Multimodal accomplishment of alignment and affiliation in the local space of distant meetings

Technology-mediated (i.e. distant) meetings are complex settings that involve distributed participation frameworks and the coordination of actions in multiple interactional spaces. This paper examines how problems with hearing, speaking, or understanding in the overall meeting space enable the negotiation of alignment and affiliation by co-present participants in the same local meeting space. The collected data reported in this document gives mainly positive feedback on Virtual Toolkit (IO2), highlighting some interesting and relevant elements that can be further developed in its final release. The group of respondents have a quite long average experience in managing inter-institutional projects and belong to the EU-defined main participants groups of Managers (22), Teachers/Trainers/Researchers/Youth workers (17), Technicians (3) and Administrative staff (5). Noticing-prefaced recoveries of the interactional space in a video-mediated business meeting

Drawing on conversation analysis and authentic data from a video-mediated multiparty meeting, this study investigates the sequential and temporal organisation of recoveries of the interactional space. It focuses on moments in which either an auditory or a visual barrier emerges, and the participants orient to these troubles through intensified bodily-visual displays: embodied noticings. The Virtual Toolkit presents a selection of usable virtual tools for project staff within EU projects. The target group of this project being higher education professionals who work in cross-national projects in management, administration, research or technical support, defined the virtual tool selection and their division into categories. Organizational information and communication technologies and their influence on communication visibility and perceived proximity

This study investigates the relationships between the use of various organizational ICTs, communication visibility, and perceived proximity to distant colleagues. In addition, this study examines the interplay between visibility and proximity, to determine whether visibility improves proximity, or vice versa. These relationships are tested in a global company using two waves of panel survey data. ESM use increases communication visibility and perceived proximity, while controlling for prior levels of visibility, proximity, and the use of other organizational ICTs. Millaista etäkokousten vuorovaikutus on, ja miten sitä viedään eteenpäin? Onko väliä, käytetäänkö videoyhteyttä? Millaiset käytänteet ovat hyviä ja toimivia? Tällaisiin kysymyksiin etsin vastauksia englannin kielen väitöskirjassani, jossa tarkastelin mikrotasolla erään kansainvälisen yrityksen teknologiavälitteisiä kokouksia. Vaikka kansainvälisessä ympäristössä työskentelyn kulmakivenä pidetään usein hyvää englannin kielen taitoa, tutkimukseni tulokset osoittavat, ettei se suinkaan ole ainut asia, mitä etäkokouksissa tarvitaan.
