A non-valvular infective endocarditis in an HIV patient with myocardiopathy

2006

A 37-year-old woman presented in the emergency department revealing a history of HIV infection and C virus hepatitis diagnosed 15 years ago, acquired after a period of intravenous drug abusing. The patient was receiving triple antiHIV therapy and was in an A1 stage (last lymphocite recount of CD4: 0.63 10/l and no AIDS disease manifestation to the present moment). She described episodes, starting 20 days before, of torathic pain coexisting with shivers. There were no symptoms or signs of any focal infection. In the physical examination the only findings were a temperature of 38.4 8C, a 4 cm hepatomegaly and lipodystrophy. We found in the electrocardiogram a sinus rhythm, 96 bpm and no ST se…

Atmospheric pressure plasma polymerisation of metalloporphyrins containing mesoporous membranes for gas sensing applications

2013

Abstract Metalloporphyrins are embedded in an organosilicon matrix by an easily up-scalable atmospheric pressure dielectric barrier discharge method. The integrity of the metalloporphyrins, followed by UV–visible spectroscopy, is successfully preserved and their aggregation prevented. The single molecule properties, rather than the bulk ones, are thus enhanced. Exposure to triethylamine, which reaches the metalloporphyrins through the pores of the organosilicon membrane, led to a shift in the absorption spectrum and confirms the gas sensing potential of such coatings.

Volatile Markets and Reluctant Entrepreneurs?

2011

Winston (1999) asks how well experience with the microeconomic theory of firms and commercial markets helps in understanding the economics of higher education. “That experience and those insights will be used by trustees, politicians, administrators, lawyers, reporters and the public, as well as by economists, to understand and evaluate the behavior of colleges and universities” (Winston, 1999, p. 13). What is interesting is who is not mentioned: faculty and students. This is because Winston’s purpose is to problematize the economic analogies of student and customer, as well as faculty markets and labor markets. Winton’s purpose is now very relevant in Finland. As of 1 January 2010, the Fin…

Hairy black-holes in shift-symmetric theories

2020

Scalar hair of black holes in theories with a shift symmetry are constrained by the no-hair theorem of Hui and Nicolis, assuming spherical symmetry, time-independence of the scalar field and asymptotic flatness. The most studied counterexample is a linear coupling of the scalar with the Gauss-Bonnet invariant. However, in this case the norm of the shift-symmetry current $J^2$ diverges at the horizon casting doubts on whether the solution is physically sound. We show that this is not an issue since $J^2$ is not a scalar quantity, since $J^\mu$ is not a diff-invariant current in the presence of Gauss-Bonnet. The same theory can be written in Horndeski form with a non-analytic function $G_5 \s…

Bartomeu de Tresbens, metge i astròleg de Pere el Cerimomiós : aproximació biogràfica i diplomatari

2019

Bone marrow biopsy in Hodgkin's lymphoma.

2004

In the study of patients with Hodgkin's lymphoma (HL) the evaluation of bone marrow biopsy (BMB) can be difficult. In this review we analyze the main diagnostic features and the clinical risk factors of BM involvement. Although the role of BMB is criticized by some authors, its value is irreplaceable in the staging of HL and in the diagnosis of primary medullary HL. The Ann Arbor staging committee criteria should be revised and updated in the light of the current immunohistochemical studies that give a fundamental help in the diagnostic process. A single BMB should be adequate for diagnosis in most instances. In cases of suspicious involvement a controlateral BMB could be performed.

MUC1-CT mediates corticosteroid responses in COPD

2016

Background: Corticosteroid resistance is an acquired condition in chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) patients and a challenge to develop new anti-inflammatory therapies. In previous reports we showed that cytoplasmic tail of the membrain tethered mucin 1 (MUC1-CT) interacts with glucocorticoid receptor (GR) mediating corticosteroid anti-inflammatory efficacy. Objectives: To analyze the role of MUC1-CT as a key marker of corticosteroid efficacy in COPD Methods: The expression of MUC1-CT and the anti-inflammatory role of dexamethasone were evaluated in neutrophils and bronchial epithelial cells from healthy and COPD patients. Anti-inflammatory effects of dexamethasone and glucocorti…

Erythema multiforme induced by alendronate sodium in a geriatric patient: A case report and review of the literature

2017

Erythema multiforme is an uncommon acute inflammatory disorder caused by exposure to microbes or drugs. Erythema multiforme minor typically affects only one mucosa and can be associated with symmetrical target skin lesions on the extremities. The disease usually occurs in patients in their 3rd and 4th decade of life, but can also affect children and adolescents. Alendronate sodium has been approved for the prevention and treatment of osteoporosis in postmenopausal women, but is associated with adverse events. This study reports and discusses a case of erythema multiforme minor. In addition, a literature search of articles published in PubMed-Medline was performed. The case was a 96-year-old…

Kohlschütter-Tönz Syndrome: report of an additional case

2013

Kohlschütter-Tönz Syndrome is a rare disorder clinically characterized by amelogenesis imperfecta, epilepsy and progressive mental deterioration. We present an additional case of this syndrome of a nine year-old boy who was referred by pigmented teeth. The mental deterioration was associated with speech delay, impulsive behavior, attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder, and learning problems. The physical examination revealed a reduction of lower third, slightly palpebral fissures, low ear and hair implantation, coarse hair and hypertrichosis. The intraoral examination showed alteration in teeth pigmentation diagnosed as amelogenesis imperfecta. Although rare, the present case report illus…
