload, and visual attention on road, suggesting that texting on the road in any manner is not risk-free. As a novel finding, we found that hand-held texting led to fewer lane-keeping errors and shorter total glance times off road compared to texting with the phone in a holder. We suggest the explanation is that the drivers had considerably more experi…

Non-participation modestly increased with distance to the examination clinic among adults in Finnish health examination surveys

2018

Aims: Health examination surveys (HES) provide important information about population health and health-related factors, but declining participation rates threaten the representativeness of collected data. It is hard to conduct national HESs at examination clinics near to every sampled individual. Thus, it is interesting to look into the possible association between the distance from home to the examination clinic and non-participation, and whether there is a certain distance after which the participation activity decreases considerably. Methods: Data from two national HESs conducted in Finland in 2011 and 2012 were used and a logistic regression model was fitted to investigate how distanc…

The effect of environmental fluctuations on the invasion success of bacterial invader Serratia marcescens

2017

Ilmastonmuutoksen on odotettu lisäävän ympäristöolosuhteissa tapahtuvien vaihteluiden määrää.

Predicting Social Distancing Intention and Behavior During the COVID-19 Pandemic: An Integrated Social Cognition Model.

2020

Abstract Background Social distancing is a key behavior to minimize COVID-19 infections. Identification of potentially modifiable determinants of social distancing behavior may provide essential evidence to inform social distancing behavioral interventions. Purpose The current study applied an integrated social cognition model to identify the determinants of social distancing behavior, and the processes involved, in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic. Methods In a prospective correlational survey study, samples of Australian (N = 365) and U.S. (N = 440) residents completed online self-report measures of social cognition constructs (attitude, subjective norm, moral norm, anticipated regret…

Older adults’ activity destinations before and during COVID-19 restrictions: From a variety of activities to mostly physical exercise close to home

2021

The aim was to study various types of older adult's activity destinations (counts, frequency of visitation, and distance from home) in the pre-COVID-19 era, and to study prospectively how COVID-19-related regulations limiting mobility affected these. Using a map-based questionnaire, 75-85-year-old participants reported activity destinations, that is, any destinations for physical exercise, destinations facilitating one's outdoor mobility, and destinations for other activities, which they had visited several times during the past month. At baseline, a variety of activity destinations was reported, but during COVID-19, destinations reported markedly declined in number, they were reported pred…

Application of the Health Action Process Approach to Social Distancing Behavior During COVID‐19

2020

Author(s): Hamilton, Kyra; Smith, Stephanie R; Keech, Jacob J; Moyers, Susette A; Hagger, Martin S | Abstract: BackgroundThis study examined the social cognition determinants of social distancing behavior during the COVID-19 pandemic in samples from Australia and the US guided by the health action process approach (HAPA).MethodsParticipants (Australia: Nn=n495, 50.1% women; US: Nn=n701, 48.9% women) completed HAPA social cognition constructs at an initial time-point (T1), and one week later (T2) self-reported their social distancing behavior.ResultsSingle-indicator structural equation models that excluded and included past behavior exhibited adequate fit with the data. Isometries of nilpotent metric groups

2016

We consider Lie groups equipped with arbitrary distances. We only assume that the distance is left-invariant and induces the manifold topology. For brevity, we call such object metric Lie groups. Apart from Riemannian Lie groups, distinguished examples are sub-Riemannian Lie groups and, in particular, Carnot groups equipped with Carnot-Carath\'eodory distances. We study the regularity of isometries, i.e., distance-preserving homeomorphisms. Our first result is the analyticity of such maps between metric Lie groups. The second result is that if two metric Lie groups are connected and nilpotent then every isometry between the groups is the composition of a left translation and an isomorphism.…

Distances and proximities of care : Analysing emotio-spatial distances in informal caring

2018

This article analyses how emotio-spatial distances in informal caring are experienced by Finnish women who are employed and simultaneously caring for an ageing relative. The article's research questions are: how do spatial distance and proximity shape informal carers' emotional responses to caring? What kinds of emotion do spatial ‘distance’ or ‘proximity’ evoke in the interview accounts of informal carers? The article draws on theorisations regarding emotional geographies of care. The data consists of two focus group interviews with a total of 12 women who were combining employment with caring. The analysis shows that spatially proximate carers have difficulty detaching from caring, wherea…

Maassa maan tavalla? : eettiset ongelmat ja eettinen kuormittavuus ekspatriaattityössä

2015

Tutkimuksessa on tarkasteltu ekspatriaattien ulkomaankomennuksella kokemia eettisiä ongelmia ja niistä aiheutunutta eettistä kuormittavuutta. Ekspatriaatilla viitataan ulkomaille tietyksi ajanjaksoksi joko itse lähteviä tai organisaation puolelta lähetettäviä työntekijöitä. Eettistä kuormittavuutta on tutkittu aiemmin suomalaisten johtajien keskuudessa (Huhtala ym., 2011), mutta ekspatriaattien kontekstissa aihe on tutkimuskentässä täysin uusi. Tutkimuksen keskeisenä tavoitteena on eettisen kuormittavuuden teoreettinen ja empiirinen tarkastelu. Teoreettista viitekehystä on pohjustettu Jonesin (1991) eettisen päätöksenteon mallilla, Hobfollin (2001) voimavarojen säilyttämisteorialla ja Ronen…
