Anti-angiogenic therapies in prostate cancer.
2012
Prostate cancer (PCa) is the second most common type of cancer among men in Western societies. Once in the castrate-resistant metastatic setting therapeutic options are limited. The importance of angiogenesis in the progression of PCa has been widely reported providing a rationale to test anti-angiogenic compounds for PCa treatment in clinical trials (CTs). However, in spite of the promising results shown in preclinical models and some anti-tumor activity observed in CTs, to date, no angiogenic inhibitor has been approved for use in PCa. This editorial outlines the latest clinical evidence regarding anti-angiogenic therapies in PCa treatment.

Traditional use of medicinal agents: a valid source of evidence
2013
Traditional knowledge uncovered by serious historical research may help to identify new therapeutic agents. It also plays a part in safety evaluation and drug regulation. So far, however, this way of gaining knowledge is very much neglected in the concept of evidence based medicine, which is in no way contradictory to traditional use. Thus, the true meaning of the word 'tradition' is described, while reliable historical sources are quoted. It is then shown how research into the traditional use of medicinal plants is able to reveal knowledge about efficacy and safety of natural products. Several examples successfully leading to new therapeutic options are given. It is then referred to the co…
Sobre verdad, mentira y posverdad. Elementos para una filosofía de la información
2020

Host manipulation revisited: no evidence for a causal link between altered photophobia and increased trophic transmission of amphipods infected with …
2012
Summary 1.Many parasites with complex life cycles critically rely on trophic transmission to pass from an intermediate host to a final host. Parasite-induced behavioural alterations in intermediate hosts are often supposed to be adaptive through increasing the susceptibility of intermediate hosts to predation by final hosts. However, the evidence is so far only correlational, and direct evidence for a causal link between one single behavioural alteration and increased trophic transmission is still missing. 2.Here, we addressed, for the first time, the relationship between increased vulnerability to fish predation and altered photophobia in an amphipod, Gammarus pulex, infected with a fish a…
Bank-firm credit network in Japan. An analysis of a bipartite network
2015
We present an analysis of the credit market of Japan. The analysis is performed by investigating the bipartite network of banks and firms which is obtained by setting a link between a bank and a firm when a credit relationship is present in a given time window. In our investigation we focus on a community detection algorithm which is identifying communities composed by both banks and firms. We show that the clusters obtained by directly working on the bipartite network carry information about the networked nature of the Japanese credit market. Our analysis is performed for each calendar year during the time period from 1980 to 2011. Specifically, we obtain communities of banks and networks …
Observational Cosmology at High Redshift
2007
Summary. I offer a brief review of the evolution and present status of our observational knowledge of the high-redshift Universe. In particular, I focus on the different methods that have been devised to select distant objects, and the observational evidence in hand to support (or else) the standard evolutionary scenario. 1 How High is High? The study of objects at cosmological distances from us started in the 1960s with the discovery and identification of quasi-stellar radiosources. The explanation of the features observed in the optical spectra of these objects as highly redshifted hydrogen lines opened the door to the very distant Universe. For the next 30 years after the discovery of qu…
A search for diffuse absorption bands in carbon-rich stars -- I. Barium and related stars
2003
The results of a search for interstellar and circumstellar absorption lines in high-resolution optical spectra of seven late-type stars are presented. All these stars are single-lined spectroscopic binaries with unseen companions, presumably white dwarfs. Some residual material indicative of recent mass transfer from an asymptotic giant branch (AGB) star might still be associated with the systems. Peculiar energy distribution and the sodium D 1 and D 2 lines give direct evidence about the material in the line of sight in some cases. Absorption features of simple carbon-bearing molecules (C 2 , CN) have been detected in most of the examined stars, confirming a carbon-rich nature of the corre…
