DEVELOPMENT TRENDS OF ACCOUNTING REQUIREMENTS OF SMALL AND MEDIUM ENTERPRISES IN THE REPUBLIC OF LATVIA

2010

The significance of small and medium enterprises (SME) including the development of micro enterprises has been emphasized more and more often in the national economic policy of many countries. This issue is also topical in the economy of Latvia, especially in the situation when it is necessary to revive and stimulate the economic activity in the country. Taking into account the measures planned by the European Commission and the amendments to the legislation of the Republic of Latvia and the planned measures regarding the support of SME as well as the differentiation of requirements in the field of accounting depending on the scale of activities the authors analyse the questions which are c…

Measuring the market power in the ceramic tile industry: An international comparison

2004

This paper measures the degree of competition faced by Spanish and Italian exporters of ceramic tiles in several European Union member states. The results indicate that Spanish producers have a substantial market power while Italian exporters face a high degree of competition. This finding is consistent with the significant gain (loss) in the world production and export shares that Spanish (Italian) producers experienced during the 1990s. The results are also consistent with accounting data. Furthermore, comparisons in the extent of market power across source countries and European destination markets reveal that most variation in the data is related to the source country. JEL no. A Framework for Comparing Financial Sustainability in EU Countries: National Accounts, Governmental Accounting and the Challenge of Harmonization

2019

The information prepared in accordance with the national accounts and public finance statistics criteria plays a decisive role in evaluating and comparing the financial sustainability of governments in the European Union (EU). As national accounts are prepared on the basis of information generated by governmental reporting systems, the elaboration of the information requires adjustments due to the lack of comparability of accounting systems. The chapter contains an analysis of the main differences between the two systems and the adjustments required, as well as their importance for EU countries. It includes a study of the level of correlation between the size of the adjustments and the acco…

Assessing environmental performance in the European Union: Eco-innovation versus catching-up

2017

Abstract This paper assesses environmental performance in the European Union (EU) using Luenberger productivity indicators, directional distance functions and Data Envelopment Analysis techniques. It considers four indicators of the pressures exerted by economic activity on the environment: global warming, tropospheric ozone formation, acidification and particulate formation. The change in environmental performance from the early 2000s onwards is decomposed at the levels of country and environmental pressure, and as the result of eco-innovations and catching-up with the best available environmental technologies; furthermore, we distinguish between the periods of economic growth (2001–07) an…

Life Cycle Assessment of Electricity Generation Scenarios in Italy

2018

Hindering global warming and achieving a more competitive, secure and sustainable energy sector are some of the most relevant goals of the 2030 Framework for climate and energy of the European Union. European countries have to identify and implement strategies for contributing to these ambitious goals. In this context, the authors carried out a scenario analysis on the Sicilian electricity mix in order to estimate the life cycle energy and environmental benefits of the increase of the use of renewable energy technologies for electricity production, and the potential contribution of Sicily in the achievement of the European energy and environmental targets. In detail, the authors identified …

Competitiveness Gap of the European Union Member Countries in the Context of Europe 2020 Strategy

2015

Abstract This paper is addressing issues of the competitiveness gap of the European Union member countries in the context of Europe 2020 strategy's smart growth. Authors are examining current competitiveness situation when economic performance of some countries are significantly better than others and how does it fit in the competitiveness framework set by Europe 2020 strategy. To have a closer look at the smart growth of European Union member countries authors examine R&D expenditures and their impact on patents and high-technology share in exports as one of the indicators of the competitiveness.

Progress in analysis of residual antibacterials in food

2007

Abstract Residual antibacterials in food constitute a risk to human health. Although epidemiological data on the real magnitude of their adverse effects are very scarce, they indicate that food could be an important avenue for evolution and dissemination of antibiotic-resistant bacteria. Analysis of these residues plays a key role in ensuring food safety, to the point that the European Union has not only established maximum residue limits but also requirements concerning the performance of analytical methods and the interpretation of the results. These specifications have had a great influence on protocols and techniques applied. In this review, we discuss the progress of rapid screening me…

Connectedness and connectivity of the Natura 2000 network of protected areas across country borders in the European Union

2012

Abstract We studied the spatial connectedness of Natura 2000 site boundaries and the functional connectivity of the Natura 2000 network across the 34 terrestrial borders of the European Union. Connectivity was measured by the dispersal success of 192 reptile, amphibian, invertebrate and plant species from Annex II of the European Union Habitats Directive, based on the presence of same species on both sides of the borders. Connectedness and connectivity varied greatly between state borders, with good and bad examples found in all parts of the European Union. Connectedness and connectivity were positively correlated. However, a few outlying examples showed that good connectedness is not neces…

Diversity of the selected elements of agricultural potential in the European Union countries

2020

Agricultural importance in determining the directions of respective regions results from its production potential. The agricultural potential of a given country is determined by natural resources, ways of using them, natural conditions, workforce resources, technical resources and basic economic conditions. In this paper, only income and rural population are taken under consideration to describe the agricultural potential. Currently, European Union countries are functioning under the assumptions of the Common Agricultural Policy, assuming, among other things, increasing agricultural productivity, ensuring an adequate standard of living for the rural population and stabilising markets. The E…

Global versus cultural approaches in public relationship management

2007

PurposeThe aim of this paper is to present and compare two approaches (the global and the cultural) to public relationship management and to argue by reference to different cases, why the cultural approach can be considered more effective in establishing good relationships in different national cultural contexts.Design/methodology/approachThe discussion identifies some of the limitations of recent thinking regarding the nature of a global public and the possibility to define and treat international publics as a global public in public relationship management. As validation of this claim, cases in the European context are presented to show that a cultural approach provides better interpretat…
