The impact of frailty on ICU and 30-day mortality and the level of care in very elderly patients (≥ 80 years)
2017
Purpose: Very old critical ill patients are a rapid expanding group in the ICU. Indications for admission, triage criteria and level of care are frequently discussed for such patients. However, most relevant outcome studies in this group frequently find an increased mortality and a reduced quality of life in survivors. The main objective was to study the impact of frailty compared with other variables with regards to short-term outcome in the very old ICU population. Methods: A transnational prospective cohort study from October 2016 to May 2017 with 30 days follow-up was set up by the European Society of Intensive Care Medicine. In total 311 ICUs from 21 European countries participated. Th…
Anesthesia protocols in laboratory animals used for scientific purposes
2018
Background: A suitable, effective and free of complications anesthetic protocol is very important in experimental studies on animal models since it could bias the outcome of a trial. To date there is no universally accepted protocol for induction, maintenance and recovery from anesthesia. The endotracheal intubation with the use of inhalation anesthesia is used very especially in the from of large size laboratory animals, because it is a secure and easy control mode. However, it is not common for small laboratory animals because of the high technical skills required. Aim: The aim of this paper is a review of the main methods of induction of anesthesia in laboratory animals. Materials and me…
Distinction Between Euthanasia and Valid Medical Decision and Its Impact on Unborn Life
2014
The article is dedicated to revealing those aspects which allow to distinguish euthanasia from valid medical decisions which are made by physicians within the scope of the care of incurably ill persons and their impact on the issue regarding yet unborn life. As in separate forms of euthanasia and the realisation of its kinds, analogies of valid medical procedure are observed, the article analyses the most common cases when the decision made by the physician and the resultant action or omission of the action binds him/her to unjustified criminal judgement by revealing the fundamental features which approve the legitimacy of the decision made, thus distinguishing it from the criminal offence,…
Il caso Mortier c. Belgique. L’eutanasia conseguente a sofferenze psichiche
2023
2013
In this article, I will offer a definition of active euthanasia, of passive euthanasia and of physician-assisted suicide. Secondly, because I believe in the value of individual autonomy, I will confutate some arguments adduced against the legalization of voluntary euthanasia and physician-assisted suicide. In particular, five arguments. The slippery slope argument, the perfectionist moral argument, the theological argument, the patients’ vulnerability argument, the life’s sacred value argument.
Le poche luci e le molte ombre dei disegni di legge italiani in tema di morte medicalmente assistita
2022
The research analyzes the recent Italian draft laws on Medical Assistance in dying, their strengths and several shortcomings, comparing them with other European laws on this subject. The Italian draft laws are not fully hinged on the exercise of self-de- termination of the suffering person but remain bound to the reference to a condition of proximity to death or the presence of life-sustaining treatments, which in fact cause unjustified inequities in access to a health service aimed at protecting the dignity of the person. Furthermore, the articulation of the procedures for requesting and assessing suitability outlined in the Italian bills does not allow to fully protect the person in a con…
Le sollecitazioni delle Corti e l’inerzia del legislatore in tema di suicidio assistito. Un confronto tra Italia e Inghilterra
2019
Starting from the analysis of the decision of the Italian Constitutional Court on the Cappato case, the essay is the occasion for a joint reflection between Italian constitutional law and comparative law on the subject of assisted suicide and euthanasia, which seems to determine the inertia of the legislators in the face of activism of the Courts, perpetually seeking a dialogue with the first. To suffer the most serious damage of these attitudes are the sick, who in this matter more than ever need certainty to the law.
Considerazioni sparse, in chiave comparatistica, sulle proposte di legge in materia di eutanasia e di suicidio medicalmente assistito
2019
The essay deals with proposed legislations, in Italy and in England, about euthanasia and assistance in dying. It aims to confront the different solutions in both legal systems, for the purpose of finding the best result for the respect of the dignity of people suffering for terminal illness.
Wybrane problemy bioetyczne w rozumieniu Kościołów pentekostalnych i Kościoła katolickiego. Studium teologiczno-porównawcze
2018
Anesthesia for Euthanasia Influences mRNA Expression in Healthy Mice and after Traumatic Brain Injury
2014
Tissue sampling for gene expression analysis is usually performed under general anesthesia. Anesthetics are known to modulate hemodynamics, receptor-mediated signaling cascades, and outcome parameters. The present study determined the influence of anesthetic paradigms typically used for euthanization and tissue sampling on cerebral mRNA expression in mice. Naïve mice and animals with acute traumatic brain injury induced by controlled cortical impact (CCI) were randomized to the following euthanasia protocols (n=10-11/group): no anesthesia (NA), 1 min of 4 vol% isoflurane in room air (ISO), 3 min of a combination of 5 mg/kg midazolam, 0.05 mg/kg fentanyl, and 0.5 mg/kg medetomidine intraperi…
