Opportunity costs and efficiency of investments in mega sport events
2009
Economic analyses of mega sport events usually focus on the positive effects and legacies while ignoring opportunity costs and the efficiency of using scarce resources. Event opponents argue that decisions to invest public resources should also consider alternative uses of the money. This paper aims to clarify some of the issues surrounding the opportunity costs of mega sport events. By using the measure ‘efficiency’ (output/input) of alternative investments it will become clear that the decision to stage a mega sport event cannot be taken in isolation and that there are many factors that need to be considered. The argument put forward is based on a stakeholder’s perspective and a spatial d…
A multicriterion design of steel frames with shakedown constraints
2006
The minimum volume design of elastic perfectly plastic steel frames subjected to fixed and cyclic loads is searched in such a way that the structure remains in elastic field in serviceability conditions, while it is subjected to alternating plasticity under very strong cyclic actions, incremental and instantaneous collapse being prevented. The problem is faced on the grounds of a statical and a kinematical approach. The Kuhn-Tucker conditions of the two problems prove that they are each one the dual of the other and provide useful pieces of information about the structural behaviour. Numerical applications confirm the theoretical expectations: optimal designs turn out to be quite light, wit…
Prevention of medication related osteonecrosis of the jaw after dentoalveolar surgery : an institution's experience
2020
Background Dentoalveolar surgery is a predisposing factor for medication related osteonecrosis of the jaw (MRONJ). The aim of our study was to evaluate the described surgical procedures to prevent the development of MRONJ after dentoalveolar surgery in patients receiving bisphosphonates. Material and methods In this retrospective study, sixty-three dentoalveolar surgeries were performed on 44 patients taking bisphosphonate in accordance with the treatment procedures we described. The following procedures were applied to patients 1) use of antibiotics 2) performed dentoalveolar surgical procedures 3) fill the socket with leukocyte- and platelet-rich fibrin (L-PRF) 4) post-operative applicati…
Secondary Stroke Prevention in Polish Adults: Results from the LIPIDOGRAM2015 Study
2021
Background: The purpose of the study was to evaluate secondary stroke prevention in Poland and its association with sociodemographic factors, place of residence, and concomitant cardiovascular risk factors. Material and methods: From all patients in LIPIDOGRAM2015 Study (n = 13,724), 268 subjects had a history of ischaemic stroke and were included. Results: 165 subjects (61.6%) used at least one preventive medication. Oral antiplatelet and anticoagulation agents were used by 116 (43.3%) and 70 (26.1%) patients, respectively. Only 157 (58.6%) participants used lipid-lowering drugs, and 205 (76.5%) were treated with antihypertensive drugs. Coronary heart disease (CHD) and dyslipidaemia were a…
Erosive effect of industrialized fruit juices exposure in enamel and dentine substrates: An in vitro study
2021
Background Erosive tooth wear has been a highly prevalent and emerging phenomenon related to eating habits of the population. Aim: This study sought to investigate industrialized fruit juices exposure in enamel and dentine substrates in terms of erosive effect. Material and methods Human enamel and dentine specimens were randomized into 8 groups (n=8): Grape juice - Ades®, Grape juice - Del Valle Kapo®, Grape juice - Aurora®, Orange juice - Del Valle Kapo®, Orange juice - Ades®, Strawberry juice - Mais Vita®, Strawberry juice - Ades®, Citrus fruit juice - Tampico®. Specimens were submitted to an in vitro erosive challenge and to a microhardness test to evaluate the percentage of surface mic…
The taint of torture and the brazilian legal system
2019
In Brazil, the practice of torture intertwines deeply with its own history. The literature on the subject has had a greater intensification on its registers during the Dictatorial Regime (1964 to 1985). In spite of the Brazilian Constitution of 1988, Brazil only makes efforts to investigate the crimes of torture of this period to comply with the provisions of the United Nations in 2011. Within this scenario, the NationalTruth Commission (Law 12.528, of November 2011) was created with the purpose of clarifying the facts and circumstances of cases concerning human rights violations, as well as the Law on Access to Information (Law 12.527 of November 2011), which have regulated the constitutio…
The more the ‘Merrier’: A multi-sourced model of addiction
2012
Very few contemporary approaches on addiction specifically aim to address the question of why people who are well-aware of harmful consequences continue to perform addictive behaviours. The aim of this article is to introduce a model of addiction which addresses this question. This model integrates the existing theoretical approaches on addiction in one framework by arguing that the majority of contemporary accounts of addiction are not mutually exclusive in the sense that the occurrence or prominence of one process does not preclude the occurrence of another. Moreover, the suggestion is that the majority of these accounts are in effect supportive of and cooperate with each other in order t…
A model of high performance work practices and turnover intentions
2007
– This paper aims to clarify the relationship between human resource practices and staff retention by selecting three high performance work practices (precursors) and one outcome variable (turnover intentions), and trying to demonstrate the mediator role of employee commitment and job satisfaction in this relationship., – The proposed model has been analyzed with a sample of 198 employees and a structural equation modeling methodology., – Salary strategies and job enrichment strategies were positively related to job satisfaction. Job enrichment strategies and job stability strategies were positively related to employee commitment. Employee commitment was negatively related to turnover inten…
