A physical activity program dedicated to adolescents

2014

Adolescence is a life stage in which the development of individuality and self-identity occurs. The recent study of the SIP evaluated the life style in adolescents, highlighting the low participation to continuative sports programs and the high incidence to sports drop out, interesting more than 30% of adolescents. These problems are partially linked to low compliance of adolescents to coaches training, partially to the request of a sport close to adolescents requirements. However sports participation is beneficial for physical and psychological development of adolescents. Sports programs promote responsible social behaviours and greater academic success, confidence in personal physical abi…

Public responses to intimate partner violence against women: the influence of perceived severity and personal responsibility.

2009

This paper explored public willingness to act when exposed to cases of intimate partner violence against women, by analyzing the influence of perceived severity and personal responsibility on two types of responses: mediating and reporting to the police. Results (N = 419) yielded main effects of personal responsibility for both types of responses. No main effects of perceived severity were found. A significant interaction between perceived severity and personal responsibility was found only for reporting responses. Results are discussed in light of the helping behavior research tradition. Implications for public education and advocacy programs are also considered. Marisol.lila@uv.es; Enriqu…

Eventually periodic solutions of single neuron model

2020

In this paper, we consider a nonautonomous piecewise linear difference equation that describes a discrete version of a single neuron model with a periodic (period two and period three) internal decay rate. We investigated the periodic behavior of solutions relative to the periodic internal decay rate in our previous papers. Our goal is to prove that this model contains a large quantity of initial conditions that generate eventually periodic solutions. We will show that only periodic solutions and eventually periodic solutions exist in several cases.

Socio-behavioral factors, oral hygiene level and periodontitis prevalence in a 35-44-year-old Greek adult population: A cross-sectional survey

2021

Background Sub-optimal oral hygiene is considered as a primary risk factor for periodontitis occurrence. Various socio-behavioral determinants may contribute either independently or by influencing adversely the oral hygiene (OH) level. The aim of the present study was to examine the periodontal status of 35-44-year-old Greek adults and determine the contribution of risk indicators, including the socio-behavioral aspects and the population's oral hygiene level, on disease prevalence. Material and methods In 1218 participants, Community Periodontal Index (CPI), Loss of Attachment (LoA) and simplified Oral Hygiene Index (OHI-S) were calculated. Multivariable regression models examined the effe…

How important is culture to understand political protest?

2021

Abstract The literature considers nonviolent protests among the most important predictors of transitions towards democracy and democratic reforms. This study addresses the conditionsmaking countries more likely to experience nonviolent instead of violent forms of protest. While the literature emphasizes economic and political predictors of protest at the country level, we expand the study of nonviolent-vs-violent protest by incorporating cultural predictors. To do so, we use a newly developed time-pooled cross-sectional database covering an established set of orientations from the World Values Survey, known as “emancipative values”. Estimating the prevalence of these values at the country l…

Common and separable behavioral and neural mechanisms underlie the generalization of fear and disgust

2021

Generalization represents the transfer of a conditioned responses to stimuli that resemble the conditioned stimulus (CS). Previous studies on generalization of defensive avoidance responses have primarily focused on fear and have neglected disgust generalization, which represents a key pathological mechanism in some anxiety disorders. In the present study we examined common and distinct mechanisms of fear and disgust generalization by means of a fear or disgust multi-CS conditioning and generalization paradigm with concomitant event-related potential (ERPs) acquisition in n = 62 subjects. We demonstrate that compared to fear, disgust-relevant generalized stimuli (GS) elicited larger expecta…

An integrated genome research network for studying the genetics of alcohol addiction

2010

Alcohol drinking is highly prevalent in many cultures and contributes to the global burden of disease. In fact, it was shown that alcohol constitutes 3.2% of all worldwide deaths in the year 2006 and is linked to more than 60 diseases, including cancers, cardiovascular diseases, liver cirrhosis, neuropsychiatric disorders, injuries and foetal alcohol syndrome. Alcoholism, which has been proven to have a high genetic load, is one potentially fatal consequence of chronic heavy alcohol consumption, and may be regarded as one of the most prevalent neuropsychiatric diseases afflicting our society today. The aim of the integrated genome research network 'Genetics of Alcohol Addiction'-which is a …

Statins and new-onset diabetes

2013

Statins are highly efficacious lipid modifying agents that reduce the risk for cardiovascular (CV) events in both primary and secondary prevention settings. However, statins affect molecular mechanisms which adversely impact on insulin sensitivity and β-cell function, thereby increasing risk for new onset diabetes mellitus (NOD). Defining the mechanisms involved is the focus of considerable current investigation. The statins reduce the risk for CV events in normoglycemic patients as well as in those with diabetes mellitus (DM) and their benefits outweigh the risk of inducing NOD. We review the clinical evidence for NOD with statin treatment, as well as the potential mechanisms involved. Our…
